EMV® QR Marks Best Practice Use Case Guide
This document is intended for any stakeholder using the EMV® QR Payment Mark and EMV QR Scan Icon. Best practice use cases are detailed to demonstrate how each of the marks should best be used in both consumer-presented and merchant-presented scenarios.

EMV QR Code Specifications
EMVCo has released two QR Code payment specifications that support merchant-presented QR Code and consumer-presented QR Code use cases. The documents define QR Code payments in a manner that simplifies the development and potentially broadens the acceptance of QR Code payment solutions globally. QR Codes are two-dimensional machine-readable barcodes, which are increasingly used to facilitate mobile payments at the point-of-sale. The EMV® QR Code Specification for payment systems supports two differing QR Code payment use cases.
EMV®, the EMVCo Logo, the Globe Logo, the QR Payment Mark and the QR Scan Icon are trademarks or registered trademarks in the U.S. and other countries. The EMV mark, the EMVCo Logo, the Globe Logo, the QR Payment Mark and the QR Scan Icon are owned by EMVCo, LLC.

Consumer-presented – the consumer displays the
QR Code on their mobile device and the merchant uses an optical scanner to read the code.
Merchant-presented – the merchant displays the
QR Code and the consumer uses their mobile device to scan the code.

To promote global interoperability awareness across EMV QR Code payments, EMVCo has created the EMV QR Payment Mark and EMV QR Scan Icon for consistency – collectively referred to as the QR Marks. EMVCo has developed Reproduction Requirements and a royalty-free trademark license agreement to enable all implementers of EMV QR Code solutions to use the respective QR Marks.
EMVCo QR Marks
QR Payment Mark
The EMV QR Payment Mark may be used to inform consumers that a merchant accepts EMV QR Code payment solutions. Supplemental messaging to consumers will confirm whether merchant-presented transactions, consumer-presented transactions, or both, are supported. The QR Payment Mark may also be used for in-app purchases on a mobile device to click and generate a consumer-presented QR Code.
QR Scan Icon
The EMV QR Scan Icon may be used for in-app purchases on mobile devices, to indicate that the consumer may scan a merchant-presented EMV QR Code. The EMV QR Scan Icon may not be used as an acceptance mark at a point-of-sale for consumer-presented or merchant-presented transactions.

With the increasing deployment of QR Code payment methods, it is important that the payment ecosystem provides a consistent experience for consumers globally. The QR Marks can be used on consumer mobile devices to indicate whether a device supports consumer-presented, merchant-presented or both consumer and merchant-presented transactions. The following table demonstrates best practice use cases for using the QR Marks on consumer devices.

By accurately and consistently using the QR Payment Mark on terminal and storefront branding, merchants can simply demonstrate to consumers that consumer-presented, merchant-presented or both consumer and merchant-presented EMV QR Code payments are accepted. Conversely, the EMV QR Scan Icon is not intended for use by merchants.
