IRON ORREmu Plains triathlete Ben Orr has added another piece of silverware to his trophy cabinet by taking out first place in the 25-29 yrs age group at the Port Macquarie Ironman last month. A more notable achievement is that he was the first placed amateur athlete, beat ing a host o f profess ional triathletes from around the world.

SKATING TO OZIf dedication and motivation are anything to go by Emu Heights ice skater, Emily Imber, will be skating her way to the top of her sport.

The athletic 10 year old only took up ice skating 2 years ago when a friend kept nagging her to go to the ice skating rink in Penrith. Since then, skating is all Emily can think about.

Emily has participated in a number of artistic skating competitions and has tasted success in several of these. Most recently, Emily won the Penrith Artistic Ice Skating title, where she performed a routine dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Emily really likes the artistic competitions as they arenʼt as technical as the figure skating routines and skaters get to dress up in character for their routine.

Emilyʼs goal is to compete at the National titles in 2012 .

TEAM OF THE MONTHFROM THE EDITOREmu Plains, Emu Heights, Leonay, a clearly defined community between the Nepean River and the incline to the Blue Mountains, has long enjoyed a rich history of participation and success in sport at both a club and individual level.

The Emu Leonay Sports Buzz will provide a range of sports coverage of the local area and celebrate the achievements and participation of individuals, teams and clubs, as well as acknowledge the efforts of local individuals and officials who make so many sporting opportunities possible for our children and elite athletes. The focus of the Emu Leonay Sports Buzz will be on the success of individuals and teams, together with participation in sport and recreational pursuits at any level, in the aim of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

We will provide recognition with our monthly features such as Team of the Month which will acknowledge a local sports team at any level. Sports Star of the Month shares stories of local athletes who have achieved above and beyond. It is surprising how many stars we have living amongst us! Local sport thrives on volunteers to give up their time to assist with the running of junior clubs and our L o c a l L e g e n d o f t h e M o n t h acknowledges these people within our community.

SPORTS STAR OF THE MONTH

Emu Plains triathlete Ben Orr has added another piece of silverware to his trophy cabinet taking out first place in the 25-29 years age group at the Port Macquarie Ironman last month. Ben was the first placed amateur athlete, beating a host of professional triathletes from around the world.

Finishing in a time of 9 hours, 7 minutes, Ben completed each of the three legs in a remarkable time; 3.8km swim in 54:24, 180km cycle in 5:06:34 and the marathon (42km) run in 3:01:44.

Ben is no stranger to success in this sport, having twice competed at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, finishing second in the 18-24 years age group in 2008.

This yearʼs result was good enough for Ben to qualify for the Hawaiian Ironman held in October, however he has opted to take a well earned 3 month break and set his sights on Hawaii in 2012.

A locksmith by trade, Ben has had to make a lot of sacrifices to achieve this success. He took 3 weeks leave from work in the lead up to the Port Macquarie I ronman. Under the guidance of Trent Chapman, Head Coach of the Penrith Institute of Sport (PIS), Ben would train for 7 to 8 hours every Saturday and Sunday. This would include 200km bike rides on most weekends. In an average training week it would not be uncommon for Ben to swim a total of 15-20km in the pool , cyc le anywhere between 400-700km and run over 120km, most of which was started 3 or 4 hours before most people consider getting out of bed in the morning.

Diet has played a huge role in Benʼs success at this level. He has had to adhere to a stringent diet with measured portions of food whilst in training. “Maintaining optimum weight is so important as it is believed that every excess kilogram adds an estimated 5 -10 minutes to the overall time of an Ironman event”, Ben says.

Asked what he enjoys the most about not having to train the ridiculously long hours, Ben says, “I am able to relax my diet a bit and really enjoy eating chocolate chip ice cream and potato chips”.

Benʼs success at Port Macquarie this year was made even sweeter, beating home friend, and fellow PIS member, Leigh Chapman. Leigh, a well known local who has achieved so much success in the sport, had Ben covered in the swim and cycle legs of the Ironman. But with the run leg being Benʼs strongest of the three disciplines, Ben ground out a physically and mentally tough run to pass Leigh with only 4km to go.

I t i s w ide ly acknowledged that endurance athletes in sports like triathlon donʼt peak until they are older, which means that the 27 year old probably has his most successful years ahead of him. Considering what he has achieved as an amateur, combining a regular job with training, Ben could certainly mix it with the elite if training was his sole focus. However, Benʼs mild manner and humbling modesty would never see him admit to this.

Martin ʻMartyʼ Romer has been involved in Emu Plains sport as a player, coach and committee member for over 20 years and whilst impressive, it isnʼt just his achievements as a player that earn him status as a local legend.

Marty has helped develop the skills of hundreds of local juniors in cricket and rugby league, volunteering his time to support local sport where needed from Milo Have-A-Go cricket to coaching several teams a year in both codes.

