4 Corners Activity! On the four corners of the room, there are various responses.

As a class, we will respond to 5 various statements. We will not use our words to respond. Instead, we will walk towards the corner of the room to show our individual responses. Answer honestly and from the heart! Let’s talk to our partners! Why did you choose this response? Let’s share aloud!

EMPATHY…the ability to mutually experience the

thoughts, emotions, and direct experience of others.

It goes beyond sympathy, which is a feeling of care and understanding for the suffering of

others. Both words have similar usage but differ in their emotional meaning.

Purpose!• We are looking at poetry and “putting

ourselves in someone else’s shoes.”• We want to analyze the poem by

annotating to create an understanding of what the poem is saying!

• We want to tie this poem back to empathy! How does it relate to our guiding questions?

• Highlight/Box unfamiliar words• Look at figurative language (Simile: “Your

open palms raised in the air/ like two white doves” Lines 1,2)

• Underline any questions the author is asking throughout the poem (“Eight? Seven?” Lines 6, 7)

• After each stanza, write one sentence on the right hand side of the poem, summarizing the stanza in your own words!
