Emotional Intimacy and the Sexual Relationship: an Emotionally Focused Perspective Saturday, 16 May 2014 Emotional intimacy - how does a felt sense of emotional connection and trust enrich a sexual relationship? We aim to show how an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy approach - rooted in attachment theory can help enrich our emotional and sexual relationships. For many of us there are difficulties that arise through an affair, low desire, internet addiction, infertility, illness and parenthood. These challenges cross the borders of age, ethnicity, gender, religion and sexual orientation. We will explore models of sexual responding which illustrate the links between physiology, emotion, thought, behaviour and context. This will provide a useful framework for conceptualising the sexual relationship and how it is ebbs and flows in response to life challenges through a psychosexual and EFCT lens. We will discuss how an Emotionally Focused approach - a systemic and attachment based model can assist with couple disconnect, avoidance and anxious pursuit of a partner in both emotional and sexual arenas. Turning towards a relationship (rather than away from it) in moments of vulnerability can facilitate growth and enhance the sexual relationship. Sue Johnson who developed EFCT describes how feeling safe and connected enables people to be playful and take risks in sexual interaction. A secure connection encourages people to be psychologically flexible and thus helps couples adapt with a hopeful heart to the range of changes that emerge through relationship. Drawing these strands of thought together we will create an emotionally focused map which we will demonstrate through teaching, video, exercises and by working with a small piece of personal or clinical material in experiential group session. To show how it is possible through empathy and authenticity to develop a richer expression of sensual and sexual experience - at whatever stage within a couple relationship, for our clients and for our selves. Angela Massucco is an Attachment based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist UKCP and trained at Bowlby Centre. She is an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist and holds an Adv Dip in Couples & Psychosexual Therapy and a Psychosexual Certificate with TCCR. She is also an Art Therapist BAAT.
