Future Plans in Dentistry

I am excited to embark on a lifelong journey full of learning, to build upon the knowledge and clinical skillset that I have gained throughout dental school, through continuing professional developments and various clinical exposures.

Personal Interests

I love spending time with my family and friends, venturing new places and trying out new cafes and restaurants.

Painting is also something I have been getting into recently and I alternate between that and yoga in my leisure time.

Roles BDS 3 Class Representative AUDSS Publications General Committee Officer (2021) Insight Global Health General Committee Officer (2021)

I have a passion for all aspects relating to Endodontics. It is a field I absolutely love — and can even say, find therapeutic… I also have a deep regard for Aesthetic Dentistry and Prosthodontics, as I feel that it poses some of the biggest challenges regarding patient management and expectations in our profession.

I have been fortunate enough to complete several direct and indirect veneer cases during my clinical experience. This has given me invaluable personal insight into the workflow and challenges that underpin Aesthetic Dentistry.

Moreover, I simply enjoy my time in treating patients, particularly initially phobic patients. The ability to help achieve a positive outcome they often did not expect to find when visiting the dentist, is always rewarding, and at times, humbling.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I have a determined drive to continue learning and growing throughout my career in Dentistry, never becoming complacent. I would like to further develop my clinical and practice administrative skills, with guided mentorship, and professional development, as ultimately, I believe Dentistry is a vast and comprehensive world of its own.

Initially after graduation, I would like to attend CPDs focussing on Patient Communication/Management, as well as Complex Treatment Planning, and the various Endodontic rotary file systems available today. I believe these are fundamentally crucial areas for a new graduate. I aim to one day return to university, and undertake further postgraduate study and research.

Personal Interests

In my spare time, I love hiking, and going for walks, with my wife whenever we get the chance. I also have a keen interest for architecture, and as such have developed a love for landscaping and gardening, particularly bonsai tending. It seems sad — or almost deliberately sadistic to say so in this day and age — but I loved to travel overseas. I yearn for the day we can again.

As such, you’ll often find me rewatching hotel/resort travel reviews on YouTube, living vicariously through the vlogger (that is, of course, if I am not rewatching Succession, or The Crown).

I value the opportunity to build long-lasting relationships with my patients and develop highly individualised treatment plans that align with their chief concerns.

I’m particularly passionate about working with dentally anxious patients, to ensure their oral health isn’t impeded by an overwhelming fear or perception that has the potential to change!

I’m also intrigued by the problem-solving aspect of our profession and enjoy the steps leading up to a diagnosis. I find contentment in resolving an issue, whether it’s addressing a source of pain, or if it’s perhaps aesthetic, or functional in nature.

Future Plans in Dentistry

As a new graduate, I aim to strengthen my skills across all areas of general dentistry. I want to ensure a well-considered approach to treatment planning and consistent, high-quality care that’s reflective of my patients’ treatment goals. In time, I hope to extend my knowledge and skillset to include aesthetic dentistry, implantology, minor oral surgery and simple orthodon-tics through sufficient training.

Ultimately, I’d love the opportunity to contribute to a positive and productive workspace. The guidance of an encouraging mentor and team would be immensely appreciated, and every learning opportunity would be grasped.

Personal Interests

Outside of dentistry, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, especially by the beach.

I’m also a self-proclaimed music fanatic. I love discovering new artists but will admittedly fall back on my same three comfort songs at the end of the day.

From my experience gained through clinical placements, I have enjoyed all disciplines within the scope of general dental practice.

I have particular interest in oral surgery, oral hygiene and education and restorative dentistry. I enjoy the patient communication aspect of dentistry, especially building rapport with patients to both develop long-lasting relationships with them and to help them maintain their oral health.

Moreover, I have enjoyed increasing my knowledge and skill in all general dentistry disciplines and have found tailoring treatment plans is crucial to creating the highest quality patient centred care.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I believe dentistry is a constantly evolving profession where continued learning is essential. I aim to initially strengthen my communication and treatment planning, then use this as a foundation to develop my skills as a clinician and undertake further training in areas such as oral surgery, digital dentistry, implantology and endodontics.

I would like to be included in a supportive team that will allow me to learn to gain experience and refine my skills. Furthermore, I would like to return to university as a tutor to help educate and mentor future dental students in clinical dentistry.

Through my experience in clinic and rural placements, I enjoy the challenges and the wide scope of general dentistry poses which requires understanding and proficiency of multiple specialist disciplines.

General dentistry is versatile and flexible provides me an opportunity to explore, gain experience and reach a better understanding of the different disciplines – an important point for me that will help me decide if I want to specialize in the future.

