Regardless of when Elmira reaches win number 300, the Soaring Eagles will join the likes of Mid- dlebury (557), Bowdoin (395), Gustavus (383), and Plattsburgh (317). STILL PERFECT EC skated away with a pair of ECAC West Conference victories over Buffalo State last weekend, keeping the Soaring Eagles undefeated in ECAC West play. Elmira defeated the Bengals in Buffalo on Friday by a 2-1 score, then completed the home-and-home series, and the season-sweep, with a 5-0 victory at the Murray Athletic Center. MAKE IT 10 STRAIGHT The weekend victories moved EC’s current win streak to 10 games and their unbeaten streak to 13 games. This matches the longest win streak any Elmira team has strung together over the last four years and is the longest current win streak in the NCAA, across all divisions. WILGOSH WITH THE GAME-WINNER EC was tied 1-1 with Buffalo State late in the third period last Friday, but Brooke Wilgosh ’15 ensured EC’s ninth straight victory with the go-ahead goal with 3:22 left in regulation. The goal marked Wilgosh’s first game-winner of the season and fifth of her career. HATS OFF TO DELAINEY Cassidy Delainey ’15 recorded a hat-trick against Buffalo State on Sat- urday, the first three-goal game of her career. Delainey scored each of Elmira’s first two goals on the power play, assisted on the third goal of the afternoon, then completed her hat-trick in the third period. lethal on the PoWer PlayCassidy Delainey ’15 continues to wreak havoc on the power play, increas-ing her national lead in power-play goals to four after notching her 12th and 13th man-up goals of the season in Saturday’s 5-0 victory over Buf-falo State. With 13 power-play goals, Delainey has matched Jenna McCall ’10 for most power-play goals scored in Elmira College single-season his-tory. Maybe even more impressive is the fact that her 13 power-play scores are the most by any skater in any division of NCAA ice hockey, men or women. The next closest power-play scorer is NCAA Division I’s Jonny Brodzinski from St. Cloud State, who has 10.
nearing 50 PointSAshley Ryan ’15 enters the weekend with 48 points on the season, just two shy of accomplishing something no EC player has done since the 2008-09 season, score 50 points. The last 50-point scorer to wear the Pur-ple and Gold was Kayla Coady ’09, who concluded her senior season with 56 points.
unaniMouS no. 1Elmira maintained their place atop the U.S. College Hockey Online (US-CHO) and D3hockey.com National Polls when they were released on February 9th. However, for the first time since the 2002-03 season, the Soaring Eagles were voted a unanimous number one, receiving all 15 first-place votes. That year, EC posted a 23-4-2 record en route to their second straight NCAA Division III National Championship.
Soaring eagleS at the toPIndividually, Elmira has several players at the top of the national statistical leaderboards. Ashley Ryan ’15 is the national leader in points per game (2.29) and assists per game (1.67); Ashton Hogan ’15 leads the nation in goals per game (1.24), shorthanded goals (5), and game-winning goals (5); Brooke Wilgosh ’15 leads the country in defensemen scoring (1.14 ppg); Cassidy Delainey ’15 is tops in the nation in power-play goals (13); and Kelcey Crawford ’18 is the only qualifying goaltender in the nation to not suffer a defeat in 2014-15 (1.000 win pct.).
inaugural SeaSonThis will be the first-ever series between EC and William Smith College as 2014-15 is the first season of existence for the Herons. William Smith has a 2-18-1 record so far in their inaugural season, with wins over Neumann University and New England College. One item plaguing the Herons in 2014-15 is the time spent in the penalty box as they rank eighth in the na-tion with 10.7 penalty minutes per game. That has forced William Smith’s penalty-kill unit onto the ice 100 times, relinquishing 26 power-play goals in the process, the most of any women’s NCAA Division III institution.
toP 10 froShKrista Federow has carried the load offensively for William Smith this sea-son. The Niagara Falls native leads the Herons in goals and points at 11 and 18, respectively, and also shares the team-lead in assists with seven. Additionally, her 0.86 points per game average is tied for the ninth-highest average in country in freshman scoring.
