Welcome back! Hello and a very warm welcome back to everyone to the 2015 school year. I hope you all enjoyed a fantastic Christmas/New Year holiday as I have. A very special welcome to our new Prep families. The Prep students have started school in brilliant style! Our Prep parents are to be congratulated on the way they have prepared their children for school, your efforts have helped to make this transition to school as smooth as possible. Our Preps will be commencing full days (with the exception of Wednesdays during February) next week. A very exciting year ahead as the staff have been working hard to prepare a dynamic and engaging curriculum. All staff were involved in meetings and planning sessions prior to the students commencing school. We are excited to have all students back to school and eager to learn. The students have settled back in to school amazingly well and it has been wonderful to see them all, chat with them and to hear of the fun times had over the holidays but also to hear the children talking so positively about 2015. Even in the first few days the grades have settled back into school life extremely well and students have been actively re-establishing friendships and of course, are making lots of new ones! As you know we work extremely hard to provide the highest quality learning for all students at our school. In order for us to maximise on student capabilities we require your help. As parents and guardians you have a crucial role to play within the learning framework. Your assistance at home in discussing school is an invaluable aspect of student learning. This provides opportunities for students to reflect and consolidate their understandings. As a minimum it would be fantastic to set aside some time each night to share a love of literacy. Reading to your child, reading with them, listening to them read to you and discussing the book (pictures, themes, characters, plot, setting, what might happen next etc..) are all helpful ways of engaging with your child around literacy. Reading each night forms a part of the homework for all students at WHPS. Welcome again to the school year and I am buoyed the opportunities that lay ahead. 2015 Term Dates. A very exciting year ahead as the staff have been working hard to prepare a dynamic and engaging curriculum. All

ISSUE 1 DATED – 30th January 2015 - Week 1
Year 1-6 Meet the teacher interviews
In the week of Mon 9th
February – Friday 13th
February we will be conducting Meet the Teacher Interviews for all
students in Year 1-6. The Preps will conduct these meetings within their scheduled Wednesday parent teacher
meetings. These interviews provide an important aspect to your child’s learning. The purpose of the interviews is:
• To meet your child’s teacher
• For staff to get to know your child as a learner
• For staff to hear from you about your child – you know them best!
• Discuss any potential concerns or answer any questions about our learning programs
• For staff to build a profile of your child’s learning needs to ensure and individualized approach to the
classroom.
Please read and follow the attached instructions to book your interview time. Bookings are made online. Please
note that if you do not have the internet at home there is a bank of computers for parents to use here at school. If
you wish to access these computers at any time, simply come to the office and we will provide you with free
internet access.
To compliment our information gathering; you will also receive a “Getting to know your child” form to be
completed and returned by next Friday 6th February.
It would be fantastic to have all parents make a time to meet. Students are not required to attend these meetings.

On Friday 20th February we will open the school from 5-6pm. This is a chance to share in your child’s learning
environment and class work. Following this from 6-7.30pm we will enjoy our Family Fun Night. This provides the
school the chance to welcome our 2015 Prep students and for families to reconnect with some old friends and
make some new ones as well! There will be music, BBQ, jumping castle, face painting and drinks with friends. Come
along and start the school year with some fun.
Canteen
Please note that the canteen will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays this year. There will be no canteen on a
Monday.
If you are able to help out in the canteen, we would appreciate your help and support. Please contact Karen
Haeffner on 0414 230 486.
Please see our 2015 canteen pricelist attached to the newsletter and on our website.
Instrumental Music
The instrumental music program form students in Year 3-6 will commence in coming weeks. There will be further
notices being sent home next week to our year 3 students regarding purchasing instruments (and to any new
students). Please return these asap so that orders can be filled.
Can you HELP!?!
In 2015 all classroom helpers and volunteers are required to register via the school office. This involves completing
a registration form and providing your working with children check card. Whilst this may be seen as an imposition, I
encourage you all to follow this process which ensures the safety and wellbeing of our students. We highly value
and appreciate any form of support from home.
Working Bee
We are also hoping to get as many families as possible involved in our first Working Bee for 2015. This will be held
on Friday February 27th from 4pm. We will have a sausage sizzle, drinks and icy poles for families, friends and
students to enjoy whilst we complete a few jobs in around the school. Keep an eye out for more details to be
coming home soon!
Newsletter
Our newsletter is published each fortnight and is uploaded to our website on a Friday afternoon on each odd week.
(ie: Weeks 1, 3, 5 etc.. of each term).
Year level teams will be having input into our newsletters throughout the term and will develop their own team
newsletter at the beginning of each term. The term 1 team newsletter will be available on Friday 13th February.
Parents are also welcomed to join our email list for all newsletters. You will join our distribution list and receive the
latest editions hot off the press via your preferred email account. If you wish to take up this option please send an
Please observe the parking restrictions and speed limits around the school. Local council and Victoria Police often
patrol these areas. We have two pedestrian crossings that are supervised each day before and after school. Please
use this service and ensure all children use these crossings.
Also please note that the staff carpark is not for parental use. This presents a danger to students and if parents use
this space our staff will have nowhere to park!
Never leave children unattended in cars
On hot days, it is important to remember that you should never leave your child alone in a car.The temperature
inside a car on hot days begins to rise as soon as the door closes and within minutes the temperature inside can be
double the temperature outside.Leaving children in hot cars – even for a moment – can result in injury or death.Young children’s smaller body size and underdeveloped nervous system places them at a much greater risk of life-
threatening heatstroke, dehydration and other serious health risks.Victorian legislation makes leaving a child
unattended in a car a criminal offence.
Penalties have recently been increased and now range from fines of $3690 and/or six months in jail.
If you are travelling with a child in a car and you need to get out, make sure you take your child with you. No
exceptions. No excuses.
Congratulations once again to all of our wonderful students on making such a positive start to the school year.
Once again I welcome you all back to the 2015 school year and I look forward to seeing you in and around the
school.
Enjoy the weekend ahead!
Warm regards,
Michael