I have also come to appreciate meeting patients from different walks of life, building rapport and their company – all of which I believe is crucial to provide the best patient experience.

If I had to pick from the various disciplines, I have become somewhat partial towards resin bonding, fixed prosthetics, digital dentistry, and endodontics as I find them rather interesting and am looking forward to gaining more experience in these fields.

Future Plans in Dentistry

My immediate plan as a new graduate is to continue learning, trying new technologies in dentistry, exploring different concepts, and honing my communicative and hand skills. All of which I believe is the foundation of a competent, empathetic, and confident dentist. I plan to get to this stage by participating in CPD courses, doing my own reading, filling gaps in my own knowledge, joining masterclasses, and trying out the ever-expanding advancements in dentistry.

I hope to keep up to date in a bid to continuously develop myself and provide quality care to my patients. I look forward to working in family-oriented, supportive dental practice and learn from experienced mentors. I also look forward to possibly specializing in the future.

I enjoy learning more about my patients and their view of dentistry in my attempt to give them a nice experience each time they visit the dentist. Besides General Dentistry am interested in Prosthodontics and Endodontics and hope to build my knowledge and skills in these fields over time while working in private and public practice.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I plan to spend my first few years as a fresh graduate improving my skills and understanding of general dentistry. I intend to learn more about CEREC, implantology, invest in CPD courses related to endodontics, prosthodontics, and surgical extractions. Digital dentistry has always stimulated my curiosity and I want to gain more knowledge about it going forward to stay on top of the latest technological developments in dentistry and learning how I can incorporate them in patient care.

Besides that, I would like to better myself as a dentist under mentorship and guidance from senior practitioners in private and public practice. I hope to work in an encouraging dental practice for new dentists and become a caring, quality clinician. Having learnt so much from the community during my dental school years, I would love to focus on giving back to the community one day through multiple volunteering endeavors. After gaining more exposure, I aim to seek the potential to specialize in the future.

Over the years I have grown to appreciate the wide scope of general dentistry and performing various procedures for my patients. This has given me the opportunity and flexibility to explore and hone my skills in multiple specialties that exist within dentistry.

Also, providing different types of treatments have taught me about forming treatment plans from different angles in dentistry for well-rounded care and a holistic treatment approach for patients.

I am a strong believer in patient communication as I feel building good rapport with patients helps them develop a healthy relationship with dentistry which in turns leads to better quality dental visits.

Education

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (University of Adelaide, 2017-2021)

As a recent graduate, I am motivated to learn new skills and expand my scope of practice as much as possible.

I place great value in building rapport with my patients as I appreciate the trust and faith they place in me. While I enjoy the challenges and flexibility involved in the broad range of general dentistry, I have found paediatric dentistry, exodontia and endodontics to be quite rewarding.

Occlusal rehabilitation, implantology and prosthodontics, such as CEREC and modern dental technology, are areas I am interested in learning more about in the future.

Future Plans in Dentistry

After graduating, I aim to refine and polish my skills in all areas of general dentistry to provide high quality care. I hope to work with a mentor and establish myself as part of an effective dental team to further grow as a clinician.

There are a range of CPD courses I intend to participate in, such as implantology, prosthodontics and surgical exodontia to further broaden my knowledge and skills. In the future, I plan to be part of the volunteering community to provide patient-centred care for the underprivileged.

Personal Interests

I love attending musicals, and enjoy a myriad of activities such as swimming, badminton, piano, arts and crafts (such as making birthday cards and origami).

Recently I have found an interest in rock climbing and I hope to refine my ukulele skills in time. Admittedly, I am most often found in the kitchen baking cakes in order to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings!

I see myself thoroughly enjoying general dental practice, as I’ve found every specialty stimulating thus far. However, I have particularly enjoyed my experiences in endodontics, prosthodontics and providing dental care for children.

Active exploration into better understanding the spectrum of patient needs led me to pursuing the subject of my Honours degree as well as an elective rotation in the Special Needs Unit, which greatly enhanced my appreciation for providing dental care to vulnerable members of our community.

I also look forward to becoming proficient in the use of modern technologies including CEREC, lasers and rotary endodontics, as I embrace the future of digital dentistry and am appreciative of its value in everyday practice.

Future Plans in Dentistry

My core value of philanthropic service is at the forefront of my dental career, and I hope to be part of a dental team that collectively reflects this sentiment and is passionate about the provision of equitable oral health care.

I hope to gain a wealth of experience under knowledgeable mentors across the entire breadth of dentistry, ideally with opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary care. I can see my dedication to dentistry and love for teaching others evolving into a mentoring role in the future, and I aim to engage in ongoing community service in the national and international spheres.

