Brief history

The Electric and Musical Industries Ltd was formed in March 1931 by the merger of the UK Columbia Graphophone Company and the Gramophone Company, with its "His Master's Voice" record label, firms that have a history extending back to the origins of recorded sound. The new amalgamated company produced sound recordings as well as recording and playback equipment.

Main activities

EMI Music brings artists and fans together by driving action and creating value wherever music is experienced. Its record labels include Angel, Astralwerks, Blue Note, Capitol, Capitol Latin, Capitol Records Nashville, EMI Classics, EMI CMG, EMI Records, EMI Records Nashville, Manhattan, Parlophone, Virgin Classics and Virgin Records. EMI publishing provides songwriting and licensing the final product.

Albums in EMI Music’s catalogue include ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘Aladdin Sane’ (by David Bowie), ‘Revolver’ and ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band’ (by The Beatles) and ‘Songs For Swingin’ Lovers’ (Frank Sinatra). EMI also owns and runs the world-renowned recording studios Abbey Road in London and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

Company structure

The ultimate parent undertaking and controlling parent company is TFCP Holdings Limited. The immediate parent company is Maltby Holdings Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. Maltby Capital Limited is responsible for financial part.

Stephen Alexander is Chairman of Maltby Capital, having been appointed to the role in June 2010.

Roger Faxon is Group Chief Executive and Chairman and CEO of both EMI Music and EMI Music Publishing. He was appointed to his current role in June 2010.

EMI works with biggest global ads to small local campaigns, places it’s advertising on TV, uses Internet, radio, magazines, newspapers, mobiles and outdoor advertising.

Strengths-composing of the top selling artists, best songwriters, and extensive catalogues of recordings-EMI has also a wide range of musical genres-the company has significantly outperformed the industry

Weaknesses-Difficulties with the intellectual property- The substantial dependence on a limited number of online music stores-Illegal music downloads and file sharing also exist-EMI music industry is poor in retailing their products. There is a problem on low sales on the retailing of the products.
