Dear Supporters of Elk County Catholic School System:You’re fired. That might seem like a strange way to start a letter, but hear me out. I do not mean “fired” in the way our current president used the term on his former realitytelevision show. Rather, I got the idea when speaking to Dr. Jim Gallagher, the Superintendentof Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Erie. Jim came into the job ready to build a BONFIRE, sending a dramatic signal about the future ofCatholic education. To Jim’s credit he has worked with schools to help us create just thesekinds of success stories, some right here in Elk County. At the same time, it’s easy to get discouraged by demographics, finances, regulations, theabuse scandal, not to mention a culture that fights you every step of the way. So sometimes,rather than building a raging bonfire, Jim says our mission is more like protecting a delicateflame from the winds that are buffeting our Church. I saw this dynamic in action this summer when I attended the annual National Down SyndromeCongress convention in downtown Pittsburgh. My six-year-old daughter Beatrice startedkindergarten at St. Leo School this fall. She has Down Syndrome. This is the first time theconvention has been in Pittsburgh in almost 20 years, so I took my three oldest children withme so they could learn more about how to support their sister. We arrived on Thursday and took a long walk up to the Strip District. After shopping, westopped in at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church to say a prayer for Bea. St. Stan’s is one of the“Center City Churches” that has recently been reconfigured as part of the Diocese ofPittsburgh’s painful but necessary reorganization plan. As we kneeled to pray, we were surprised to see four nuns in full habits kneeling alongside usin the pews of the darkened church. My kids were flabbergasted by the enormous crown,typical in Polish churches, over the altar. On our way out we checked the schedule andrealized if we woke up very early the next morning, we could make it to the daily Mass onFriday. The kids were impressed enough with the church that they agreed.

The following morning we hiked to the church and were again surprised when we entered. Inaddition to the nuns, there was a group of 12-15 young adults, a few with young children,sitting together in the pews. One was wearing a cassock. I am often the youngest person inthe church when I attend a daily Mass, so this was a welcome sight. My kids noticed that theyoung adults sang along when the elderly priest sang Agnus Dei in Latin. After Mass one of the members of the young group introduced himself. He was a Princetongrad who works in wealth management at PNC Bank. I asked him if he and the crew were allmembers of St. Stan’s parish. He said no, but mentioned that since it is close to downtownwhere many of them work, they regularly meet there for Mass on Fridays. It was one of the great things that I have seen in a long time. It was not something that wouldmake the news on CNN or even EWTN. In other words, it was not a bonfire. Rather, it was abunch of young, committed Catholics getting together in a small way to protect the flame oftheir faith. These kids (I am old enough now to call them kids) care enough to make thatchurch, that humble little Mass, a centerpiece of their lives. Afterward, they circled upinformally in the parking lot and chatted with the priest and the nuns. I was told that theyoung gentleman in the cassock is in the seminary at St. Vincent. We have not given up on bonfires here at ECCSS. We do great things academically. One of our2019 graduates attended Princeton in the fall, actually. The young man I met at St. Stan’s isdeeply involved in the Catholic community there and agreed to send me a few contacts for ourgraduate. Our sports teams win championships, our music and art programs are some of thebest in the region. We have two former graduates working their way through the seminaryright now. But we also see those small, flickering flames, the day to day success stories that show ourteachers and students tenderly protecting the flame of their faith. I see it with Beatrice and theway her teachers work to bring her into the faith. I also see it in our other schools, when ournew Inclusion Coordinators work with other struggling learners. I see it when one of oursports teams prays in the chapel prior to a game. The one thing these things all have in common? They would be impossible without yoursupport. Academics, extracurriculars and faith formation require resources. Our parents andparishes make sacrifices, but our schools cannot operate without your generous donations. So when I say, “You’re fired,” I mean that in the Pentecost Sunday sense: I firmly believe thatthe Holy Spirit imbues our donors with a strong passion for Catholic education, allowing themto see that ECCSS works in ways large and small—bonfires and tiny flickers—to keep our faithalive. Yes, these are trying times for our Church, but the fire continues to burn. Thank you for tending to it. Sam MacDonald

All Saints Day Mass Senior Class Retreat

A former resident of St. Marys and strong supporter of our missiongenerously offered to match one dollar for every four dollars raised byECCSS to support the safety of our students through electronicallycontrolled entry systems and expanded video/camera monitoring of allcampuses. The campaign generated approximately $100,000 to providethe safest environment our students deserve.