Personal Interests

Fitness, in the forms of figure and synchronised ice skating, pilates and endurance hiking are energising hobbies, and I love the feeling of starting from scratch and then exceeding my envisaged goals. Creative outlets in the form of sewing and sketching have always acted as a mindful way to wind down for me. I also particularly enjoy experimenting with baking to discover healthy ways of making sweet treats – it doesn’t always go to plan, but again, I love a challenge!

Previous Employment

I worked as a Post Office Staff Member (2020-2021) for Australia Post’s Enfield branch in NSW. My duties involved serving customers and back-office parcel management.

My growth-oriented and problem-solving mindset generated positive change in this workspace; after I installed multi-tier shelving units to better utilise empty space around the shop, storage capacity was doubled and parcel retrieval time halved.

I spent time as a Higher School Certificate English Tutor (2016-2017) in Sydney, NSW.

Clear communication was a crucial aspect of this role, as detailed but targeted explanations were required to cognise writing concepts. My students went on to achieve significantly higher marks for their work (90+%).

I was employed as a Waitress (2016) at Michel’s Patisserie, Campbelltown NSW. This customer service role aided in honing my interpersonal skills which I utilise in connecting with my patients to date.

I enjoy the journey of getting to know my patients & developing long lasting relationships with them to provide tailored patient centered care.

I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of dentistry but have a passion for preventative and restorative care (with a budding interest in biomimetic dentistry), fixed prosthodontics (particularly incorporating digital dentistry) and aesthetic dentistry.

I believe that taking the time to form genuine connections and build trust with patients is the cornerstone to providing continuing care and achieving patient satisfaction.

I appreciate the challenges that dentistry offers, particularly when devising holistic management plans tailored to provide the best individualised care for patients with different priorities, expectations, and motivation levels.

The aspect of dentistry I find the most gratifying is working with anxious patients to overcome their dental fear and provide them with the care they truly deserve.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I hope to build a strong long-term patient base by being a compassionate clinician who creates a warm and welcoming environment for my patients and everyone within the dental team.

I am motivated to continue refining my skills and knowledge beyond Dental School to provide the highest standard of care for all my patients.

I enjoy the diversity and variety of challenges that general dentistry offers and being able to practise a range of clinical skills.

I find developing long-lasting relationships with my patients and helping them improve their oral health very rewarding. I am particularly interested in the fields of periodontics, oral surgery, and restorative dentistry, and how these areas are constantly evolving and developing.

Future Plans in Dentistry

Beyond building upon the skills and knowledge I have learnt in dental school, I hope to provide holistic care to my patients and to be able to see the long-term outcomes of the treatment.

I would like to undertake further training in aesthetic & digital dentistry and implantology to expand my scope of dentistry and provide my patients with the best possible care. I would also like to continue my volunteering work in Australia and overseas.

I truly believe in providing a positive experience for my patients and working together towards achieving good oral health.

Future Plans in Dentistry

Education

• Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Major in Nutrition and Metabolism) - University of Otago 2014-2016.

• Bachelor of Dental Surgery - University of Adelaide 2017-2021

The aspect of dentistry which I have found most enjoyable is the broad variety of treatment which I can provide within a given day, whether that is getting someone out of pain or improving their smile.

The specific fields which I am currently most passionate about are: biomimetic restorative, endodontics and oral surgery.

The use of modern digital planning is an area which fascinates me, as it shows so much promise in providing such predictable patient tailored results. While dental school has given us limited exposure to some of these techniques, its an area which I am very keen to learn more about and be able to implement into my own practice.

Future Plans in Dentistry

At this stage, with every case being so unique due only practicing dentistry for such a short time, my immediate goals are to try consolidate my skills in providing high quality preventative and restorative care.

In the future, I hope to be able to broaden my scope with the goal to be able to provide fully comprehensive care for all my patients, whether that be involving minor oral surgeries and implant placement, or providing high quality aesthetic restorative treatment.

With the scope that general dental practice allows, there are so many new techniques and types of treatment modalities to learn that I can never see an end to the learning and self improvement which I will be able to strive for.

Personal Interests

In my free time, however limited that may sometimes be, I enjoy being social and active especially a combination wherever possible. Staying physically fit and healthy is important to me and after work I am a regular at my local gym, and on the odd occasion you’ll find me doing a little bit of social yoga (have to keep up that flexibility, no back injuries thanks).

In my weekends I enjoy getting out on my mountain bike, playing a round of golf or meeting up with some friends to go out for a meal and some drinks. More recently with my placement in Tasmania, most of my free time is used simply exploring the local countryside or hunting out the best local breweries.

