Your President has used the past two and a half months reaping the fruits of genealogical research. By this I mean that I have corresponded with many of my distant cousins over the past 25 years. Even though I have not actually met most -of these in person I have come to love them all through our continued correspop..dence. Thus in the last few weeks my travels have taken me as far west as California and as far east as Florida during which time I had the privilege of attending t~ree Nance Family Reunions in as many states.
This has been a mountain top experience for me, and I would highly recommend such a trip t ~ all of you.
N01'1 that I have expressed l~ha1: such a trip meant to me I want to also say that I have an equal feeling each year when many of our out-of-town members gather in the Shreveport-Bossier area for our annual genealogical workshop and pre-l>1Orkshop dinner. This is not only a time when old friends get to,gether but I have, in the past, managed to find at these meetings at least one heretofore unknown cousin and this year I hope another will appear. You too may have such good luck. So make plans noto1 to come and enjoy a good workshop and a pre ... workshop dinner ' l.mere good fellowship always prevails. See you -Allgust 13th at ' the Barksda'le Air Force Base Officers' Club.
THE GENIE, July 1976 -109-
Sincerely,
'J/ /.ljftf l' ;tL C-R

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
This issue of THE GENIE marks the completion of two years as editor of your quarterly. It has been an enjoyable, interesting, and educational e~perience to work with the members of our Association to keep THE GENIE alive, kicking and growing. My heartfelt thanks to the many workers and contributors who have done so much to help; because of them, your GENIE thrives and the future looks bright.
As always, we are interested in receiving your comments as to items or features you'd like to see printed, and contributions of material for publication are always most gratefully received. He are particularly interested in printing more records of Douthern Arkansas - does anyone have som·; to share?
tole would also like to print more queries - just write them out in roughly the same format as those you see'printed in THE GENIE and send them in - they needn't be typed. Who knows, someone may be able to help you pin down that elusive ancestor! Sharing and help:i.ng'each' other are the reasons for having genealogical societies and associations such as ours.
Speaking of'.help -our Tenth Annual Horkshop, August 14, is sure to be a tremendous help to anyone researc:l1ing Virginia, the Carolin::ls, or Georgia. Dr. Williams I expert knowledge of the'~south Atlantic coastal states will be invaluable to all of us with ancestors in that area~ Be sure to be there, and don't forget the traditional pre-Works'hop'-~inherParty the epening of August 13th honoring Dr. Williams. You Ire invited - plan'to' come';" we'll all have an enjoyable time. Registration and reservation forms will be found in this issue.
Remember, THE GENIE is YOUR quarterly. Your comments or suggestions are always appreciated.
Happy Researching!

STEWART-WALKERVILLE CEMETERY WALKERVILLE, COLUMBIA COUNTY, ARKANSAS
Surveyed by Terrell O. Hamaker
The cemetery is located 14 miles south of Magnolia and % mile west of Walkerville on Arkansas Hwy 19. This cemetery was formally established in 1956 by a group of concerned citizens of the community. The land, which was used as a cemetery prior to 1956, was donated by Mr. Thomas Byrd Walker, who died 24 May 1970. The up-keep is paid for by personal donations plus an endowment fund that produces some income. Terrell O. Hamaker and Charles E. Hughes did the civil engineering work necessary to establish the cemetery. In September 1975 the trustees were: F. U. Smith, George Stewart, A. B. Daily and Mr. Hamaker.

Another group of budding genealogists have completed the genealogical research course (Genealogy 201: Scientific Genealogical Research) offered by Bossier Community College in Bossier City, LA. And, once again, the class had the highest attendance rate and lowest dropout rate of any course taught there.
Completing the course in the Spring 1976 semester were: Virginia A. Ferguson, ~ Claude B. Finley, Jr., Ciel Currie Glover, Shirley R. Graham, Aubrey Lee Hanes, Herbert R. Hanisee, Bobbye E. Jones, Louise C. Juchartz, Jimmy R. LeGrand, Marguerite J. Loftin, Pauline Harper Luck, Kathryn M. McNutt, Sharon J. Paxton, Darrell Phillips, Ursula G. Phillips, Evelyn H. Rees, Martin L. Rees, Shirley M. Reynolds, Andrea L. Saarela, Jane M. Schtml.acher, Frances F. Snider, Herman A. Vogel and Martha S. Vogel.
A reader has written to ask ,a'bout 'the Soundex of 1880. She' stated that " •••• only ·three Soundex films for Arkansas are in' the Shreve Memc)rUl'LibTary ••• " and that " •••• none of these fit '·the 'lines of •• ,; or the relilted lilies 6if •••• , which I am working on." She also wanted to know what the line with ''M.D.C.'' under it means.
First, the Shreve Memorial Library does not have a program to purchase all the Soundex film. The cost of these compared to the library's budget puts them completely out of reach. Soundex, film that is there now, for the most part, are rolls that have been purchased by patrons of the library and then donated to the library. That is why you will find what appears to be the middle of the index.
If you'; firida'roll that :applies to the names you are working on, then you are inde'ed fortunate. If the Hbrarydoes 'not have yournaines on file, then you have three choices: 1) purcn\ase the film yo Lirs elf and (if you so 'desire) donate it to the library after you finish (it's tax deductible); 2) send off and have someone in another city read 'the fiim for you (which will sometimes be as much as buying the film yourself) ; or' 3) do without.
Now, the second part of the question, ''What do the letters M.C.D. mean •••• ?" These letters stand for ''Municipal Civil Pistrict" which is usually the township, precinct or ward in which the person lived.
Another reader has asked where the early state land records of Alabama can be found. If you fail to find anything in the counties, write to the Department of Archives and History at Montgomery, Ala., and to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. -
Mr. JMM asked what church a child born in 1864 at Algiers, La., would be ',baptized in. The Holy Name of Mary Church (established 1847) is located at 500
Etiza Street, New Orleans, LA 70114. A 19iers is now a part of New Orleans. When writing I suggest a SASE with your letter. The records' of St. Bartholomew Church (established about 1842) are also at this address.

