    ImplementingElo'sscheme

    TheUSCFimplementedElo'ssuggestionsin1960,[4]andthesystemquicklygainedrecognitionasbeingbothmorefairandaccuratethantheHarknessratingsystem.Elo'ssystemwasadoptedbytheWorldChessFederation(FIDE)in1970.ElodescribedhisworkinsomedetailinthebookTheRatingofChessplayers,PastandPresent,publishedin1978.

    Subsequentstatisticaltestshavesuggestedthatchessperformanceisalmostcertainlynotdistributedasanormaldistribution,asweakerplayershavegreaterwinningchancesthanElo'smodelpredicts."Whatistheelosystem"(http://tellyousomething.com/index.php/2015/07/08/whatistheelosystem/).Therefore,theUSCFandsomechesssitesuseaformulabasedonthelogisticdistribution.Significantstatisticalanomalieshavealsobeenfoundwhenusingthelogisticdistributioninchess.[5]FIDEcontinuestousetheratingdifferencetableasproposedbyElo.ThetableiscalculatedwithExpectation0,andstandarddeviation2000/7.

    Thenormalandlogisticdistributionpointsare,inaway,arbitrarypointsinaspectrumofdistributionswhichwouldworkwell.Inpractice,bothofthesedistributionsworkverywellforanumberofdifferentgames.

    Differentratingssystems

    Thephrase"Elorating"isoftenusedtomeanaplayer'schessratingascalculatedbyFIDE.However,thisusageisconfusingandmisleading,becauseElo'sgeneralideashavebeenadoptedbymanyorganizations,includingtheUSCF(beforeFIDE),theInternetChessClub(ICC),FreeInternetChessServer(FICS),Yahoo!Games,andthenowdefunctProfessionalChessAssociation(PCA).Eachorganizationhasauniqueimplementation,andnoneofthemfollowsElo'soriginalsuggestionsprecisely.ItwouldbemoreaccuratetorefertoalloftheaboveratingsasEloratings,andnoneofthemastheElorating.