Thoroughly enjoying all aspects of general dentistry, whether it be scale & clean, restorative, crowns/veneers/bridgework, dentures, endodontics, or extractions. I do however find the most rewarding procedures involve alleviation of pain or to enhance patient’s aesthetics, and as such, extirpation and aesthetic restorative work have been my favourite procedures performed by far.

I also have a keen interest to work with CADCAM/CEREC, intra-oral scanners & cameras, and dental photography along with other digital dentistry technological advances that I find so fascinating.

I love working with patients of all ages ranging from children to geriatric, and see great value in forming positive connections to maintain a strong patient base whilst building on new ones. My passion ultimately lies in making a positive impact on the patient, the practice, and the people I work with, so that every day at work will be an enjoyable yet fulfilling one.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I am a strong believer that dentistry is not only about fixing people’s teeth, but also about soothing people’s hearts and mind about their dental concerns.

Therefore, my first goal is to build on patient communication so that I can achieve convincing, clear, and concise communication at all times while allowing my patients to feel appropriately cared for and listened to.

My next goal would be to strengthen my treatment planning and treatment acceptance with patients such as performing quadrant dentistry that allows me to provide holistic care in a more time and cost-effective manner.

In the near future, I wish to expand my scope to learn advanced techniques with Aesthetic Dentistry, Orthodontic Clear Aligners/Invisalign Go, and Implantology including full mouth rehabilitation cases.

Overall, I aspire to be a highly-skilled clinician that is able to maximize on comfort and minimize on anxiety to make sure patients are leaving the clinic more than satisfied after every visit.

Personal Interests

I use my free time to do the simple things I enjoy the most: watching a new movie, my favourite YouTube channel, Netflix, catching up with friends over brunch, road-trips, & travelling overseas to explore new cultures (pre-COVID). I am also a big fan of music, be it pop, jazz, classical, and have been playing the piano ever since young. Learning interestI believe that there is always room for new knowledge and I love that I get to learn new things every day in dentistry. Being a dentist allows me to adopt an evidence-based practice which are proven to improve patient outcomes based on research evidence.

Practical interestI enjoy dentistry as it is very practical and hands-on. I love working with machinery and with advancing technology I am keen to explore the upcoming dental products and technologies.

I also enjoy problem-solving activities and I find dentistry helps to enhance my critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Social interest I enjoy working with people as it helps build my interpersonal and communication skills. I am passionate in educating patients with clinical knowledge, giving advice to them and helping them because with the right information, they will be driven to make better choices.

Future Plans in Dentistry

Career aspiration wise, my short-term goal following graduation is to work full-time in either public or private centres or both so that I can continue to develop my clinical skills and dexterity and equip myself with professional experience working in both settings.

Personally, I believe that gaining professional experience is my top priority after graduating therefore I am hoping that I will gain the opportunity to participate in a mentorship or graduate program to aid my transition to be an independent dentist.

In terms of long-term goal, I intend to pursue my interest in either endodontics or orthodontics, which I will further explore my potential specialist interest after I graduate.

Personal Interests

• Doing outdoor and sporty activities - I have always been keen in keeping myself fit and healthy. I hike a lot with my group of friends and I do long-distance running every few days to help boost my stamina and mental strength. I also find doing outdoor activities therapeutic and a good form of escapism.

• Drawing and painting – I do a lot of creative work such as sketching, digital illustration and acrylic art on canvas during my free time as it allows me to explore my creative side and refine my manual dexterity.

• Volunteering in community service or charity work – I used to participate in a lot of volunteering work back in Malaysia to help underprivileged kids learn English and other subjects in school. Currently I am volunteering at a local op shop in Adelaide every week, which involves a lot of sorting and organising work. I enjoy doing volunteering work as it helps me build new relationships with new people and allows me to serve back to my community.

Previous Employment

Since I am a recent graduate of 2021, I have no previous experience working as a dentist nor as an assistant or staff within the clinical setting. I have however shadowed a few dentists working in several clinics and volunteered to assist where needed. From this experience I have observed and learned a lot about patient management and how to work closely with different team members and I thoroughly enjoyed the time I had in the clinics.

I am interested in all aspects of general dentistry I am particularly passionate about being able to rebuild dentitions and provide patients with the confidence and ability to smile again.

I want the ability to offer all treatment modalities to patients and help build a trusting relationship to ultimately make the dental experience as enjoyable and welcoming as possible for all my patients. My particular dental interests align in two predominant fields: 1. cosmetic/aesthetic dentistry – veneers, crowns, bridges,

resin composites 2. surgery – oral surgery, implant surgery, wisdom

tooth removal I also have a particular interest in new technological developments and the exciting new ways we can offer care for patients. Future Plans in Dentistry

My future plans in Dentistry is to work and gain as much experience as possible in the next few years. I would love to explore my interests in aesthetic dentistry and hone my skills in being able to give patients the smile they have dreamt about. I am also sitting my RACDS Primary Exams this year (2021) as a final year dental student and am considering a Graduate Diploma in future.

