COURSE DESCRIPTIONOngoing advances in conventional microscopy, skull base endoscopy and recent developments in exoscopic techniques as well as robotic-assisted visualization have increased the enthusiasm for complex skull base techniques. Coupled with advanced pre-operative and intraoperative imaging capabilities our ability to tackle complex skull base pathologies continues to expand. Practicing neurosurgeons, ENT surgeons, and residents in training have incorporated some of these techniques in their surgical practice and have expressed an interest in these technical advances and their impact on operative technique and complication avoidance and management.
This three day course will be conducted by skull base ENT and neurosurgeons who will address the theoretical basis of traditional skull base microsurgical techniques, discuss advanced expanded endoscopic techniques, introduce the concept of robotic assisted exoscopic visualization and advanced neuro-imaging planning and navigation, and review case and technique selection as well as complication avoidance and management. Bioskills workshop sessions will be used to simulate procedures in a hands-on laboratory setting using preserved and injected cadaveric specimens.
Course attendees will have the benefit of expert colleagues providing lectures and videos illustrating the theoretical basis of the techniques presented, proctored dissections by the faculty and individual mentored dissections using state of the art technology. Additional instruction will be available for those attendees who would like to increase their understanding of white matter anatomy, MR-tractography, and DTI based neuronavigation and their use in port-based subcortical surgery. To allow the greatest educational experience, maximum enrollment in this course will be limited to 30 participants.
INTENDED AUDIENCEThis CME activity is for neurosurgeons, ENT surgeons, residents and fellows.
OBJECTIVESUpon completion of this continuing medical education activity, participants should be able to:
nDiscuss the anatomical basis of open and endoscopic skull base techniques, and describe basic principles of microscopic, endoscopic, and exoscopic technique selection.
n Increase technical proficiency in a cadaveric setting and describe complication avoidance principles in skull base surgery.
nDescribe advanced skull base reconstructive techniques and management strategies for neuro-vascular injuries in skull base approaches.
nUnderstand the role of pre-operative DTI planning and robotic assisted visualization in skull base approaches.
CME CREDITThe Emory University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 25 AMA PRA Category 1 credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
The Emory University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
TUITIONTuition for the course is $1,300. Tuition for residents, fellows, physician assistants, and nurses is $750. A maximum enrollment of 30 participants has been set so early registration is encouraged. Fees include use of dissection labs, course syllabus, refreshment breaks, dinner on Thursday evening and complimentary transportation to and from the hotel. Written cancellations received by March 6, 2017 will be refunded less an administrative fee of $100. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER MARCH 20, 2017.
