  • 1The vegetation and land cover of theBritish countryside was surveyed in 1990,repeating and extending the baselineestablished by a similar survey of thecountryside and its vegetation in 1978. Theresults of Countryside Survey 1990(CS1990) were published by theDepartment of the Environment in 1993(Barr et al. 1993). The work described inVolume 2 (of which this Technical Annex ispart) builds upon these analyses bydescribing in more detail the botanicalcharacteristics of the British countryside andbotanical change between 1978 and 1990.This Annex provides lists of Ellenbergindicator values derived as part of Module 6of the Ecological Factors controllingbiodiversity in the British countryside(ECOFACT) research programme, and wasco-funded by the Department of theEnvironment, Transport and the Regions(DETR) and the Ministry of Agriculture,Fisheries and Food (MAFF). Othercomponents of the ECOFACT programmewere funded by the Scottish OfficeAgriculture, Environment and FisheriesDepartment (SOAEFD) and the NaturalEnvironment Research Council (NERC).

    The objectives of this work were:

    to produce overall indicators of changein botanical characteristics in the Britishcountryside;

    to enable comparison with other systemsfor the classification and description ofBritish habitats and vegetation, includingthose used in the European Union,Great Britain and Northern Ireland;

    to describe the botanical characteristicsof the countryside and to provide anational context for the more rare andlocalised elements of biodiversity;

    to develop hypotheses to explain the causesof changes in botanical character;

    to provide accessible and readilyunderstandable results, using theCountryside Information System (CIS),where appropriate.

    Work using the Ellenberg indicator values tohelp explain the causes of change are thesubject of ECOFACT Volume 3 (Firbank et al.in prep).

    Initially, it was intended to use logisticregression to establish the relationshipsbetween species and their controllingenvironmental variables, but work on thePark Grass Experiment (Hill & Carey 1997)showed the feasibility of using Ellenbergindicator values to interpret differencesbetween vegetation composition. This Annexprovides lists of the re-calibrated Ellenbergindicator values for British plants.

    Ellenberg, in a series of publications(Ellenberg 1979, Ellenberg 1988, Ellenberget al. 1991), defined a set of indicator values(German Zeigerwerte) for the vascular plantsof central Europe. These have been widelyused, both in central Europe and in adjacentparts of western Europe but have not beenavailable in a form convenient for Britishecologists. The purpose of this report is tomake Ellenbergs indicator values availablefor the whole British and Irish flora(excluding microspecies), both as the originalvalues where these were given, and as valuesrecalculated or estimated by ourselves.

    The basis of indicator values is the realisedecological niche. Plants have a certain rangeof tolerance of temperature, light, soil pH,and so on. If we wish to make inferencesabout the ecological conditions pertaining ata site, much useful information can be

  • 2obtained from the flora. Indeed, the flora mayindicate quite a narrow range of conditions. IfRhododendron ponticum is present, the soil iscertainly acid. If Scabiosa columbaria (smallscabious) is present then the soil is certainlybasic or alkaline. Indicator values encapsulatethis information. For example on the scale R(soil reaction), R. ponticum has the value 3 andS. columbaria has the value 8. These values arenot mean pH values, but are on an arbitraryscale reflecting soil pH though not directlybased on measurements.

    The relation between Ellenberg values and ameasured environmental variable can becalculated for a restricted range of habitats, butmay not hold over the whole range of a species.Indeed, as explained by us elsewhere (Hill et al.submitted), an advantage of indicator values isthat they may be more sensitive to therequirements of plants than is a selectedphysical variable such as depth to water table.

    Species are not always constant in theirecological requirements and ought in principleto have different indicator values in differentparts of their range. Thus, Primula vulgaris islargely confined to woods in eastern England,but occurs widely on grassy banks in the northand west. Its shade requirements differdepending on position in the country. Thegrass Danthonia decumbens is confined insoutheast England to acid soils, but occurs alsoon chalk and limestone in the west. Likewise,several species have different pH requirementsin GB from those in central Europe. Thisresults in a discrepancy between the originalEllenberg value and that calculated by us forBritish conditions. Centaurea nigra, forexample, was given an R value of 3 for centralEurope but 6 for GB. C. scabiosa, on the otherhand, has an R value of 8 in both areas.

    The values given here are intended as typicalvalues for GB. Where there are ecologicaldifferences within GB, an intermediate value isused.

  • 3Indicator values are given here for 1791 taxa.These include all 1479 species native toBritain except for microspecies in the generaHieracium, Rubus and Taraxacum. The list oftaxa is based on that used for the Atlas 2000project (Arnold & Preston 1997), which issupported by DETR.

    Indicator values are given also for 38 speciesthought to be possibly native, 239 introducedspecies, 6 hybrids, and the 3 subspecies ofCarex viridula. The list aims to becomprehensive and to include all vascularplant species likely to be found in the Britishcountryside, including the commonest cropspecies such as Picea sitchensis and Triticumaestivum. Included in the list of Britishnatives are 47 endemics, of which 15 are inSorbus, 9 in Euphrasia, 8 in Limonium, 2 inCochlearia and 13 one each in 13 othergenera. The 14 native Irish species that arenot known as natives in GB have beenincluded, as have 12 species native to theChannel Islands but not known from GB orIreland.