My long-term goal would be to eventually be able to open up a dental clinic of my own. Furthermore, I would love the opportunity to one day be able to come back to a dental school and tutor to give back and educate students and guide them in their paths in Dentistry as well.

Personal Interests

A lot of my personal interests are related to physical activities, and I tend to have a lot of concurrent interests to keep myself entertained and de-stressed. Currently, I am quite enthusiastic about running, hiking, bouldering and going to the gym.

Throughout BDS4 and 5 a significant interest in Endodontics ensued. Concurrently a particular passion for trauma developed and I enjoy spending time with endodontists discussing cases (invasive cervical resorption being a special interest to me).

Additionally, holistic patient rehabilitation through endodontics/fixed prosthodontics while maintaining a healthy periodontium is another interest of mine. I would be keen to learn more about the restorative side of implants as a result of this.

Another one of my more niche interests is indemnity and the medico-legal aspect of dental and medical care.

Coming to the conclusion of my dental degree, there are three aspects in particular which I’m passionate about:

• Endodontics (molars especially), crown and bridge and patient education. Molar endodontics, and difficult endodontic procedures in general are my preferred flavour of dentistry as I do enjoy the challenge involved with such cases. I believe it can be incredibly rewarding for all parties involved; for the operator gaining a sense of accomplishment, the patient able to save their tooth and to the practice (as molar endo can be an incredible practice builder).

• In terms of crown and bridge, I particularly enjoy the technical elements involved as well as the discernible impact it can have on a patient psyche.

• Finally, during my undergraduate degree, often the patients who have left the greatest impressions on me were those who made committed attempts to successfully change their oral health behaviours. I find it incredibly fulfilling to have such an influence.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I hope that within the first few years I’m exposed to a large scope of dental practice to allow me to build a solid foundation for my future career.

I aim to attend relevant CPD courses associated with developing myself in the fields of implant (restorative and surgical) and digital dentistry, smile design, full mouth rehabilitation/ restoring vertical dimension and aesthetic composite resin placement. After develop-ing a wide range of skills, I aim to further develop my-self in areas I find particularly intriguing/challenging.

Personal Interests

In my free time, I do enjoy going on hikes, playing a wide variety of sports (basketball, tennis, badminton, cricket) and spending quality time with friends and family.

Previous Employment

In terms of dentistry, I have shadowed at numerous dental practices (i.e. Northgate Dental Care, Gawler Dental Care and Oakden Dental Care) to gain the relevant exposure in private practice dentistry.

Primarily, I was an independent high-school (Chemistry, Biology and Maths) and UCAT tutor and was able to work approximately 20 hours/ week concurrently with my undergraduate degree.

Additionally, I have also been employed in numerous part-time roles such as in charity organisations (UNHCR) and fast food restaurants (McDonalds and Dominos). This illustrates my ability to balance numerous commitments simultaneously.

Education

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (International Medical University 2016-2018, University of Adelaide 2019-2021)

I enjoy practicing general dentistry, with special interests in pain management, restorative, and minor oral surgery. My passion for dentistry includes tailoring individualised treatment plan and providing great patient-centred care to help achieve and maintain good oral health and overall wellbeing for patients.

I am also especially interested in delivering refine, meticulous, gentle treatment to anxious patients and establishing good patient rapport to establish long-term partnerships and assured care continuity. As a practitioner, I find enormous satisfaction in relieving patients’ pain, restoring function and smiles, ensuring patients’ comfort, and reducing their dread of seeing the dentist.

Future Plans in Dentistry

My goal as a newly graduated dentist is to work in a dental practice for an extended period of time, ideally under the supervision and mentoring of senior clinicians, to consolidate my ability and knowledge, boost my confidence, and develop my competency as a well-rounded clinician.

I thrive on ensuring a healthy working environment for my co-workers and making patients as comfortable as possible throughout each dental appointment with my gentle, fun, and compassionate demeanour.

In the near future, I hope to broaden my skills and knowledge in areas such as aesthetic dentistry, dental photography, basic orthodontics, implantology, and minor oral surgery.

I look forward to a lifelong journey of learning to be a highly skilled dental clinician through courses and hands-on workshops, as well as staying up to date on dental advances.

Finally, I am dedicated to my personal long-term dental goal of giving back to society by volunteering and providing dental care in developing countries.

