The world is rapidly moving to large-scale deployment of real-time cyber-physical systems
made up of theInternet of Things (IoT) and embedded devices supported by mobile and
traditional computers. Cyber-physical systems merge software, hardware, and operations to
interact with the real physical world. These systems require specialized support test
environments driven by traditional, model and keyword testing with automation. The reasons
that testing needs models and keywords in these test environments include: limited human user
interface(s) to support testing, short performance time cycles, unique hardware interfaces,
sophisticated communications, short lifecycles, system-of-systems integration, and numerous
functional or non-functional requirements for example performance, security, reliability and
user interfaces. The class is based on: Jon Hagar’s books Software Test Attacks to Break
Mobile and Embedded Devices, IoT Development and Testing (eBook at leanpub.com) and his
contributions to many ISO and OMG standards.
DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for project managers, test leads, development staff needing verification
skills, and all levels of testers.

To some extent, all testing is based on models. Historical testing concepts such as functional
(aka black-box), quality, and structural (white-box) testing take a modelled view of the item
under test. Traditional testing concepts continue to be applicable for IoT/embedded, but
increasingly teams need other advanced concepts such as model-driven automation, math-
based, and keyword testing. Software IoT/embedded testing needs to include yet go beyond
traditional approaches of assessing individual device software elements to include testing the
hardware, networks, cloud, other software elements, and mobile apps. Further, an essential
feature of an IoT/embedded test program is the environment in which systems are used.
This tutorial includes examining an example IoT/embedded test environment including how
models driven by keywords can be used to provide simulation and stimulation for the software
under test. The tutorial includes exercises to help attendees understand model-based testing
and related concepts.
DETAILS
Teams will understand modelling and test related languages (keywords) and concepts to
control test efforts, environments and automation. Testers learn the use keywords to drive
simulations and stimulation tests in labs. IoT/embedded testers understand using models to
construct and represent actions such as:
• Test set-up conditions.• Data conditions at the start of the test to drive traditional test techniques.• Time-based test conditions.• Conditions to introduce faults into the hardware and/or software.• Actions for the models and/or simulations to take in support of closed loop, real-time and/or complex test system actions.• Test lab model and simulation control.• Test end condition checks.• Test report and recording considerations.
BENEFITS
TAKEAWAYS
• 1 copy-of Jon Hagar’s hard copy book (Software Test Attacks to Break Mobile and Embedded Devices) to the winning team each day of class
• 1 electronic copy of my 5-part eBook on “IoT Dev and testing” to each attendee.