During the summer months, itʼs not uncommon to find him at Leonay Oval helping out with Litt le Athletics, preparing the tracks, mowing and line marking the lanes, cooking the BBQ or assuming the role of official starter for the kidʼs races.Itʼs a huge commitment in terms of time and effort but itʼs something Marty does with such energy and enjoyment, making junior sport a fun experience for the people of our community.

The first sporting involvement Marty had in this area came when he joined Emu Plains Cricket Club in 1990/91 as a 2nd Grade all-rounder. The following year Marty played his way into the 1st Grade team and has remained there since, having now captained the team for over 10 seasons. Marty is one of the clubs most capped players playing over 250 games, scoring 4717 runs and taking 416 wickets. Well known throughout the Nepean District Cricket Association for his ability to make things happen with both the bat and ball, Marty strikes fear into opposing batsmen and bowlers with h is never say d ie a t t i tude and competitive spirit. In the season just gone, Marty won the Nepean District 1st grade bowling average at the ripe age of 42, taking 26 wickets at an average of 7.77 runs per wicket.

Martyʼs sporting talents were not only restricted to cricket. He also captained the Emu Plains A Grade Rugby League team earning himself a reputation as a no nonsense ball playing forward. His knowledge and skills in the game have seen him become a successful coach of several junior teams, earning him Junior Coach of the Year in 2009.

Legend! It is a label given to many Australians especially when referring to oneʼs sporting ability. It can often be loosely given to a person just for being a good bloke. Well, regardless of your criteria for a person deserving of legend status, Martin Romer certainly meets and surpasses all criteria to make him an Emu Leonay Local Legend.

Ella Wallace has been consistently destroying opposition defence scoring 15 tries in 6 games, the highlight being 6 tries in a single game. While Ella started playing mid way through last season, she has been joined by her twin sister Kate Wallace who has already notched up 5 tries this season. Kate has been described by Trainer Grant Townes as being, “one of the best little defenders in the team”. “She has so much energy and loves tackling any player with the ball regardless of their size”.

Rugby league is an unlikely sport of choice for most young girls but they have had plenty of experience with older brother Tom Wallace, who plays in the U/11s Div 1, providing them with regular tackling practice from an early age.

It is a great advertisement for rugby league in an age where so much debate takes place over the size of players in the Penrith Junior League and whether there is a need for weight-for-age competitions. Both Ella and Kate are by no means big in comparison to the size of their opposition but they are certainly big on effort and ability.

Emu Plains Hockey Club is celebrating their 40th year as a foundation member o f t he Pen r i t h /Nepean Hockey Association. A 40th Anniversary Dinner is being held at Emu Sports Club to mark the special occasion with all past and present players invited to come along and reminisce and celebrate the clubʼs proud history. The dinner is being held on Saturday 11th June for $40 per head.

A series of ʻfriendlyʼ matches against Macquarie University on the Sunday following the Anniversary Dinner have also been organised to celebrate this special year for the club.

One of the highlights of this anniversary is that EPHCʼs longest serving player, Stuart Parnell, played in the clubʼs first season in 1972 and has played every s e a s o n s i n c e . T h i s i s a h u g e accomplishment and a record that will be very hard to beat.

The 2011 season is proving successful for EPHC. At the mid-point of the season, all Junior & Senior teams are travelling well, with all still in contention for a finals berth. The 2nd Grade Ladies are still undefeated with only the one

goal scored against them so far. After the stellar success of four senior premierships in 2010 the club has certainly set high expectations for 2011.

The synthetic turf fields at UWS are due to be replaced later in the season. The players really miss playing on the ̒ waterʼ turf. This field was declared too dangerous for hockey to be played on last season. At the last Federal election funds were promised to replace this field and with work scheduled to start in the next couple of weeks, officials are hoping to have the new field operational in September.

The Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions U/14 Division 1 AFL team have started their season strongly winning 6 out of their opening 7 games. They have scored a commanding 566 points and conceded only 148 points. Their only loss of the season came at the hands of Campbelltown, a team that they beat earlier in the season by over 50 points.

Emu Heights resident Brett Savage recently participated in the Tour de Cure, a 1,379km bike ride from Sydney to Melbourne to raise money in the fight against cancer. Brett raised an astounding $12,000 to take part in the gruelling 10 day ride which finished at the MCG.

Onlookers may have looked twice when witnessing two young men hugging on the 2nd green at Leonay Golf Course - this was the outcome when Emu Heights local Joel Baines hit a hole-in-one in the April school holidays. Joel, a PE teacher, was having a social game with mate Tim Wrigley when his 9 iron pitched one metre before the pin and bounced straight in the hole. A rare achievement that any golfer would be proud of.