Personal Interests

Photography, travelling, going on gastronomic excursions, café hopping, shopping, and travelling are some of my favourite ways to spend quality time with my family and friends. To unwind and relax, I enjoy baking and playing the piano in my spare time. I also enjoy outdoor activities and keep myself physically active by playing the badminton.

Education

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.), University of Adelaide.

PlacementsPort Lincoln SA Dental Service, Noarlunga SA Dental Service, Common Ground Community Outreach Dental Program, Elizabeth SA Dental Service and Adelaide Dental Hospital

I enjoy all areas of general dentistry. My experiences with the different disciplines in dental school have further nurtured my interest in multiple specialties. I love the challenge of tailoring and implementing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary treatment plan for a patient.

I am also interested in communication and behaviour management techniques. I find it very rewarding when anxious patients are confident to return for treatment and regular recalls. Some special interests of mine include periodontics, endodontics, aesthetic restorative dentistry and oral surgery.

Future Plans in Dentistry

My goal is to provide the best dental care I can and to help my patients in their journey to be happy with their smiles. My plan for the near future is to focus on honing in my fundamental clinical and patient management skills.

I am excited to continue learning about new techniques and technology used in general dentistry. I look forward to building trust with my patients and developing a strong patient base. In the long-term, I would love to work on full-mouth rehabilitation cases and further develop my oral surgery skills.

Personal Interests

Outside of dentistry I enjoy the outdoors, music & concerts, cooking and art. I am currently tackling the challenge of painting portraits.

I believe that it helps me develop a better eye for detail, which I have also integrated into improving smiles (e.g. determining facial harmony for anterior composites and prostheses).

Previous Employment

I have a few years’ experience working as part of a dental team in private practice. As a dental assistant and receptionist, I demonstrated my flexibility, organisation and time management skills, during which I also learned some of the cogs and gears involved in private practice.

I also spent time observing and learning from different dentists while assisting them in providing treatment. I was able to further practice my communication and problem solving skills with managing patient queries and concerns over the phone and in the waiting room.

Dental Interests

General Dentistry - I strive for quality improve-ment and feel like there is still so much to learn in terms of how we treat, diagnose and properly manage specific needs of patients related to oral health.

Special Needs - I was exposed to many patients with complex Medical History in my clinical place-ment at Tasmania Oral Health Service. It was rewarding to manage oral heal health problems of geriatric patients, patients with intellectual disabil-ities, and patients with other medical, physical, or psychiatric issues.

Endodontics - I feel like it requires great patience and stress management when it comes to trying to save a tooth. It amazes me how specialists can negotiate through complex root canal systems and come to great results at the end.

Future Plans in Dentistry

• To continue Post graduate studies in a spe-cialty I have most interest in (comes after work experience)

• To work in hospital and education • Practice Dentistry with continued growth and

Tiensa Tran

Education

Bachelor of Dental Surgery, The University of Adelaide

From the start of dental school, I really enjoyed the practical side of dentistry. I love using my hands, shaping the composite and making the teeth look as nice as possible.

Further along my studies, I particularly love when patients see the filling completed and are ecstatic with its appearance. Beyond doing fillings, learning other procedures have increased my hunger for refinement of my skills and learning everything in dentistry. From my experience in dental school,

I am passionate about educating the public about dental health and preventive dentistry. Going home after lectures and sharing what I have learnt to my friends and family, it really has demonstrated to me the difference in the knowledge that people know and what we are taught in dental school.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I am really passionate about educating the public about dental health and preventive dentistry. I wish to participate and organise school programs and become involved in the community to teach the public about oral health.

I believe there is potential in educating the younger population in schools in order to teach the skills to prevent caries and good oral hygiene habits. There are still many in the community who are afraid of the dentist and I believe becoming more involved in the community will help break the stigma on dentists and our profession.

At the moment, I am happy to learn as much general dentistry as I can. However, I will not rule out the possibility of specialising in the future if I find a particular speciality I am passionate about.

Pursuing higher education (e.g. Masters and PhD) is also something I am open to in the future, but for now I want to learn as much as I can.

Personal Interests

When I am not thinking about dentistry, I immerse myself in the arts. Music has always been part of my life, learning piano and violin since I was young and it still carries me throughout my life today. I teach music which has developed my love for educating others and communication skills.

I also paint with a special interest in watercolours and organise painting classes with friends where we select photographs and paint together step by step. It is lots of fun to do with friends who want to try something new and relax a bit. I wish to try other mediums (hopefully acrylic and oil painting) in the future and try doing larger canvas works when I have some more time.

