FOR MANY PEOPLE, THE ARRIVAL OF SPRING feels like the beginningof a new year, even more than January 1. It just seems like the natural time forrenewal, new resolutions and new perspectives.
This spring, Adventist Health Glendale Foundation is poised and ready for this fresh start. Our medical center continues to lead the way in patient satisfaction, medical outcomes and advancing technical skills and equipment. Its success is due inlarge part to the incredible support received by our community. Its future is likewiseaffected. That’s why the Foundation is renewing our commitment and focus on donorand volunteer appreciation. This year, not only are we are updating our donor walls, we are beginning
production of a beautiful, new donor wall. Our volunteer appreciation event is beingexpanded to include more people and more activities. We plan to provide you withmore stories and opportunities to learn and see how your contributions are having a positive impact on improving your community hospital. I hope that you will participate in our outreach efforts to fulfill our intended
purpose: to thank you, to recognize you as a good friend of Adventist Health Glendale and share the stories of the many lives you’ve touched.
AS I BEGIN MY SECOND YEAR AS BOARD CHAIR for Adventist HealthGlendale Foundation, I am filled with gratitude for the generous support we have received from our many friends and colleagues in the greater Glendale community.
With the installation of the new linear accelerator, the first phase of the CancerCenter renovation project is complete. Thanks to you and donors across our community, cancer patients are now receiving the most technologically advanced radiation therapyavailable, here on our campus, close to home. The second and final phase of the project is underway, and by this fall we are looking to have the finest patient-centered cancertreatment facility in Glendale. This pioneering project is both exciting and rewarding, but it’s also a challenge.
Our continuing work to fully fund the renovation is not yet done. So I ask you to join campaign co-chairs Fran Buchanan, Dr. Harlan Gibbs and Helen McDonagh, in addition to my colleagues on the Foundation Board and me, as together we enter thehome stretch in fully financing this lasting gift to Glendale and to all those it will serve. We will offer naming opportunities within the Cancer Center, creating a lasting
legacy for donors and honorees alike. We are equally excited to introduce a new Quilt of Honor in which donors may purchase squares and create a personal message. See page 7 for further details. Your gift of any amount is deeply appreciated — and the lasting contribution
and good feeling you will receive through your involvement in our medical center’s continuing fight against cancer, are priceless!

Excitement and challenges
Poised and ready
is the theme of Gala 2018, presented by Adventist HealthGlendale Foundation, on Sundayevening, April 29. And whatdreamier way than enjoying anevening among friends at Los Angeles’ newest must-visit land-mark hotels, the InterContinentalLos Angeles Downtown, tallestand most lavish skyscraper west of Chicago.
“It’s going to be a wow! experienceguests will long remember,” says Founda-tion President Irene Bourdon. On the evening’s program, Gala 2018
will feature the Foundation’s first LifetimeLegacy Award, presented to Sam and GraceCarvajal for their years of extraordinaryphilanthropic leadership. Scott Reiner, president and CEO of Adventist HealthWest, will be on hand to present this most coveted of Foundation awards. Neurologist Lance J. Lee, M.D., will
be officially proclaimed the Foundation’s2018 Physician Hero, an honor based ontributes received from grateful patients. Violinist Jaime Jorge and tenor Carlo
De Antonis will headline the evening’s entertainment. The versatile violin soloisthas performed in more than 2,500 concertsthroughout the world. De Antonis, recently featured on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, has sung in many of the greatopera houses in Europe and made his U.S. debut with the L.A. Philharmonic. Guests also will have the opportunity
in a live auction to bid on VIP tickets tosee a big-name entertainer, accompaniedby a meet and greet, two tickets to any destination on a Viking Cruise, an

Bourdon adds, “guests who select a VIPticket will be whisked to the hotel’s rooftoplounge for an unforgettable pre-Gala reception, with spectacular 360-degreeviews of the cityscape and miles around.”
FUND-A-NEED: SUPERIOR 3D MAMMOGRAPHY
A highly anticipated event during theevening is the Foundation’s annual fund-a-need. This year guests will be invited to donate toward a new 3D mammographysystem called digital breast tomosynthesis, which has revolutionized screening forearly detection of breast cancer. 3D mammography is proven to
increase the detection of invasive cancer by more than 40 percent! “Just imagine if our doctors were able
to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage —women’s lives can be saved,” Bourdonsmiles. “What a gift to the community!” Contributions to this importantequipment will give the gift of life to thewomen of today, their families and lovedones, and to the future of our girls.

