  • Presidents MessageIt appears that our long awaited summer has finally arrived, and seems to be staying for a while. Its a beautiful time of year at the park, with flowers blooming and a variety of berries ripening. The huckleberries are excellent this year, and it appears we will have a good crop of blackberries as well.

Francina and I enjoyed our trip to Klamath Falls, OR for the Great Northern convention; it was hot and sunny the entire week. We also had a nice visit to Squamish for the 100 th Anniversary of the PGE at the WCRA. Both events were very well organized and were over far too soon.

By all reports the Summer Train Meet on July 7-8 was a success, with several visitors from the Triennial Trek at the park. A special thanks to everyone who helped out and made our guests feel welcome, including Linda Cavaghan and Gaye Fransen who looked after buying the breakfast groceries on short notice and made sure everyone got fed. Also a big thank you to Ken Klakowich who played host to our visitors from down under.

The TraiNgang held their annual family barbecue at the park on Saturday evening, July 21st. This event is always popular, and this year was no exception with over 50 people in attendance. Gerry Wittenberg was kept busy on the Hudson providing train rides for everyone. Thanks to all the BCSME members who attended and helped make the evening a success.

Congratulations to our friends at the Vancouver Island Model Engineers (VIME), who celebrate their 40 th Anniversary on the weekend of August 17-18. Im sure we all wish them continued success for at least another 40 years.

A reminder to all our members that we need volunteers each weekend to help operate the park and run our trains. If you live in the lower mainland we need your assistance. It doesnt matter if you arent able to run trains, there will always be something you can do to help out, even if its just for a few hours.

I challenge every BCSME member living in the lower mainland who has not attended a meeting yet this year to so so, and lets see if we can set an attendance record in the process.

One Sunny July Afternoon... ...some members came out to the track to enjoy the sunshine, the fellowship of other hobbyists, run and test their locomotives.

It was also a good day for some to Below: Wittenberg & Bill Mckenzie do some training on steam locos in steaming up Bill's 3 truck Shay a low stress environment, with no prior to its first run of the year. passengers to carry or schedules to keep.

A big thank you to both Rob Burgess & Gerry Wittenberg for bringing this idea to fruition. It was a really great day! Let's do it again soon.

  • Pulling Power From the Land Down Under! Loco Y121 was built by Andrew Mierisch of the Diamond Valley Railway in Melbourne. It is modelled after the Victorian Railways Y class diesel electric locos.

This gas-electric engine is 2 (approx.) scale & is powered by a Nissan A12 4 cylinder motor that runs a 200 amp aircraft generator, that in turns powers two fork lift motors, one on each truck, chain drives to each axle. The Y121 is fully multi-unit

capable. At Diamond Valley Railway they connect 4 locos together and control them from the lead loco!

The XPT was built by Peter Laws of the Brisbane Bayside Live Steamers. XPT is a short form for Express Passenger Train. This loco is modelled after the XPT diesel electrics owned by County- Link which operates inter-city rail service in New South Wales.

The XPT's scale is 17 times that of HO. Peter used the HO model drawings done by a fellow Australian by the name of Chapman whose known for his precision in modelling, and has adjusted the scale upwards accordingly.

This loco is powered by a Kubota 13 HP 3 cylinder 650cc diesel engine, connected to a Suzuki

Hatch automatic transmission, which in turn is connected to each truck by drive shafts Each truck is fitted with a gear box which is connected to the axles by chain drives.

A unique feature of this loco is that there is a switch in the cab for engaging first gear which, when thrown, keeps the loco at a very low speed of about a mile an hour: it not only allows the train to begin pulling away quite smoothly when under load, but it also allows the club to put a child in the cab and let him/her drive the loco, under supervision, in a highly controlled and safe manner. It has been a big hit with the club's riders!

4904 is another loco built by Peter Laws. Like the XPT it is 17 times HO scale. This particular loco is modelled after the New South Wales 49 class diesel electrics, and is painted in the Southern Shorthaul Railway livery.

This loco was built in 2011, and is powered by a Kubota 10 HP 600cc 3 cylinder diesel engine. It's equipped with a Suzuki Hatch automatic transmission which in turn is drives a Datsun 180B differential which is mounted on the rear truck. The differential then chain drives the truck's centre axle, and it in turn chain drives the other two axles on the truck.

Peter modified the transmission by connecting the drive shaft to a gear, not normally used for this purpose, that moves in a direction opposite to that of travel: he then turned the differential upside down to counter this. According to Peter, this type of drive configuration is on at least 12 locos in Australia, and works quite well! Peter also modified the differential by welding up the sun gears inside and attach two chains to the centre axle of the truck. This allows for safety. The rear cover had to be removed and turned 180 to allow the breather to be right side up. The little web inside the differential has to be cut out as well.

The loco's brake is a disc brake mounted on the gear box. In addition, Peter puts hand brakes on all his locos as a redundant system. Photos: courtesy Frank Fleury

  • A Work In Progress Last month BCSME member Ernie Beskowiney brought his newest project to the to the Summer Train Meet for us all to admire. It is a model of Canadian National's loco 6060 which is a 4-8-2 Mountain class engine. This loco, and others of its class, with its unique semi- streamlined shaped smoke box cover was nicknamed Bullet Nose Betty

Locomotive 6060 is still in use. It is now called the Spirit of Alberta and carries passengers on a tourist excursion railway departing from the town of Stettler.

Hopefully Ernie can be persuaded to keep us updated on the progress of this project...it is a real beauty!

Rail Polishing! Many visitors often ask what all that steel is that's built on top of those cement piers. It's a very natural question to ask since most have never seen anything happening there! So it was nice to see the raised track gang out running a couple of their locos during the Summer Train Meet. Richard Seebacher fired up his 3 Britannia loco, with some help from life member Joe Carroll, while Joe took the Society's 5 Hercules loco for a run along the rails. Now, folks, you know what all that steel is for!

All the Way From Tennessee We had the pleasure of hosting Lutz Braun and his wife Pamela, who did a big circle tour of several southern US tracks, including Maricopa and Train Mountain, before deciding to come north of the 49th and pay us a visit. Lutz is a member of The Mid-South Live Steamers, which has its track at Columbia about 56 km south of Nashville.

He brought with him his 10 Wheeler. George Towne built the loco and sold it to Lutz about 12 years ago. The boiler is made of 3 gauge steel. Thanks Lutz for stopping in! Photo: courtesy of Joe Holman