    Nomenclature and code numbers are thoserecommended for the current project Atlas2000 (Arnold & Preston 1997).

  • 5Ellenberg defined seven major scales, of whichfive are presented here. The two that areomitted, T (temperature) and K(continentality) correspond quite closely to themajor biome and eastern limit categoriesdefined for European distributions by Preston& Hill (1997). Neither T nor K values aresatisfactory in an oceanic climate such as thatof Britain; those for K are particularlyunreliable, especially as Ellenbergs definitionwas geographical rather than climatic. Weintend at a future date to calculate values forsummer temperature, winter temperature andannual rainfall, based on the geographicaldistribution of species recorded by mappingschemes such as Atlas 2000 (Pearman &Preston 1996).

    The five scales have values defined as follows.A few species are given for each value by wayof explanation.

    L Light(values for canopy tree species refer to preferences ofthe sapling stage of the life cycle)

    1 Plant in deep shade (no examples for GB).

    2 Between 1 and 3 (Epipogium aphyllum,Neottia nidus-avis, Trichomanes speciosum).

    3 Shade plant, mostly less than 5% relativeillumination, seldom more than 30%illumination when trees are in full leaf(Galium odoratum, Listera cordata,Mercurialis perennis).

    4 Between 3 and 5 (Circaea lutetiana,Lamiastrum galeobdolum, Poa nemoralis).

    5 Semi-shade plant, rarely in full light, butgenerally with more than 10% relativeillumination when trees are in leaf (Carexpendula, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, Primulavulgaris).

    6 Between 5 and 7 (Anthriscus sylvestris,Digitalis purpurea, Teucrium scorodonia).

    7 Plant generally in well lit places, but alsooccurring in partial shade (Arrhenatherumelatius, Carex flacca, Poa trivialis, Viciacracca).

    8 Light-loving plant rarely found whererelative illumination in summer is lessthan 40% (Cardamine hirsuta, Orchismorio, Thymus polytrichus, Vacciniumoxycoccus).

  • 9Indicator values published here have beenderived in several ways. The originalEllenberg values are those published byEllenberg et al. (1991), with the differencethat we have not attempted to distinguishbetween doubtful values and the value x,which signified wide amplitude. We foundthat many species indicated as having wideamplitude in central Europe did not havewide amplitude in GB. We have, therefore,not used this category here.

    The British values are indicated in the tableas Light (final), Moisture (final) etc. Thesehave been derived by a variety of means. Inthe first place, we took a large dataset,consisting of the quadrat data from CS1990(Barr et al. 1993) and summarised quadratdata from Volumes 14 of British PlantCommunities (Rodwell 199195). Usingthese data, we calculated new values bycomparing original indicator values of specieswith the mean values of their associatedspecies (Hill et al. submitted). Thesecalculated values are the basis of the finalvalues. Where species had not been found inquadrats, we used information frompublished sources, notably Palmer, Bell &Butterfield (1992), Stewart, Pearman &Preston (1994) and a draft of a forthcomingRed Data Book of vascular plants (Wigginton,in press). All cases where there was a largediscrepancy between the calculated value andthe original Ellenberg value were checkedcarefully. Where, on the basis of fieldexperience, we thought that the originalvalue was closer to the truth, we changed thefinal value to accord with our opinions.

    The calculation was almost totallyunsuccessful with saltmarsh plants. For Svalues, we therefore went back to firstprinciples and rewrote the definitions to be inclose accord with Ellenbergs but easier toapply.

    The result is that the values presented hereare a mixture of objective results based oncalculation and subjectively derived valuesbased on field experience and publishedsources. This may at first sight appear an oddmixture, but there were all sorts of factorsincluding sampling bias in the quadrat data,which meant that a fully objective procedurewas not possible.

    The Ellenberg indicator values have alreadybeen used in ECOFACT Volume 1 (Bunceet al. 1999) to help describe the characteristicsof the vegetation classes. Also, as mentionedin the Introduction, they are an integral partof both ECOFACT Volumes 2 and 3. Theindicator values have also been incorporatedinto the Modular Analysis of Vegetation andInterpretation System (MAVIS). A packagecurrently being tested which also providesready access to the vegetation analysisprocedures of the Countryside VegetationSystem (CVS), National VegetationClassification (NVC) and Competitor-Stesstolerator-Ruderal characterisation (CSR).

    The purpose of this report is to presentindicator values for British species, not to giveinstructions on how to use them. The mainuse of the values is for environmentalmonitoring. For examples, please refer to thepublications of Diekmann & Falkengren-Grerup (1998), Ellenberg et al. (1991),Hannerz & Hnell (1997), Koerner et al.(1997), Thimonier et al. (1994) and van derMaarel et al. (1985). Typically, meanindicator values for quadrat samples arecalculated at intervals over time, and changesare interpreted by reference to the indicatorin question. For example, increasing N valuesare likely to indicate eutrophication.

    A secondary use of indicator values is as ameans of interpreting ordinations. Itfrequently happens that ordinations producesimilar gradients, even when the originalassumptions are very different (for aremarkable example, which relates Grimesstress values to Ellenbergs N values, seeGrime et al. 1997). An advantage of theEllenberg values is that they are pre-definedand therefore provide an objectivebenchmark to interpret ordinations in termsof known gradients.
