APCNA’s Pacemaker Bank Update: e APCNA-Rotary Club Pacemaker Bank is working well in Karachi. In many ways this life-saving project is a victim of its own success. As you know the need for Permanent Pacemakers and De brillators in Pakistan is enormous. e same holds true for many other countries around the world. is leads to situations at times where the needs are far greater than the supply. Heartbeat Inter-national (HBI), Tampa, FL. depends on donations from Pacemaker Companies predominantly Medtronics and St. Jude’s for the supply of these devices. ey are in the process of replenishing their inventory.

e shipments of devices to Pakistan continue as sched-uled. We stay in close contact with HBI to increase the volume of these shipments. We are very thankful to our implanting physicians (Drs. Azam Shafqat, Dr.Zahid Jamal and Dr. Bashir Hanif ) in Pakistan who donate their time and expertise for this lifesaving work. e hard work by the Rotarians under the leadership of Ovais Kohari and his team is commendable. ey do an outstanding job tak-ing care of all the logistical issues. Heartbeat International, Pakistan, plans on a major fundraising drive to support our Pacemaker Bank. We are con dent that all our mem-bers will support this project.

APCNA and External Organizations:Our organization has grown over the years. With this growth has come an acknowledgement and appreciation of our projects by other organizations that do similar work. APCNA and its leadership feel strongly in working with these organizations. We continue our eff orts to introduce our work to organizations such as the ACC, HBI and CCO (Coalition of Cardiovascular Organizations).

is cooperation with ACC includes our strong support for the ACC-PAC. Our members are encouraged to work with the ACC in contacting our politicians in Congress to pass legislation which makes sense for patients and physicians. APCNA would also like to work with other cardiovascular organizations in the US and overseas in joint projects on preventive cardiology, CME conferences and the promotion of cardiac care worldwide. We continue to look at new opportunities for joint proj-ects and encourage our members to become involved in these eff orts. All of working together can achieve much more than our individual eff orts.

Executive Director of APCNA Appointed:

Since the formation of APCNA over fi ve years ago, and its exponential growth over this period, it was greatly felt by the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees of APCNA, the need to have continuation and consistency in all its activities year after year. The address of the organization was changing every year to the then elected President’s address. The banking, book keeping and accountings were also working on year to year basis. The newsletter was mailed form a different address every year. When dealing with other organizations like ACC, APPNA and pharmaceutical industry, we were providing new address of APCNA every January 2001. All these were not giving an image of continuation.

Keeping in view the diffi culties, the Executive Committee of 2008 in consultation with Chairman, CAB & L Committee and original writer of our constitution, Prof. S. Sultan Ahmed, and the Board of Trustees, approved the idea of nominating an Executive Director of APCNA. Our current President, Dr. Immad Sadiq, proposed Dr. Rizwan Karatela’s name as the fi rst Executive Director of APCNA. It was unanimously approved by the EC. The appointment of Dr. Karatela for fi ve years as ED of APCNA, was fi nally approved by the General Body in its Annual Meeting in Chicago in March 2008.

Since taking charge as Executive Director of APCNA Dr. Karatela has taken APCNA to a new height. The offi cial web site (www.apcna.net) was overhauled and is made more user friendly and interactive. He has consolidated the banking and accounting which was initially in a remote town in Illinois, to his town and address, where he could work directly with the bank and the accountant on more regular basis. The newsletter is now being published more regularly and consistently. There are many more merits to Dr. Karatela’s appointment, but among all, the biggest achievement is updating and maintaining the data base of APCNA’s annual and life members.

Looking from the rear view mirror, APCNA has achieved a lot in a short period of time, and now looking forward through the windshield, a bright future of APCNA lies ahead of us.Javed Suleman, MDMember BOT APCNA
