Emil Nava is a British music video director who has directed videos for many pop acts since the late noughties such as the Sugarbabes, Jessie J, Calvin Harris, Ed Sheeran, The Vamps, Tinie Tempah, Rita Ora and Paloma Faith.At school he was always into music and drama but it wasn’t until he was around 20 that he got into video directing.

Nava doesn’t really have one particular style that he follows every video. Some people use a fish-eye lens or only film in black and white, but Emil lets the artist have a heavy input into their video so hasn’t been able to credit himself a particular style yet.

However he does tend to use a wide shot a lot which gets the artist in and much of the background.

Intertexuality

Jessie J’s video for Nobody’s Perfect has reference to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

It references the ‘mad hatter’ scene at the long table as it depicts everyone dressed in similar outfits to the film.

Artists that have worked with him on videos say he is an energetic director that doesn’t just sit behind the screen and yell ‘cut’, he really gets involved behind the scene, keeping morale high and energy high on set.
