Religion

Spanish Armada

● In 1588, Philip II of Spain sent this fleet to fetch his soldiers in the Netherlands and then invade England. Although it was supposed invincible, the Armada was defeated by the English navy.

Women’s Rights

● If women were members of the nobility, they were given an education. Otherwise, they had to stay at home and learn how to run the household.

● They weren’t allowed to go to a university. They were taught only if a tutor went to their home.

● when they married, they had to contribute something which could be any amount of money, goods, or property

● a woman during the Elizabethan era was expected, perhaps even pressured, to have and raise children.

The Globe

● The original Globe Theatre stood in Southwark, London, on the south bank of the River Thames.

● The Globe was built in 1559● It burnt down in 1613, was rebuilt the following year and

then demolished in 1644.● The Globe was an open air theatre, with three floors and

could seat about 3,000 people.● Shakespeare was a part owner of the Globe Theatre, and

several of his plays were performed there.● Advertising was also important in Shakespeare’s day and

the Globe would fly colour-coded flags to indicate what was playing. A black flag meant a tragedy, while a red flag indicated a historical play.

London at the Time

● "Black Death" or bubonic plague affected London. As per her order, anyone who came from London was to be hanged.
