Automatic Test Equipment
A laser labeler requires not only laser technology, but also mechanical, electrical, computer science and many other technologies. Fortunately, nowadays those technologies are ever more mature and affordable and can be implemented in field applications.
In the automatic test equipment (ATE) market, systems are designed to reduce the time needed to verify that a particular device works, or to quickly find any faults before a part has a chance to end up in a consumer product. For this project, the customer manufactures test equipment for high density storage products. Advantech provided COM products and Design-in Service to enable a large number of drives including SSD, HDD, PCIe, and hybrid devices to be tested in parallel at their highest bandwidth speeds, throughout all the stages of their production process.
Like other computer numerical control systems (CNCs), a laser labeling machine relies on CAD and CAM to analyze models, and then transfers the information into movement instructions for processing. The labeler requires sufficient performance for calculations, and dual Ethernet, with EtherCAT capability, for communication with motion cards. Our customers with extensive experience in industry was looking for an embedded PC designed with reliability, wide temperature support and vibration challenges, as well as a compact design that could easily fit in a very limited space.
The customer wanted a compact product design that could fit in a space based on a 10 x 20 cm carrier board. It needed to have server-grade industrial requirements and be able to support simultaneous tests for over 500 units of equipment with the use of 24-channel PCIe Gen3 expansion. Low power consumption with high computing performance was needed with excellent heat dissipation in a compact mechanical design.
The customer chose the Advantech EPC-S101, a compact system based on 3.5” SBC PCM-9310, an Intel® N3000 series platform that provides up to a quad-core processor with only 6W power consumption. Such low heat dissipation and a fanless system design provide excellent reliability for critical field operations. Two side-bracket I/Os give lots flexibility, including 6 USB3.0/2.0 ports, VGA and HDMI, 4 COM ports with 15KV isolation, DIO, audio, etc. EPC-S101 also can support internal connector features including LVDS/eDP, SMBus. Advantech also provides a built-in OS of the customer’s choice-Windows or Linux—in addition to software APIs and utilities that help customers quickly implement their own applications.
Advantech’s SOM-5992 COM Express Basic Module met the customer’s demand for a compact design with flexible options. SOM-5992 with Intel Xeon processor can cover thousands of data exchange demands. SOM-5992 provides 32-ch PCIe expansion allowing for a 6 x PCIe x4 Gen3 configuration in support of a high density test system. It has limited power consumption with a TDP of 45W and has a highly efficient thermal solution to solve heat dissipation easily.

At automated production plants, the human–machine interface (HMI) of a computer numerical control (CNC) router serves as an interface between the operating system and human operator.
3D printers, with its best-known rapid plastic parts molding feature, meets the exact needs for diverse, small-quantity plastic models, and thus gradually replaces traditional high-cost, big-volume molding process. The technology has been eagerly deployed in industries such as automotive, aerospace, industrial design, construction and more.
CNC routers were required to operate continuously, the customer needed a reliable motherboard with low power consumption for closely monitoring production and responding to changes in production demands. Furthermore, the customer required an API to act as a hardware–software bridge so that the system status could be monitored remotely and system data (e.g., CPU temperature, fan speed) could be collected for failure prediction and analysis
Our client has the algorithms and material engineering techniques in 3D printing. By introducing human-machine interfaces with Advantech's Arm-based boards inside, the client successfully added value to their products. The HMI not only enabled supervision over the 3D printing process, but also allowed subtle mechanical movement control and accurate part selection through key Interface connections, ultimately achieved stable operations.
Advantech AIMB-215 was selected as the HMI solution. AIMB-215 is an industrial-grade motherboard that offers low power consumption but high performance, and it supports dual independent displays for dual-channel 24-bit LVDS, VGA, and DisplayPort 1.2. It has two onboard Mini-PCIe sockets and offers flexibility for users to implement mSATA for data storage or Wi-Fi, 3G, LTE solutions for data acquisition or transfer to the cloud.
Advantech RSB-4411, off-the-shelf single board based on Arm Cortex-A9 structure, features NXP i.MX6 processor and equips with rich interfaces, such as LVDS, I2C, LAN, USB, COM, m.2 Slot and SD card slot. Advantech assists customers to deep dive in software coding to enable stop and suspension during operations. Furthermore, together with our eco-system partners, Advantech offers application-oriented software support, such as kernel/ driver integration, and custom services to decrease customer’s burdens in introducing Arm-based solutions.

Enhancing production line quality and efficiency is a crucial aspect of drive toward Industry 4.0 transformation. Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) systems are becoming the quality control method of choice over manual checking and inspection. AOI enables fast and accurate inspection of assemblies to ensure that the quality of product leaving the production line is high and the items are built correctly without manufacturing faults.
Injection molding of plastic products is a large and complicated process involving dynamic temperatures and flow controls. Typically, thermoplastic molding material is melted in a heating cylinder and injected into molds via a hot runner system. Machine control programs orchestrate a symphony of valve openings and closings, modified according to carefully monitored runner temperatures.
The client required an inspection solution which combined the strengths of multi-axis robots and machine vision, and that not only enabled industrial cameras to move easily and capture the object from many angles, but also provided a precise and reliable system that helps automobile manufacturers improve checking speeds and quality, thus enhancing overall productivity.
As the injection molding process can be complicated, with any machine taking multiple molds for making different products, dynamic control was required over heating temperatures, viscosity, flow pressures and speeds, as well as valve and nozzle timings. Advantech offers the ARK-3520L equipped with the latest Intel® processor and unique modular design. Being fanless, and having no internal cabling, this high-performance automation computer is a robust and more reliable device than traditional computers used in harsh and dusty environments.
For this application, Advantech provided EIS-D150 for device monitoring and data manageability, which is equipped with the Intel® Core™ i5 processing power needed to support large-volume I/O applications. The EIS solution includes many of Advantech’s powerful software tools, including WISE-PaaS/RMM, an open-standard IoT device remote monitoring and management platform. WISE-PaaS/RMM can be interlinked with Advantech’s WebAccess/SCADA, which provides high volume I/O support for large-scale sensor data collection and control, as well as intuitive graphical user interfaces for supervisory management.

In a car assembly factory, there are many robotic arms on production lines lifting moving and placing objects and materials. Because some robotic arms are used to lift very heavy objects such as engines, while other smaller robotic arms are used to lift light materials such as sheet metal, the maintenance requirements for each robotic arm are also different.
An electroplating factory located in China sought to improve its manufacturing processes by making them safer and more efficient. The company planned to upgrade the existing traditional wired infrastructure to a wireless solution to protect vital factory equipment from chemical corrosion. They required a reliable data acquisition device with wireless connection stability and multiple sensor combination support.
UTX-3117 uses the latest Intel® Atom® E3900 series, Celeron® N3350, and Pentium® N4200 series processor technology to provide real-time IoT computing, power-efficiency, and plug & play gateway capabilities. Azure IoT Edge analyzes data from each robotic arm using value stream analysis and sends data to the Azure cloud service through the Azure IoT Hub. Azure cloud service syncs up work orders, material status within SAP, and MES to arrange production plans and maintenance schedules without impacting production capacity.
The customer chose Advantech’s WISE IoT Solution, which comprises an embedded box PC (that serves as a gateway) integrated with a WPAN control module and 35 sets of WPAN sensor nodes—WISE-1020 (IEEE 802.15.4e mesh network) for constructing highly reliable wireless sensor networks. With Advantech’s DS-570 embedded box PC equipped with multi-display technology serving as a local control center, the WISE PaaS and WISE IoT devices including the WPAN control module, sensor nodes, and gateway, were used to perform remote monitoring and management.