Throughout the month of December, the student body at St. Marys CatholicMiddle School collected pop tabs in conjunction with “Kindness for Kinsley”, acommunity service project that promotes random (and purposeful) acts ofkindness in memory of Kinsley Kronenwetter. The collection also fit into themiddle school’s Advent service project theme of “Bless Them. Change Me.”which promoted selfless acts for others throughout the season.On Tuesday, January 15, the seventh-grade students delivered the pop tabs tothe City of St. Marys Police Department. The tabs will be recycled and allproceeds will benefit families that utilize the Ronald McDonald House ofPittsburgh. The students also passed out “Kindness for Kinsley” cardsfollowing their school Mass that day, which encourage others to performrandom acts of kindness on the 15th of each month in Kinsley’s memory.

Earlier this school year, members of the ECCOutdoor Club got together to clean up litterand trash in our local parks.

Ms. Inzana’s and Mrs. Bosnik’s fifth graders atSt. Marys Catholic Elementary delivered thefleece blankets that they and their fourth-grade peers made during Catholic SchoolsWeek. The students made stops at ElkHaven, Pinecrest, and the Hahne CancerCenter in Dubois.

Students at St. Mary's Catholic ElementarySchool donated non-perishable food items tothe Christian Food Bank. The school collected337 pounds of canned goods. Students ingrades 1-3 also colored greeting/prayer cardsincluded in the food boxes for the families.

ECCHS students traveled to theDominican Republic where theyassisted villages with construction,gardening, and medical aid.Donations raised provide food andclothing which is distributed tovarious villages during the trip.

E C C S S G I F T S A N D G R A N T SPalumbo Continues to “Help Young People Achieve Their Fullest Potential” Since its formation, Elk County Catholic School System has been the recipient of anannual grant from the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust. The yearly grantsupports students across all of our campuses and grade levels to ensure affordability andaid to all local families seeking a quality Catholic education.

So who is Mr. Palumbo? Many residents of Elk County remember him fondly as a privateand modest man who embodied old-fashioned values. He knew he was very fortunate inhis success and the wealth he acquired from the local coal industry, and felt a great senseof responsibility to give back to those who worked hard. He had the foresight to create aperpetual gift where the spirit of his generosity could live on. In March of each calendaryear, the board of Trustees for the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust gatherto consider and act upon many requests submitted for funding. Consideration is given torequests that encourage hope and vision, especially for children and young adults.

The Elk County Catholic School System is forever grateful for the generosity of Mr.Palumbo. “I believe in education, and the competition is getting keener and keener.You’ve got to prepare,” said Palumbo. In the spirit of Mr. Palumbo, ECCSS is committed toworking hard at preparing our students to achieve their fullest potential! …Thank you tothe A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust Board of Trustees for the opportunityto honor Mr. Palumbo!

McDonald’s MAC Grants Help To Make Activities Count in the Classrooms The students at St. Marys Catholic Middle School are taking the first steps inimproving our environment by setting up and managing a composting factory…WORMS! Funded by a 2018-2019 MAC Grant they were awarded from local St.Marys McDonald’s owner, Eugene Puskash, our middle school students now havethe potential to decrease the 34 million tons of food waste deposited to landfills ayear by 5-8 pounds per week, just by recycling their own daily cafeteria waste.Another benefit of this project is the nutrient rich organic fertilizer these mightyworms produce. And what on earth will the students do with all those wormsthat will be reproduced? Have you ever heard of the St. Leo’s Fishing Derby…LOOK OUT LUCKY LEO!
