I am not a professional researcher; however, I have 20 years of experience working diligently with Colonial Pennsylvania records. My passion is piecing together early settlers, documenting their origin, settlement, and (if) subsequent migration. My primary area of focus is South Central Pennsylvania (viz., Franklin, Adams, York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster, and Berks counties).

I have not had opportunity to examine the original Lomersheim church books, which may identify other emigrants to the Middle Colonies. My work on the European side is rather primitive—relying primarily on abstracts available via familysearch.org. The actual church records should provide more information than abstracts placed online—including actual village of residence (some may have resided in satellite towns of Graben) and places of birth of the parents.

Using transcribed records available via familysearch.org databases as well as my own knowledge of Pennsylvania records, I have attempted to document below emigrants from Lomersheim on both sides of the Atlantic.

Lomersheim Emigrants to the Middle Colonies

The Adolph Gerber lists—published by Don Yoder in his compilation Pennsylvania German Immigrants, 1709-1786: Lists Consolidated from Yearbooks of The Pennsylvania German Folklore Society—includes documentation for Lomersheim emigrants either from the Ludwigsburg Protocol (or those who applied for permission to emigrate) or through the Lomersheim pastor looking for evidence of migration in the local church books.

I found evidence of other emigrants via analysis of passenger lists, American church records, and the work of other genealogists. It is quite likely that there are other Eighteenth Century emigrants.

The Federhaff Family

The family of Nicholas Federhaff & his wife Maria Catharina Fegart departed in two waves for America. After Nicholas’s death in 1733, his widow married Johannes Vollmer. In 1750, Johannes Vollmer, his wife, and stepson Balthasar Federhaff arrived at Philadelphia on the Ship Nancy. Three years later, Nicholas and Maria Catharina’s other two child Johann Georg Federhaff arrived at Philadelphia aboard the Ship Patience.

Balthasar and George Federhaff resided briefly in the vicinity of the Borough of Lancaster in Lancaster County before removing to modern-day Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

Note: An Abraham Federhaff, son of Catharine Federhaff, died 30 Aug 1735, aged 4 years, and was buried the following day. Did the transcriber err in regards to either Anna Maria or Abraham? Should this be the same child?—I find no baptism for an Abraham Federhaff, and the pastor always named the father.

Thedorus Friedrich Haux and his wife Anna Maria Federhaff

In the online church abstracts, Anna Maria’s father is identified as Jacob—however, more than a few descendants have placed her as the sister of Lomersheim emigrants Balthasar and Johann Georg Federhaff. The original church book should be consulted for verification.

The Haux family resided in Frederick County, Maryland. I have not pursued this family beyond a cursory search of online records.

The Johannes Vollmer Family

Johannes Vollmer was the stepfather of emigrants Balthasar Federhaff and Johann Georg Federhaff. They all resided briefly in the same vicinity in Lancaster County. Johannes died in 1759; however, I have not identified any estate records. Presumably his widow Catharina resided near her sons who lived in modern-day Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

I have not fully pursued Johannes Vollmer’s daughters.

Joseph Boger & his wife Susanna Jensel

Joseph Boger and Susanna Jensel married in 1747. Susanna’s father Friederich emigrated to the American Colonies in 1753. One year later Joseph & Susanna followed them. For a time, they all resided in the vicinity of Lancaster Borough in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Information posted by descendants online claim that Joseph migrated to Loudoun County, Virginia, where he died in 1783. However, this man is often identified as “Michael Joseph Boger.” I find no evidence of that name in German or Pennsylvania church records.

The Jensel Family

This surname evolved into Yensel, Jentzel, and other variants in Pennsylvania.

Four children of Friederich Jensel and his wife Susanna Eglauss emigrated to America: Johann Friederich, Johann Michael, Susanna (wife of Joseph Boger), and Anna Maria (wife of Michael Rieder). The Jensel family is a classic example of how German church records can prove relationships impossible to discern in American records.

Michael Rieder of Lancaster Borough and later Lebanon should not be confused with Michael Reider of Cocalico Township, Lancaster County. The latter emigrated from Teustchneureth in 1737.

I could not discern the fate of Michael’s sister Anna Maria, born in 1726. Anna Maria appears neither in Lomersheim marriage records nor burial records. It is possible that she joined her brother Michael on the voyage to America.

This emigrant is only known through the Adolph Gerber lists. I presume that the Elisabeth Wuestin from Lomersheim whose name appears in a 1772 Philadelphia is his daughter; however, I am not certain.

Anna Maria Scheible had three siblings who emigrated to America. They all settled in the vicinity of Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Perhaps the search for Jerg Wuest should begin there.