Emu Plains Hockey Clubʼs Andrea Seymour has been selected in a Hockey Australia futures squad. We look forward to hearing more about Andreaʼs success in the future.

Leonay teenager, Thomas ʻTomʼ Romer made his debut for the Penrith Panthers Toyota Cup team in their Rd 11 clash against the West Tigers. Whilst the Panthers went down 44-16, Tom, playing at lock in the forward pack, made an impressive start to his Grade Rugby League career.

Emu Plains Netball Club 13C Rubies started the season with 6 players and have increased to 8. A delightful bunch of young girls whom are all trying hard and making new friends, they are gaining in confidence and skills each week. Coach Kylie Carlin is doing an excellent job in her first year of coaching!

The Emu Plains Netball Club is into their 42nd season and still growing. This season the club has a record 31 teams, which is an increase of 8 teams since the 2009 season.

A strong contingent of triathletes from Panthers Tri Club competed in the

Annual Port Macquarie Ironman in May. With over 1000 triathletes from all over the world competing in this event, Panthers represented over 10% of the field which ensured plenty of support for our athletes. Emily Imber is a sports loving youngster from Emu Heights Public School who has participated in a range of sports such as Little Athletics, gymnastics, tumbling, swimming and physical culture. But it is ice skating that has captured her heart.

Ice skating is such a technical sport that requires a great deal of discipline and Emilyʼs coach Sharyn Renshaw, a highly accomplished National level ice skater and 2010 Dehli Commonwealth Games gold medallist for lawn bowls, believes Emily has what it takes to succeed in this sport.

“Emily seems to have everything going for her. She has the motivation and desire, matched with a great attitude. Young skaters with her ability donʼt come along too often”, says Sharyn.

Asked whether Emily has what it takes to make a career out of skating, Sharyn says, “itʼs difficult to tell as there are so many factors that can impact on young skaters as they get older. But Emily is certainly a talented skater and is better than most people her age who have been skating for much longer”.

EPPS X-COUNTRYThe Emu Plains Public School Cross Country Team competed at the recent Penrith District Cross Country carnival held at Jamison Park.

The 8, 9 and 10 years teams ran a 2000m course while 11 and 12yrs teams ran a 3000m course.Competing against 25 other local schools, more than half of the team were placed in the first 50 positions of their races. Of these, seven students were placed in the first 8 positions of their age races leading to their selection in the District Team.

The District Team will be competing at the Regional, Sydney West Area, carnival to be held at Castle Hill in June this year.

The students to compete at Regional carnival are Aaron Morris, Jeremy Crawshaw, Emma Carlin, Michael McElroy, Lily Hubble, Rachel Willis and Ashleigh McAlpine.

Nepean High School was transformed into an athletics precinct May 18 and 19 for the running of their annual Athletics Carnival. The carnival, held over two days, saw a mix of both competitive and novelty events such as tug-of-war, gumboot throwing, captain ball and tunnel ball. With some outstanding individual results being achieved, it is noteworthy to mention that 100% of students participated in a least one track event throughout the carnival.

NHS ATHLETICS

Over 40 children from Emu Heights Public School recently competed at the Penrith District Cross Country. The school team ranging in ages from 8 to 12 included many children who had never competed at District events b e f o r e . T h e t e a m p e r f o r m e d magnificently with over 80% of children achieving a personal best place or time.

Kirra Boland, Hannah Norman and Jack Pearce will go on to represent Penrith District at the Regional Cross Country this month.

CLUB CHAMPIONSEmu Plains Cricket Club maintained its position as a dominant force in the Nepean District in 2010/11, taking out the Nepean District Cricket Association Senior Club Championship. This is a first for EPCC, winning the prestigious award on the back of some consistent t e a m a n d b r i l l i a n t i n d i v i d u a l performances.

The club held its annual Presentation Dinner in May and celebrated a fantastic season whereby eight senior players were recognised with District awards. The only blemish on an otherwise successful season for the club was that there was no premiership winning team out of the five senior teams to make the semi finals. Only the 3rd Grade team, captained by Jim M i c s k o , m a d e t h e fi n a l b u t unfortunately they fell short at the last hurdle after dominating the competition throughout the year.

It was a different story for the junior teams though with the U/12s taking out the title for the second consecutive year. A huge achievement from a team of dedicated young players. The U/11 and U/14 teams had successful seasons finishing runners up in nail

biters that could have gone either way on the day.

In all, EPCC provided an opportunity for over 220 children and adults to play the great game of cricket, fielding nine junior teams and seven senior teams.

The club also conducted an In2Cricket program which was again a great s u c c e s s . H e a d C o a c h C h r i s Longhurst and his band of helpers did a terrific job for a third year in a row, providing an opportunity for youngsters to learn about the game in a fun and friendly environment. EPCC places great importance on this program, as it provides the next wave of cricketers into the junior ranks. “It was fantastic to witness this bunch having so much fun on sunny Saturday mornings at Darcy Smith Oval. Chris is very committed to this program and is to be commended for its success”, says Martin Bowerman, President of EPCC.