To SCR I would suggest that you check through .Nell M. Nugent's book, Cavaliers and Pioneers, E. G. Swem's Virginia Historical Index (2 volumes, 1934 & 1936), Old Churches and Families of Virginia by W. Meade, and the tax lists of 1782-87. All of these are good finding tools for early Vi~~i~ia.
BJA, you can check James Bryan Grimes' North C9rolina Wills and Fred Olds' North Carolina Wills for possible leads for your N~rth Carolina problem. Grimes' work covers tLe period to 1760 and DIes' book covers 1760-1800. A word of caution, however, on both works. Grimes so abbreviated his notes that there are important omissions and Olds' iq full of errors and omissions,
JRL, yes, the census was taken in Georgia in 1790, 1800 and 1810; however, they are missing. There are several substitutes you may ~se. There were six land lotteries between 1805 and 1832. The 1805 lottery is important because not only were the names of ~ registrants listed, the county of their residence, registration number, results of the dra~-l and descriptive comments appear,_ ': Th~ 1805 lottery is a fine substitute for the 1800 census. The third lottery was made 'in 1820 while the fifth (1827) and the sixth (1832) will help fill the gap for the 1830 census. Of course, tax digests for the various counties are also very valuable for the missing years.
MLF states her problem as being unable to account how her family ended up in southeast Alabama when all records show that the family migrated to M~ssissippi. This problem points out the need to learn not only the genealogy of your family, but, you must learn the genealogy of places, too. In this case the records show that the family did, in fact, move. " .'" J.:o the Mississipp.i.J:errito~y .· •. f :i~. in 1812. The place where they settled down was then called the ''Mississippi Territory". But, in 1819 that area became part of the newly formed "Alabama Territory". A closer look at the area shows that part of Barbour County was carved out of oJ~ Henry County and partly out of the Creek Cession of 1832. The area where your family settled was ·the Henry County part. '
, I
KED, officially you .were born in the tmm ' that appears on your birth certificate. Your problem' is co~on among those born in rural areas, especially when the child was born in the home. In your family records you should mention that you were born in the Roeville Community which is near Abbeville. Mention also that the doctor lived in Abbeville and that i(3 probably why he put that tOWI,l as your birthplace.
For SP who wanted to know if an application for marriage license is s 'uffici'ent evidence th~t a couple married. The answer is a quick and simple, NO! Your problem is similar to many others. In all probability the couple did get married; but, if the minister did not file a return or a notation appears on the record showing that the marriage took place, I'd start looking for other evidence. I am reminded of a couple that applied for a license to marry on four separate occasions. The first two showed the girl as being of age. The third and fourth showed her e~ being 14 years of age; however, the third had what .was supposed to be her father's permission. The fourth application also had her ' father's permission, however there is a world of difference in the handwriting of the two permission letters. The time span between the first application anq the last was six months. What happened? The couple trie'd three times to get married and were probably found out and stopp~d by the girl's parents. Would you have accepted the application that first appea'red? Another question comes to miI!t,a.. ' Maybe the couple didn't get married at all, or did they? You've got to search for more sources. Are there land records, wills, any kind of record that shows the couple as man and wife? If so, then it is possible that the minister forgot to file his return. ~his happened

in many cases. Check for family Bibles, for correspondence, for insurance papers.
LJ, if you have to write a letter to a foreign country perhaps you could find a language teacher at one of the colleges in your area to translate for you. When writing to a foreign country it is always the polite thing to write to them in their own language. It is vain to think that everyone speaks English. You might ask in a last paragraph if the person you are writing could correspond in EngHsh because you do not know his language.

BOOK REVIEWS
THE ISLE OF MAN, by R. H. Kinvig. Cloth bound, 249 pp. Published by Charles E. Tuttle Co., Inc., Rutland, Vermont 05701. $14.95 per copy.
This is a history of the Isle of Man, with this particular book being the third edition, completely revised and reset, was first published over 25 years ago. Since the words "Isle of Man" bear such a "romantic sound, and since it is an island that has been influenced for over 1500 years by its larger neighbors -- England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales -- it bears a most interesting pre-history and history. This work also reviews the institutions, personalities and events which have shaped the culture and traditions of the island. Particular attention has been paid to modern developments, and the writing has been brought up-to-date. Illustrated by photographs and especially prepared drawings make this the most complete account now available of an island society unique in Western Europe.