My art instagram account is @thnxsaa if you would like to see my work. I recently bought a camera and have taken much interest in garden photography. I love seeing the changes of the garden plants throughout the year. My photography instagram account is @tranquilityguardianangel which have been taken from my garden.

Previous Employment

During my dental studies, I have found that working as a dental assistant and receptionist really has strengthened my knowledge of dental concepts and processes. I have assisted many different dentists which have demonstrated the many different techniques that each individual dentist has developed over the years. I worked at Semaphore Dental as a dental assistant and Stellar Smiles as a dental assistant and receptionist. Both practices have taught me a lot about working in private dental practices.

Prior to studying dentistry, I was a tutor at KUMON and have been teaching music since 2016. Both jobs have taught me interpersonal skills and patience which really has become an important skill to have when working with patients in the dental clinics.

I also do a lot of volunteer work for the Vietnamese community in South Australia, particularly in offering my talents in performing for major events and festivals.

Education

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (2017-2021), University of Adelaide

I have developed a keen interest in digital dentistry workflow especially after getting to use the Trios Scanner in a CPD workshop. I find myself adept at Fixed Prosthodontics, tackling as many cases as I could in my time as a dental student.

On top of this I have built several 3D printers from scratch myself. I seek to shadow practitioners doing implants to further my own understanding and someday place my own, I also seek further CPD in molar endodontics so that I can tackle slightly harder molar cases as a general dentist.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I plan to further my own understanding and someday place my own: Implantology, Molar endodontics, Surgical extractions, Fixed Prosthodontics and Digital Dentistry, by attending the relevant CPD courses and shadowing practitioners that already pursue these kinds of treatment.

I am very excited to learn more about different and exotic crown materials and what aesthetic implications they have.

Personal Interests

I am an absolutely huge electronics enthusiast, with enough programming and engineering experience to build several 3D printers of different specifications from scratch.

Furthermore I enjoy art in the form of 3D modelling and programming (specifically using C++ in Unreal Engine), and am currently working with Film Victoria to produce a video game and more! In my downtime when I am not working on creative projects, I read, draw, rockclimb, gym and have been taking up an interest in archery!

Previous Employment

At dental school I have undertaken approximately three years of placement treating patients at the Adelaide Dental Hospital, in addition I am currently undertaking a rural placement at the Whyalla Community Dental Clinic for 3 months until the end of the year!

I find enjoyment in all aspects of general dentistry, being able to use a multi-disciplinary approach in managing patient needs and care using a collaborative approach with the dental staff and patient.

My special interests entail for further development in complex cases within endodontics, oral surgery, and aesthetic restorative dentistry. However, I’m highly excited to embrace the latest technology to facilitate more comprehensive, faster, and improved quality dental care.

This would be inclusive of digital dentistry (intra-oral scanners & CAD/CAM). I place an emphasis on patient-centred care, relying on my ability to view my patient’s perspective with empathy allowing for the development of trust, rapport, and an open-minded environment.

Future Plans in Dentistry

Within the short-term future, my priorities would be to develop sound fundamentals within all aspects of general dentistry. Coupled with this I’d like to place an emphasis on further developing my communication skills through CPD workshops to become proficient in delivering and offering the best treatment available.

Under the close mentorship and guidance of an experienced practitioner, I’d like to become familiar and comfortable with a range of more complex procedures such as molar endodontics, wisdom teeth extractions, implantology and CAD-CAM dentistry.

Having been exposed to many facets of Dentistry, I find the diversity of General Dentistry extremely attractive. The ability to practice a wide range of clinical skills on different patient bases, never ceases to amaze me.

The holistic nature of General Dentistry is how I would like to practice Dentistry, as I would be in charge of the patient’s dental needs from start to finish.

Also, being able to review the long-term results of my treatment, establish rapport and build strong relationships with patients is something I look forward to.

Future Plans in Dentistry

During my first year out, I want to hone my clinical skills in the basics of treatment planning, diagnosis and Restorative Dentistry.

After having that foundation, I would want to continue to expand my knowledge base - especially in areas of Biomimetic Dentistry, Aesthetic Dentistry, Orthodontics, Implant Surgery and surgical extractions, with the help of an experienced mentor.

Throughout my career, I want to be known as a practitioner who is understanding, compassionate, professional and someone who prides themselves in their quality of work and care.

Personally I enjoy working in large teams with lots of discussion and evidence based learning. During dental school I enjoyed working in the student education branch of the AUDSS where we were able to create lectures, workshops and events to allow students to access further specialty education and content.

I enjoyed the encouraging learning environment that was creat-ed. No matter which dental specialty it is, I enjoy learning new techniques, being stimulated and having a challenge as I believe that the dental scope is too broad and ever changing to not keep evolving oneself. In clinic, the patient populations that I feel the most rewarded whilst treating include treating whole families, children and medically compromised patients.

