Embroidered Oven MittsWhether it's a loaf of bread, aThanksgiving turkey, a birthdaycake, or a rack of ribs on thegrill, oven mitts are a must forany baker, chef, or griller.
Create beautifully embroideredoven mitts to match any kitchendecor with this simple pattern.Make a set for yourself, and giveas a gift to those on your "nice"list.
Note: It is important to use100% cotton fabric whenmaking oven mitts, becausecotton can withstand heat.Synthetic fabrics, likepolyester, may melt whenexposed to high heat.
Lay the quilted fabric rightside up with the right mitt sideof the pattern on top. Whenmarking on all of the fabrics inthis project, pin the pattern inplace, so it will not shift.
Trace the pattern. We used awhite-colored pencil fortracing because we chose adark fabric.
Flip the pattern to the left mittside, and trace the shape onthe fabric again.
Next, print full-size templatesof the designs, usingembroidery software. To makethe designs easier to workwith, trim some of the excesspaper from around them.
We are planning to embroidera design in the exact center ofthe mitts.
To find the center, measurethe height and divide by two.
connecting the marks you justmade. These lines will be usedfor hooping and positioning thesecond design.
We are positioning the seconddesign one inch below thecenter design. Poke a hole in thecenter of the second designtemplate, align it on the existingvertical axis line, and mark thecenter.
Add long pieces of tape underthe horizontal axis lines on thetemplate.
Remove the template, anddraw the horizontal axis lineon the tape by connecting thepoints.
We are embroidering thesame designs in the sameplace on the left mitt. Use thetemplates to mark the left-hand mitt by repeating thesteps for design placement.
We'll start embroidering withthe center design of the right-
Spray one piece of cut-awaystabilizer with adhesive, andhoop the stabilizer with thefabric.
Align the lines on the maskingtape with the marks on thehoop.
Attach the hoop to themachine, load the design, andalign the needle directly overthe center point. Then, peel themasking tape back, andembroider the design.
When the first design hasfinished sewing, remove it fromthe machine and unhoop thefabric. Hoop the second design(with cut-away stabilizer as youdid with the first design) by aligning the lines on thetape with the alignment markson the hoop.
You may find that theembroidery you just stitchedout is pressed in the hoop, butthat is okay -- it won't distortthe stitches.
We are using a quilted ironingboard fabric for the palm sideof the mitts. The outer shell ofthis fabric is made of 100%cotton, with an aluminizedsilver coating. The innerbatting is 100% cotton as well.
Lay the quilted ironing boardfabric wrong side up, and tracethe right mitt side of thepattern.
Mark the left mitt side as well.
Cut out the shapes.
Trace the right and left mittpatterns on the insulatedlining, and cut out the shapes.
Lay the embroidered fabric, wrong side up, on top of thethermal fabric.
Finally, lay the insulated liningon top of the embroideredfabric, and pin the layerstogether.
Sew the layers together using azigzag stitch. Sew in about 1/8inch from the edge to ensurethat all the layers get sewntogether. Stitch around the mitt, excluding the bottom edge --which will be the hand opening.
Add the loop in the tape to thelower seam on the mitt. Wrapthe tape around the bottomedges and pin into place.
Sew the tape in place bysewing along the inner edge ofthe tape. Sew all around theedge of the opening. Whenyou reach the point where youstarted the tape, cut the tapeso that the end overlaps about1/4 inch, and finish stitching.
And there you have it! Abeautiful and functionaladdition to your kitchen anddecor.