I have had difficulty documenting the arrival of these immigrant brothers—not to mention their residence after arrival. I would have expected them to arrive on one of the ships carrying Lomersheim emigrants—but so far I cannot identify them. It is possible that they arrived on a shop that docked at a port other than Philadelphia.

“JOHANN CASPAR HEPLER & SUSANNA SCHEIBLE in GERMANY Susanna Scheible, born December 18, 1718. Sponsors at her baptism: Hanns Jerg Boger and Agnes his wife, in place of Samuel Hecker, son of the miller; and Maria Barbara, daughter of Sebastian Schmid. Susanna Scheible was confirmed in the church at Lomersheim in 1733, and on February 5, 1743, married Caspar Heppler, citizen and tailor of Vaihingen , son of Caspar Heppler citizen and tailor of Vaihingen, son of CasparHeppler, citizen there and guild master of the tailor trade. Emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1748.

The wedding of Johann Caspar Heppler (Jr.) and Susanna Scheible took place in the ancient church at Lomersheim in 1743. It was duly recorded in the parish register of Vaihingen under the rubric "Nomina Neogramorum" (Name of the Newlyweds) as the wedding of a parishioner in the year 1743. In the entry the pastor describes the groom as "citizen and tailor of this place, legitimate son of Johann Caspar Heppler, citizen and tailor of Vaihingen". The bride was recorded as the "legitimate daughter of JacobScheible, citizen and supervisor of the ducal storehouse in Lomersheim". The banns for the coming wedding had been proclaimed in the church on the first, second and third Sundays after Epithany.

Johannes Schuster

According to the Adolph Gerber lists, Johannes Schuster—a 65-year-old Lomersheim man—applied for manumission in 1754. His daughter Barbara (perhaps his only surviving child) left for America with her husband Michael Jensel in 1750. His safe arrival at Philadelphia is notable in that few men of his advanced age undertook such an arduous journey.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find evidence of him in Pennsylvania records. Presumably he would have joined his daughter in Lancaster County.

The Sieger brothers are documented in the Adolph Gerber lists. Their families are easy to locate in Lomersheim records and each brother is easily identified on ship lists, arriving with other Lomersheim emigrants. However, documentation in Pennsylvania records is presently scant. The surname Sieger begins to appear with regularity in early Northampton County records. The search should begin there.

I have viewed the original: It certainly could be read as Brauer; however, in light of other evidence—particularly Lomersheim emigrants Michael Rieder and Michel Jensel flanking each side—I am confident that those now transcribing the name will surely read Berner as the immigrant’s true signature. (The letters e and n in German script are easily confused.)

Evangelical Lutheran Church; Germantown, Pa. Her sponsors were Andreas & Elisabeth Berendt.B. Jacob- born 7 December 1784. He was baptized on 24 March 1786, per the records of St.

Michael's E.L. Church. His sponsors were Johannes & Catharine Altemus. Jacob is not listed in the will of his maternal grandfather, Andrew Berner; assuming he died before January 1813.

C. Andrew- born 21 February 1791."Andreas" was baptized on 1 May 1791, per the records of St. Michael's E.L. Church. His sponsors were Andreas & Elizabeth Bernhard. Andrew died on 19 November 1828. He was married to Hannah Guylinger on 17 January 1819, per the records of the Germantown Reformed Church. Andrew & Hannah had at least 3 children.

D. Catharine- born 9 Febuary 1794. She was baptized on 23 March 1794, per the records of St. Michael's E.L. Church. Her sponsors were her parents, "Johannes and Catharine WENS". .

E. Margaretha- born 4 September 1796. She was baptized on 2 October 1796, per the records of St. Michael's E.L. Church. Her sponsors were her parents. .

F. Maria- born 15 July 1798 (aka- Mary). She was baptized on 19 August 1798, per the records of St. Michael's E.L. Church. Her sponsor was Andreas & Elizabeth Bernhard.

G. Johannes- born 24 December 1801. He was baptized on 25 December 1801, per the records of St. Michael's E.L. Church. His parents were the sponsors. .

H. Sara- born 1 April 1805. She was baptized on 21 July 1805, per the records of St. Michael's E.L. Church. Her parents were the sponsors. Sara.

Anna Maria Aichele

Anna Maria Aichele and her illegitimate child—according to the Adolph Gerber lists—departed for the new land. They may have traveled with the 1750 Lomersheim emigrants. I have not been able to locate evidence of Anna Maria and her child in American records. Further, I could not locate her in the online Lomersheim abstracts. Her inclusion in this file is based solely on the published Adolph Gerber lists.