Dr. Lee as the 2018 Physician Hero andwill present his award at Gala 2018 onSunday, April 29, at the InterContinentalLos Angeles Downtown. When informed of the award, Dr. Lee
said the honor is, indeed, very special because he was selected by his patients.
“I am grateful for my patients and thetrust and confidence they have shown inme as their doctor,” Dr. Lee added. Often seen at the hospital carrying a
doctor’s “little black bag,” a reminder ofages past, Dr. Lee is by no means old-fashioned in the field of neurology. In fact, his leadership in advancing the level ofstroke care helped elevate Adventist Health Glendale to becoming the first communityhospital in L.A. MORE THAN 60,000 patient visitswere logged in Adventist HealthGlendale’s Emergency Depart-
ment during the past year. The departmentfunctions 24/7 and is equipped to meetpatients’ medical needs ranging from scrapesand flu bugs to strokes and heart attacks. To provide this vital service, the medical center currently contracts with theGlendale Adventist Emergency Physicians,a group of board-certified doctors who spe-cialize in the practice of emergency medi-cine. The physicians are complemented bya specialized team of ER-experienced alliedhealth professionals, including physician
assistants, nurse practitioners, registerednurses and technicians. Among area hospitals, AdventistHealth Glendale not only stands as a bea-con for high-performing, high-functioningemergency medicine, but also for thelength of service — upwards of 20 to 30years — by several of its physicians.

Many of the physicians who make up our group have been here in the EmergencyDepartment for a long time and are entrenched in the Glendale community. Adventist Health Glendale is the primary place where many of us in the groupwork to provide emergency patient care. We are very thankful to the hospital, and what better way to give back to thehospital, because of our gratitude and to the Foundation, than to help build otherprograms that are reliant upon donations and support. We like to provide resources that are outside the medical center’s regular operations to help fund the hospital’s different needs. We are committed to thishospital, every one of us. This is what makes a great emergency department.

I LOVED EVERY ROTATION when I went tomedical school. As an intern, my first rota-tion was Emergency Medicine in Oakland, working until 4 a.m. in a tough neighbor-hood. It too was a little bit of everything, and I found my calling. Later, I came toGlendale Adventist because it had the reputation of providing excellent care withdiverse cases in the emergency department. What satisfies me most about emer-
gency medicine? Rapid intervention. Wefigure out what the problem is and thendecide what’s going to happen next. Wehave limited time for our interface with patients, and therefore must maximize thattime. But it’s more than scripted yes or noquestions: we have to know our patient’sstory. Sometimes I’ll pull up a stool, askthem how they’re doing, and then askthem to tell me more. Hopefully we figureit out together. Over 30 years emergency medicine hasmorphed into an extension of almost everysingle hospital specialty. We are neurology— the first face of stroke. We are the firstface of cardiology when you come with amyocardial infarction. From the momentyou are seen you are receiving medical specialty crafted care. I am fortunate to be in a position that
affords me to be of a high level of service to others. God has also provided me thistremendous community of like-mindedproviders and there is no better privilegethan to do this job together with my peers.I am very blessed. a
STAT Call! Stroke alert, incoming…A stroke patient is on the way. Time is brain cells lost, not a moment to spare. In the Emergency Department at Adventist Health Glendale, physicians, nurses and technicians are alerted and prepared — ready to save a life — all hours of the day or night. During their 10-hour shift, ER physicians routinely encounter
an extraordinary variety of cases. It goes with the territory. The stroke patient arrives by Glendale Fire ambulance, is seen immediately by anemergency physician, with consultation by the neurologist on-call, andintervention is initiated. A few minutes later an athlete is treated for abroken wrist. Just a little later, an anxious wife brings in her husbandwho’s having tightness in his chest. The parade of patients continues into the night.
I JOINED THE HOSPITAL in 1987, and I’veworked with many of the same outstandingemergency doctors for the past 20 years. We are privileged to have a core group
of physicians, also including Dr. EvelynWong and Dr. David Friend, who havebeen with us for many years. Longevity like this is nearly unheard of in our spe-cialty, because burnout among emergencymedicine physicians is a huge problem. The greatest thing about our profes-
sion is that we never know what’s coming
In their own words…
Ask any ER doctor about the challenges of working in a busy emergency department, and they’ll likely tell you it’s the best job at Adventist Health Glendale! We wanted to learn more, so The Difference recently sat down for an informal Q&A with fourGlendale Adventist Emergency Physicians. Harlan Gibbs, M.D., Cheryl Lee Jang,M.D., Brian Stanford, M.D., and Peter Utas, M.D., are board-certified in emergency medicine and, collectively, have devoted more than a century of their lives to caring for the people of this community in times of medical emergencies.
through the door — a newborn, a 100-year-old person, it’s constantly changing. It’s soup to nuts, a little bit of everything. My favorite saying in life, “It’s a
marathon, not a sprint,” means that wetry to keep humane hours, not overwork, stay ahead of the curve in doctor and allied health professional staffing, so people are at their best on every shift. We value our physician assistants,
nurse practitioners and support people. (continued on next page)