Future Plans in Dentistry

My future plans in dentistry are to be an extremely competent practitioner with a wide scope of practice across all specialties, the type of dentist that can handle any patient that walks through the door!

I hope that the environment I am working in is vibrant and stimulating alongside a large set of colleagues and mentors who are also striving to be the best. Lastly, I hope to have warm long-term dentist-patient relationships and to never stop improving or learning no matter what I do.

Personal Interests

As I am a social and extroverted person, I enjoy lots of team sports and brunches. Throughout university I played netball and basketball with the university team and the dental student team. On a weekend morning you will find me at brunch with friends (sitting with an iced long black – extra shot) or on long walks in nature’s fresh air.

Education

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (2017-2021), Honours Degree of Bachelor of Science in Dentistry (2020-2021), International Dental and Oral Health Study Tour (2018), The University of Adelaide.

My underlying goal as a dental practitioner is to create a positive experience for my patients and I hope to play my part in breaking down the stigma surrounding a visit to the dentist. I am excited for this next stage and am ready to start a lifelong career of learning.

I wish to build on my skillset for emergency patient management, prosthodontics, endodontics and periodontics and am eager to develop new skills in aesthetic dentistry and digital dentistry. At this stage, oral surgery and special needs is of particular interest to me due to the combination of medicine and dentistry and the life-altering effect treatment can have.

Future Plans in Dentistry

As a graduate dentist, I hope to initially focus on learning and strengthening my technical and interpersonal skills in a supportive and fast-paced environment. I hope to gain more exposure to complex cases and have the opportunity for discussion with my colleagues and other health care practitioners to obtain the best outcome for my patients.

I also hope to stay up to date with the latest research and technology available on the market. Eventually, I would love the opportunity to be able to volunteer and am also interested in further education.

Personal Interests

Outside of dentistry I like to stay active through bouldering and running. When the sun is out, I enjoy sipping a cup of coffee at a local café and exploring nature through hikes.

On the weekends I love to gather a group of friends to visit the nearby wine regions and have also been endeavouring to read and paint more in the evenings! During my degree I have been involved in the student society and have gained lots of experience through my tenure as Vice President, and following graduation I hope to become an active member of the wider dental community.

Education:

Bachelor of Dental Surgery, University of Adelaide (2017-2021)

As a recent dental school graduate, I am passionate about developing a diverse skill set to be able to practice a broad range of general dentistry.

I strongly believe that it is essential not only to have good technical skills, but the commitment to providing compassionate care is equally important to establish an effective therapeutic relationship. I would like to first be confident with all aspects of general dentistry before expanding my skillset to aesthetic dentistry, surgical extractions, implantology, and CAD/CAM dentistry, learning from an experienced mentor.

Future Plans in Dentistry

For the first few years, I plan to invest an enormous amount of time into attending useful CPD courses to help me be confident in all aspects of general dentistry before broadening the scope of practice as mentioned above to become an all-rounded dentist.

As a recent graduate, I am also passionate about working with a group of experienced mentors or dentists to further increase my knowledge in the field.

Personal Interests

Outside of dentistry, I am very into badminton both socially and competitively thus I hope to climb the ranks to become a high-level player. Apart from that, I particularly enjoy catching up with friends over a cup of good coffee.

I often find myself venturing into nature for relaxation. Oh! And not to forget some video games with friends occasionally.

Bachelor of Dental Surgery, University of Adelaide

I am passionate in all aspects of general dentistry and enjoy the variety and broad scope it has to offer. A top priority is patient care and communication I believe this is important for building rapport to help them gain the best clinical outcome.

The most rewarding aspect of dentistry is seeing the positive impact it can make on an individual’s life and it is what drew me to dentistry from a young age.

Apart from General Dentistry, I am particularly interested in the fields of oral surgery, periodontics, orthodontics and implantology and hope to explore these areas more in future practices.

Future Plans in Dentistry

I am a huge advocate for life-long learning and as a new graduate, I wish to continue to expand my knowledge through professional development courses and hone my clinical skills in general dentistry in order to improve quality of life for patients.

I aim to be a well-rounded general practitioner and hope to consistently provide high standard of dental care under the guidance of a supportive mentor.

I would love to give back to the community by volunteering for dental outreach programs and servicing underserviced communities as my volunteering trip to Cambodia had highlighted the inequity and need for dental care in priority populations.

Personal Interests

I enjoy dance and exploring the outdoors such as hiking to scenic places to enjoy the surreal sights and beauty that Australia has to offer.

I also like reading and going on bike rides to the beach.
