TIPS,FACTSANDF.A.Q.’SQ:WherecanIgetanevaluationformychildwherethere’snolongwaitlist.A:TherearemanyplacesWITHOUTawaitinglist!Seepages4-11FACT:MANYTYPESOFPROFESSIONALSCANEVALUATECHILDRENFORAUTISMANDADHDINLUCDINGPSYCHOLOGISTS,PSYCHIATRISTS,NEUROLOGISTS,NURSEPRACTIONERS,LICENSEDCLINICIANS&DEVELOPMENTALPEDIATRICIANS.It’snotthedegreethatsomeonehasearnedthatmakesthemagooddiagnostician,it’stheirtestingandevaluationskillsandtheirexperiencethatcounts.Therearemanymethodsforlookingatachild’sneeds.It’samyththatonlyadevelopmentalpediatriciancandiagnoseAutism.FACT:Sometimesclinicianswhodiagnoseachildwillmakerecommendationsforcertaintreatmentsandservices(behavioraloreducational.)Differentsystemsmaynotalwaysbeabletohonororaccommodatetheserecommendationsbecausesystemsdifferintheirapproachtoworkingwithchildren’sneeds.Rememberthatnooneskillareaisthedomainofonetypeofexpertsuchasaspeech,occupationaloranABAtherapist.Takingachildtoanofficetopracticeskillsinisolationwithaspecialistdoesnothavelonglastingeffectscomparedtoparentsjoiningthetherapistandlearningmeaningfulskills,itisimportanttorememberthatthequalityisalwaysbetterthanquantityand“moreisnotalwaysbetter.”Infact,itisalwaysbestpracticewhenatherapistteachesskillsandtechniquesthatfamilymembers(orteachers)learnhowtodothemselvesand,blendthemintotheirregularroutinessothattheybecomenaturalforachildandfamily.Alsokeepinmindthatjustbecausesomeonehasadegreeinacertainfielditdoesnotalwaysmeantheyhavespecifictrainingandexperienceinworkingwithcertaintypesofchildren’sneeds.Forexample,notallSpeechTherapyprogramsoffertrainingonworkingwithchildrenwithAutism.Q:Myfamilydoesn’tbelieveinlabelingourchildandwedon’twantourchildtohaveadiagnosis.A:Althoughyoumaybefearfulthatyourchildwillbethoughtofdifferentlyiftheyhaveadiagnosis,orthata“label”willaffecthischoicesinthefuture;avoidinganevaluationthatwillhelpyoubetterunderstandyourchild’sneedswillonlyprolongyourchild’sdifficulties.Weasparentsmaysometimeswanttoprotectourchildrenbutinfactwemaybepreventingthemfromgettinghelptheyreallyneed.Whenchildrencanaccessneededservices,theirlong-termabilitiesaremoreimprovedandtheydeveloplessproblemsbecausethey,andthosewhocareforthem,aregettinghelpsooner.Q:Canamedicationhelpmychildwithhisbehavior?A.Medicationisneverananswerbyitself.Notallbehaviorschangewithamedicationandmedicationsdonotteachachildneededskillstolasttheirlifetime,parentsdo.IfyourchildhasbehavioralneedswestronglyrecommendthatyoutryPCIT(seepage9)orFilialtherapyinaddition.Therearemanythingsfamiliescandotohelpachildwiththeirbehaviorinadditiontomedications,pleaseconsultwithyourchild’sIEPteamtoreviewnewthingsyoumighttrytoo!Therearemanyhelpfultoolsthatyoucanfindtoaddressbehaviornomatterwhatyourchild’sneedsareonpage15.Q:Whatisthedifferencebetweenapsychiatristandapsychologist?A:Apsychiatristisamedicaldoctorwhocanprescribemedications.Apsychologistisnotamedicaldoctorandcannotprescribemedications.Apsychologistgenerallyhasmoretrainingonhowtoevaluatechildrenforbehaviorandlearningproblems.