THIRTY YEARS AGO it was much quieterin the ER. Lab tests and x-ray capabilitieswere not as sophisticated. Today, we areable to initiate interventional cardiologyand neurology and go after heart attacksand strokes before permanent damage is done. If we can treat the patient soonenough, we can start treatments that willgreatly improve their situation and qualityof life. I treat patients the way I would like to be treated. I was once a patient in anED after an accident. It was an eye-open-ing experience to be on the other side ofthe gurney, and I think it changed the wayI practice medicine. It has made me moreempathetic as I try to see things from thepatient’s point of view.
(continued from page 9) Allied health professionals give us tremen-dous support, eyes and ears, they run oururgent care side. We can’t survive in emergency medicine without them. Nursing leadership is incredibly importanthere; we have great nursing with a vision. Our department is transitioning to
a younger core of amazing doctors who represent the best and brightest of Glendale. This is the future of health carefor our city and its emergency services. Where else is there a relationship like
this? I would argue, nowhere! a
As we treat increasing numbers of life-changing illnesses, we must keep our focuson the patient and their families. I believewe do a very good job connecting with thepatient and their support group, helpingthem navigate what is an uncomfortableand frightening situation. Remembering the Northridge earth-quake in 1994, I was the only doctor onduty at 4:30 that morning. As patientsstarted filling up our department, I wasimpressed to see other doctors showing up to help out — my fellow ER Docs, surgeons, internal medicine and doctorsfrom around the hospital. Then and now, I am grateful to work with a group of greatphysicians who really care deeply for theirhospital and community. a

WHEN I SEE A PATIENT, my goal, obviously,is to figure out exactly what’s going on.That’s the attraction, the puzzle, tryingto get to the right answer, which is whythis whole thing still interests me. Oncein awhile there are interesting twists andturns. You might think that by now I’veseen everything, but there are still left-fieldthings that come up. So, when I see patients, I really try
to focus on directing the conversation in a way that gives the information I need. With some patients it can be interesting.I’ll ask a question, and they may respondwith something that seems irrelevant.I listen to the details, even if they seem irrelevant; perhaps they are important.
Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree, and they’re coming with the right stuff. So it’s critical to listen to the details, thelittle things that patients say. These oftenmake the difference in making the correctdiagnosis. So many things are different now.
When I started here in 1982, x-rays wereon film, CT scans were new and slow, ultrasound was rudimentary — so muchimproved now and useful for many things. What hasn’t changed are the basic
questions: What is the chief complaint?Pain? If so, character, location, onset, timecourse, what makes it better, what makes it worse, and so on — always putting together the pieces of the puzzle. a

Welcome, CFO Eric Krueger
In December 2017, the “Tax Cuts andJobs Act” was signed into law. This legislation reflects the largest major tax reform in over 30 years. There are a few provisions
in the new tax law that impactcharitable giving and estateplanning — and may be of particular interest to donorsand friends of Adventist HealthGlendale Foundation.
Charitable giving and philanthropy have always been important American values. They are responsible for helping tobuild schools, hospitals, social services, andsustaining vital social and human servicesthat improve the quality of life for peoplein our communities. These tax law changescould impact your decisions as a taxpayerand donor. One example is the increase in the
standard deduction from $6,500 to$12,000 for single individuals ($13,000to $24,000 for married couples) andlimitations on certain itemized deductions.
In general, there will be limits on state andlocal (including property) tax deductions, interest deductions on mortgage and home equity debt, and other miscellaneous
itemized deductions such as investment fees or unreimbursedbusiness expenses.
For many people, the state/local tax and interest deductionscomprise a majority of their item-ized deductions. With limits onthese deductions going forward, the itemized deductions for manypeople may be less than the new
standard deduction. This leaves the charita-ble deduction as one of the few remainingtax planning tools with respect to itemizeddeductions. People who use the standard deduc-
tion will not derive any tax benefit fromtheir donations. Alternatively, those whomake charitable donations may derive more tax benefits if they plan the amountand timing of their donations. The second example relates to estates
and gifts. For estates of decedents dying
health care systems, independent hospitalsand academic medical centers in Chicagoand Portland, OR, prior to coming toGlendale. “Adventist Health Glendale and the
Foundation are an integral part of theGlendale community, and I’m confidentthese institutions will continue to do greatthings for many years to come,” he assures.
“I am privileged to work with wonderfulpeople who are committed to fulfilling ourmission that guides how we care for ourpatients as well as manage all facets of thehospital.” Krueger cites one of the challenges fac-
ing the hospital and foundation in thecoming years is keeping pace with the latesttechnology needs for patient care. “Acquiring new equipment such as the
linear accelerator now treating patients inthe Cancer Center is expensive. The hospi-tal cannot bear these costs alone,” he says.“The Foundation, through the generosityof its donors, is doing a great service to thecommunity by helping support these proj-ects so Adventist Health Glendale will con-tinue to offer our physicians and patientsthe latest, most effective treatment optionsas technology changes at a rapid rate.”
after December 31, 2017, the base estateand gift tax exemption amount increasesfrom $5 million to $10 million (indexedfor inflation). Charitable gifting has historically beenan essential strategy in reducing estatetaxes on the death of the donor. Charitable gifting will continue to be an importantplanning tool for people with taxable estates in 2018 and beyond. While the tax law has changed, one fact remains the same. Studies haveconcluded that tax deductibility of donations is not the primary reason people give to charitable causes. Belief in the mission and the desire to help others and make a difference remain the primary reasons people donate. Prior to making any significant chari-table gifts, I recommend consulting witha tax professional to discuss your particularcircumstances and philanthropy goals.

they are given the bear,” reflected a nurse,“but they’re happy tears.” This past Christmas was the fourth
year of Project Hug-a-Bear, when about 60patients in nursing units throughout thehospital each were given a Bloomie’s Teddy
