Explore the process of identifying hazards, assessing risks, analyzing vulnerabilities and assessing impacts of disasters on communities. Learn sustainable hazard mitigation and related prioritization as well as the general management of hazards, risks and vulnerabilities.
EM139 – Developing Emergency Management Plans
Prerequisite: EM110
Learn a step by step approach to developing an emergency plan for your organization. Acquire valuable tools and templates to assist you in creating and modifying your emergency plan.
EOC120 – Emergency Operations Centre EssentialsLearn the fundamentals of how Emergency Operations Centres operate in supporting the needs of response departments and agencies during emergencies and disasters. Explore the key aspects of site support operations within an Incident Command System management structure.
EM170 – Introduction to Business Continuity Management Explore the purpose and benefits of business continuity management including the steps involved in developing a business continuity plan. In addition, learn the importance of communicating and exercising a business continuity plan.
EM150 – Introduction to Emergency Management Exercise DesignExplore the basics of emergency management exercise design and learn how the field of exercise design has changed in recent years to become a key component of emergency preparedness. Reveiw the concepts of a formal multi-year exercise program, the exercise program management team, the five-phase exercise design model and the exercise design team.
EM186 – Information OfficerPrerequisite: CMD110
Recommended: CMD120 or EOC120
Acquire the skills and knowledge required of an Information Officer working at an emergency site or at a site support facility. Learn how to write key messages and media releases; communicate effectively with the public, media, and internal stakeholders; and utilize a variety of communication media.
EM730 – Emergency EvacuationsPrerequisite: EM110 and (EOC110 or EOC120)
Explore how fires, floods or other emergencies may require evacuating areas of your community. Learn how to organize an evacuation, map and sector your community, prepare public information messages, consider transportation issues and determine re-entry procedures.
EM141 – Disasters and TraumaPrerequisite: EM110
Explore the range of responses and reactions to stress following a traumatic incident. Trauma interventions following a major tragedy such as an airplane crash or earthquake require a coordinated intervention that goes well beyond the provision of group debriefings.
EM931 – Developing Personal Preparedness ProgramsPrerequisite: EM110
Learn how to effectively market your emergency management program to the public and/or employees. Explore delivery methods such as presentations, printed materials, electronic communication and websites. Note: This is not a personal preparedness course.
EM132 – Planning for Community Disaster RecoveryPrerequisite: EM110
Learn about the potential community impacts of disasters and the primary components involved in community disaster recovery. The purpose and role of a community recovery organization are explored and learners are introduced to a process for the development of an effective plan for community disaster recovery.
EM195 – Emergency Management Final AssessmentPrerequisites: All required and elective course credits.
In this last component of the Emergency Management Certificate, apply the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program in a take-home project.
