The FY 10 SAB recommendations have been posted and include the following summer study topics:

Operating Next-Generation Unmanned Aircraft Systems for Irregular Warfare

The Future of Launch Vehicle Systems for the US Air ForceNext Generation Electronic WarfareTest Range Security

The group will redefine our recommendation for “Ultra-lightweight materials” for consideration for

FY 11 SAB.

CONTACT Program Annual Review Meeting

Partnership between U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and seven universities in Texas:

University of Texas at Arlington, Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, and Pan American

Rice University University of Houston

Focused on nanotechnology research and commercialization for aerospace and defense sectors. Meeting participants included program members, academia, government and industry.CONTACT Industrial Advisory Committee invites industry participants to be engaged in the program. Some of ETC M&S subcommittee members’ organizations have expressed interest in CONTACT. Bayer Materials presented a breakthrough st the annual review meeting.

Update on Watch List item - Bayer MaterialScience and Baytubes

Baytubes are multi-walled carbon nanotubes that reinforces materials such as aluminum, delivering lightweight high strength materials.Bayer MaterialScience will be considering manufacturing sites in the U.S. for the production of Baytubes®. ETC Subcommittee Members have received information on Bayer MaterialScience and Baytubes. We would like to gauge interest and demand for this product from any ETC organization.

Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Aluminum (Baytubes®): Multi-walled carbon nanotubes Purity up to 99% Mechanical strength five times that of steel with only ¼ the weight Electrical conductivity comparable to copper Heat conductivity comparable to diamond Products/applications include: bolts, connecting elements, conductive

plastics, sports equipment, plastic containers, flying camera, nano dispersions, and composite materials.

Possible applications: wind turbines, aircraft construction, automotive parts, batteries, computer chips, electrodes for fuel cells, catalysts, sensors and actuators, and high performance materials.

Industrial scale production (> 200 tons/year) with new production plants projected.

New Watch List item - Nanostitching:

A new technique incorporating nanotubes into carbon fiber composite materials has been invented at MIT.

Successfully addresses binding problems in composite matrices.

Delivers increased strength and high electrical conductivity, attractive to aerospace applications.

Ten times the strength and one million times the electrical conductivity of materials without nanotubes.

Provides protection against lightening strikes.
