The Edmunds Middle School Boys “B” basketball team played a solid game against Colchester January, 8th showing much improvement as part of a win to start off the new year. The Seahawks had balanced scoring, and were able to overcome Colchester’s strong rebounding for the 27-17 win. Outscored by far too much of the first half and going into the third quarter the Cougar’s turned things around after picking up 4 steals and two blocked shots in the final minutes of the fourth quarter almost giving the Seahawks a scare. The game began a real battle with 2:00 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when the Cougars scored 29 percent of their total points. 2 of the 5 points were field goals and one was from the free-throw line. Colchester shot only 25% percent at the charity stripe compared to an Edmunds 75% in the fourth quarter. After Colchester blocked two shots for scores, the Cougars called a timeout with the score 27:15 and 15.3 seconds remaining, Seahawks Coach Gary Rodgers called his team to the sideline telling them to finish strong. Colchester followed the timeout with a score and steal and picked up a foul going up for a lay-up, both shots were missed and the Seahawks rebounded and ran out the clock to win.

has been going on for over 10 years. 6th Grade teacher Mr. Chandler founded the program, and has been running it since the startup. He be-gan playing at the age of five. Mr. Chandler not only enjoys playing Ping-Pong, but he also has an interesting family history in the sport. His father’s cousin played on a USA Ping-Pong team that went to play China in the 1970’s. Mr. Chandler himself also actively participates in competitions as well. He has played in the Vermont State Tournament. The program started 10 years ago with the donation of two tables.

A few kids would stay after and play in Mrs. Lavigne’s room. Eventually as the program ex-panded, locations changed over the years. Ping-Pong was played on the Gym Stage, and under-neath the Cafeteria for a few years. Now the program is lo-cated in the basement hallway. One of the most interesting years Mr. Chandler recalled was when he had an eighth grade girl in ping pong, whose father was the coach of the Bosnian National Ping-Pong Team. He came and played with the kids and showed them some skills. Every year the program ends with a Tournament in singles, doubles, and student-teacher doubles. This is always a favorite. Students select a teacher to partner up with for a doubles tournament. Kids have fun finding a teacher to play against. Due to record numbers this year, Mr. Chandler is cur-rently looking for the donation of more foldable rolling tables. You can contact him by email at: [email protected]

Three Edmunds 8th grade Navigator students have taken on a project- to spread the message that reading is good. Molly Higgins, Katherine Sheeser, Claire MacQueen have organized a blog with a picture of each navigator student reading, along with a quote each student has made up about why they read. The blog,

http://navigatorreaders.tumblr.com/, has pages for each navigator class. So, if you see them in the library taking pic-tures or asking for quotes, help them spread the message.

Quotes about reading from famous writers:

“We read to know we are not alone” -C.S. Lewis

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” -Fredrick Douglas

“The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read.” - Mark Twain

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark” -Victor Hugo

Note: The tunnel is very eerie and there is the sound of the wind, but you can’t feel it. Sage and I found two cool things in the tunnel. See the pictures and the two things we found. Also In another tunnel near the boiler room we found a newspaper from December 19, 1989.

Teased Ponytail: Put your hair in a basic pony-tail, high or low doesn't matter but a low one would work best with very long hair. Put elastics down the ponytail every 2-3 inches, or 1 inch if you have short hair. Use small, thin, covered elastics -or rubber bands- that are

close to the color of your hair. Pull the elastics down a little bit and then up again for pretty poof. Voila! Accessorize with a cute headband or head wrap.

Scrunch look: Take a shower or make sure your hair is wet. Comb through your hair and make sure that is thor-oughly combed. Towel dry your hair, but not completely. Your hair still needs to be damp. Take some mousse -- use more if you have thick hair -- and scrunch your hair in your hand. Add some Aloe Vera shine serum.

Messy Bun: Start by washing your hair or just rinsing it. Then brush your hair back, leaving you without a part. Take small sections of hair and "scrunch" (with gel) sec-tions up to desired height of bun. Secure with a hair tie and add some mousse. Make the bun look loose with hair spray and gel. Tousle with fingers to make more of a messy look.

Side Ponytail: Put in a low pony tail to the side, near the nape of your neck, leave a few strings of hair for a messy, i-just-got-out-of-bed-but-look-so-awesome look, and pin away any hairs that are too long to look good left out but too short to put in the pony tail.

Half Up: Flip your hair upside-down and part your hair horizon-tally about a 1/3 away from your hairline. Brush the ponytail smooth or leave it messy. Secure with a hair-tie or a hair-clip.

Isabelle Vansuch and Morgan Liska are starting a Taylor Swift fan club starting January 7. The two girls will be organizing the club themselves. The EMS Press sat down in an interview with each of them individually. Interview with Morgan Liska (Co-Founder of Taylor Swift Fan Club) EMS Press: How did you get the idea to start the Taylor Swift fan club? Morgan: Izzy and I were writing an article for the EMS Press about Taylor Swift and we were in the middle of writing the article, looking at her web site and tour dates and I had an idea. My idea was to start a Taylor Swift fan club, so we talked to Ms. D. and next thing you know, we were making flyers and posting them around school. EMS Press: How many people do you think will join your club? Morgan: Well, Izzy and I have been doing a lot of the

Everyone loves Activity Day! That one fun day right before vacation when everyone gets to choose be-tween bowling, watching a movie, and, of course, ice skating! But is there anything students would like done differently? Any other activities they’d like to try? I asked some students and this is what I came up with.

Interview with an anonymous seventh grader, who went skating: Q: What do you like about Activity Day? A: I like the freedom of just getting to the activity, and being free to do whatever you want. Q: Is there anything you’d like to change? A: I would like to get there earlier, because I think we need a little bit more time. But I like getting back at 2 o’clock.

Another seventh grader, Morgan, a movie-goer, was interviewed next. Q: This is your first year at Edmunds. What did you think of Activity Day? A: I thought it was pretty fun, they never had any-thing like this at my old school. Q: Is there anything you’d like to change? A: I think we should be able to vote for what movie

we want to see.

I then talked to a sixth grader, Alex, who went skat-ing. Q: This is your first Activity Day. How was it? A: It was really cool. It was fun to not do any school-work and just have a day of fun. Q: Are there any other activities you’d like to see? A: It would be cool if they offered swimming.

In addition to interviews, I also asked Coach Thrane about the number of students who went to all the ac-tivities this year. Approximately 100 students went bowling, 100 went ice skating, and 168 went to the movie. Wow! What a great turnout!

There is an exhibit at BCA Studio in downtown, Burlington on 135 Church Street. John Anderson is a Vermont - based architect and artist. John uses techniques such as blurring the boundaries between two-dimensional drawing and three-dimensional space. Constructed Conceptual brings together four different bodies of work in which paper and graphite drawings are uniquely cut, torn, rolled, twisted, folded, and painted to create dy-namic sculptural objects, and al-phabets of line and color. The shows are from November 30,2012 to January 19, 2013.