Acknowledgement needs to be made to Peter Gibson who won Clubman of the Year at the Presentation Dinner for his tireless efforts for the club as a player, coach and committee member.

Alfred Richard Williams, or “Dickie” as he was affectionately known, passed away recently at the ripe old age of 90. A good dig for a cricket tragic who was still playing cricket well into his sixties.

A farmerʼs son from Western Australia, Dickie lived with his wife Mary in Leonay for over 35 years where they raised their 5 sons. He was one of the founding players for Panthers Cricket Club and coached his sonʼs junior teams for many years. Those coached by him recall his ability to focus on the strength of every player he coached, rather than try and fix all of their faults.

Dickie had a knowledge for the game of cricket that could be matched by few. He was an umpire for the Nepean District Cricket Association for 15 years and could site the most obscure laws of the game precisely as they were worded in the rule book.

A regular fixture at Emu Plains 1st Grade games, Dickie would come and watch his son Andrew and support all players in the team.

A trademark of Dickieʼs was to sit in the car and beep the horn according to the shot that was played by the Emu Plains batsmen. One beep, “good shot”. Two beeps, “poor shot, keep your head down”. He also had plenty of advice. Due to him playing in an era when the bats werenʼt as strong and powerful as they are now, he would insist on the ball being hit along the ground. “You get just as many runs along the ground as you do hitting it in the air”. Or, “four singles are worth just as many runs as a boundary”.

A great man, Dickie will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.

ULTRA MARATHON MENLeonay locals Grant MacFadden and Shane Simpson have completed the gruelling North Face 100 ultra marathon in a remarkable time of 12:23:44 and 12:54:39 respectively. This is a truly inspirational achievement given the conditions runners have to endure just to complete the event in the 28 hour cut-off time. Their efforts also positioned them in the top 45 out of over 700 competitors.

The ultra marathon is a 100km run through some of the toughest terrain that our World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains has to offer. Runners start the race at The Fairmont Resort in Leura and make their way along some treacherous stretches of land that include the Megalong Valley, Kedumba Pass and parts of the famous Six Foot Track, before completing the race where it all began in Leura.

Renowned internationally as one of the ultimate trail marathons, the NF100 attracts some of the best runners in the world. This year, Spaniard Killien Jornet won the race in 9hours and 20 minutes. An achievement that us mere mortals can only shake our heads at in bewilderment.

While there are checkpoints along the way for the athletes to pick up fuel supplies or receive medical attention if necessary, each athlete is required to carry with them a number of mandatory items. Such items include, a thermal shirt, pants, gloves and jacket, beanie, high visibility vest, headlamp, compass, mobile phone, maps of the course, first aid supplies and adequate food and drink. Mandatory equipment checks are carried out randomly by officials at checkpoints and time penalties are conceded if athletes are not carrying all of the required gear.

A great deal of training and personal sacrifice goes into preparing for an ultra marathon like this and it was not uncommon for Grant and Shane to complete over 160km of running per week in the lead up to this event.

Some weekends would consist of a 54km run from Glenbrook to Leura on a Saturday morning, followed by a light 30km run the following day. Usually, these training sessions were conducted well before sunrise with the only guiding light being that from a head lamp.

EXCITING TIMES FOR SWIMMING CLUBThe Wizards Swim Team and Nepean Swimming Club have joined forces to form the new Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club in what is believed will be a huge benefit to members of both clubs. Swimmers will be training and competing out of the purpose built Nepean Aquatic Centre which will provide an extraordinary venue for the clubʼs members to ensure the swimmers are given every opportunity to train and compete to the best of their ability.

President of the Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club, Stephen Hardy, says, “The club provides an introduction to the sport of swimming in a safe, fun environment. Swimming can be enjoyed at any age and the new club encourages children to get involved in swimming either as an active recreational pursuit or for competition. The point score program conducted at club night is targeted for children of all ages and abilities, with the emphasis on participation and self development”.

“Each club night the swimmers have three swims, freestyle and two of the form strokes (Back, Breast & Butterfly) with swimmers choosing the distance they want to swim, 25m, 50m or 100m. Swimmers are graded on ability, not in age groups, and are awarded points for participation and improving their own personal best times”.

In line with the state of the art Nepean Aquatic Centre facility, the swimming club has purchased an electronic wireless timing system that is used at its club nights. This allows times to be recorded and sent automatically to an electronic database. Swimmers are also able to enter their events online for Friday night swim meets and results will be posted on the club website.

The Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club is encouraging children of all ages to join. Children are invited to come along to any club night and participate in the activities before joining as a trial. Club night commences at 7pm sharp every Friday evening.
