D estination brides have a few extra
things to think about before
shopping for The Dress. Like every bride,
they should first consider the formality—or
informality—of the ceremony, their
budget, body type and personal style. But
brides taking their show on the road also
need to think about portability as well as
practicality for the climate and site.
We asked Valerie and Stephanie Chin,
lead designers at Val Stefani and Moon-
light Bridal, for their thoughts on finding
the perfect destination wedding dress for
2015. The fashion-forward duo has
designed gowns for many celebrities,
including recording artist Kesha.
What aspects do you consider when designing for destination weddings? We are always thinking about the type of bride we are designing for when designing
any collection. We see our destination bride as being a little more adventurous than a
stay-at-home bride and wanting a gown that reflects that part of her personality. We
know that some want to match their dresses to the character of their destinations. That’s
all right for them, of course. But we don’t think style should be sacrificed due to the
location—the bride should still feel like a bride and wear a gown that reflects her style.
How do you address the need for a gown that travels well, is comfortable and suits the destination? We design using lightweight fabrics, delicate lace and beaded accents. Chiffon
and organza are the perfect lightweight fabrics to allow for carefree movement.
They don’t wrinkle easily and don’t cling to the body. They keep you cool, look
pretty in a breeze and are simple to steam once you take them out of a garment
bag. Also, we love to see the use of color, especially blush tones on brides. For an
outdoor or destination wedding, it is the perfect complement.

Are there any new bridal trends that you think work well for destination weddings? We have been using a lot of color in our latest collections—and featuring amazing
back detailing. We think brides want to make a statement when they first walk
down the aisle—and when they exit. So we are focusing on low V-neck backs as
well as keyhole backs. We are also playing with lengths, whether it is a tea-length
or a high-low hem. This is another feature that allows brides to have their personal
style reflected in their gown. It works particularly well if they are looking for a
vintage- or retro-inspired style.
Do you have any other wardrobe or beauty tips for destination brides? We think a birdcage or simple tulle veil makes a nice complement to any gown.
Beyond that, use accessories you love to complete your look. Also, it’s a good idea
to keep an emergency kit with blotting paper, a fan and makeup for quick touchups
nearby. That way you can be stress free about your looks and always camera ready.
But above all, have fun—nothing makes a bride more beautiful than having fun.

Y our wedding palette radiates a special mood
and ties everything together, from save-the-
dates to invitations, fl owers, bridal party attire and
favors. So, where should destination brides begin
when faced with a whole universe of colors,
neutrals, tints and blends? It may sound overwhelm-
ing, but don’t worry, says Heidi Markgraf, who keeps
her fi nger fi rmly on the pulse of bridal trends—with
a special eye for color—and blogs for the online
arm of MagnetStreet, a creator of custom wedding
stationery. “A typical color scheme contains only
two, maybe three, main colors; and one, maybe two,
accents.” That’s a suggested minimum of only three
colors and a maximum of fi ve.
Start with your real-life preferences—the shades
you love to wear and have in your home—then think
about the vibe you want to resonate throughout the
big day, recommends Markgraf. Next, consider the
existing decor of the venue. “You don’t want your
table linens clashing with the carpet,” she says.
Finally, for inspiration, it’s Hello, Pinterest! Search
examples of the mood you’re going for with
keywords like “boho beach wedding,” “luxe island
wedding” or “elegant winter wedding.”
Among today’s most fashionable color combos,
you’ll fi nd elegant neutrals and metallic tones
paired with softer pastels; charcoal paired with
minty green; and “turquoise and cobalt blue paired
with a bright and cheerful yellow,” notes Markgraf.
When it comes to the hottest shade for 2015,
Pantone has declared marsala Color of the Year. “I’ll
be excited to see this classy neutral woven through
weddings all year long,” Markgraf says. “I imagine it
paired with olive or hunter green and blush pink—
pure romance for a destination wedding.”

W hen it comes to fitness, there
are no shortcuts. Although,
according to seasoned trainers
Jason Keigher and Jennifer Cohen,
most brides look for a quick fix.
“Everybody always wants to lose
weight fast,” says Cohen, who has
worked with hundreds of brides and
grooms throughout her career and
once hosted a TV show called
Shedding for the Wedding. “The
trick is to create a fitness plan that
works with your lifestyle so you
can maintain it over time—not
just for the wedding day.” She
adds, “It takes hard work and
consistency to get results.
And you have to have realistic
expectations.”
So where and when to begin?
“The sooner you start working
out with a trainer, the better,”
says Keigher, who helps as many
as 30 brides and grooms each
year. “Six months is ideal, but
you can still see great results in
as little as 12 weeks.” You can typically lose between six to eight
pounds per month in a healthy way, adds Cohen, so you work
backwards to see what the person can properly achieve in the
given time frame.
No matter how soon you get started, Keigher recommends
a combination of exercise methods. “My clients do spinning,

HEALTHY HABITS What you put in your body is even more important than what you put on it. That’s the message behind Mareya Ibraham’s The Clean Eating Handbook ($4.99,

45-60 minutes daily (one day is active rest), and they meet
with me one to three times a week for an intense weight-
training regimen.”
Cohen is also a fan of cross-training for its effectiveness in
preventing plateaus. “I love to incorporate High Intensity
Interval Training (HIIT) into the workout regimen as it’s the best
way to lose body fat.” Just don’t overdo it, she notes. “Doing
HIIT once or twice per week is enough.” Exercise at least five
times per week, even if it’s just going for a brisk, 20-minute walk,
she says.
Of course, what you eat and drink is crucial, too. Clean eating
is a must, 80 percent of the time, Cohen says. “Eat foods that have
a high water content, such as jicama, apples and salad—they keep
you feeling full longer.” Also choose food rich in omega 3s as
they’re a natural anti-inflammatory and great for the skin, she
recommends. “Always have healthy snacks handy, like KIND bars,
which are made of whole foods and taste delicious.”
Stay clear of processed foods, alcohol and sugary drinks—any-
thing that has more than 10 grams of sugar per serving, suggests
Keigher. “Brides should be drinking water exclusively,” he says,
continuing, “For some brides I recommend joining Weight
Watchers; for others I suggest a personal chef or a food delivery
service like The Fresh Diet.” And never starve yourself, he

living the dreamW as it love or animal
magnetism that
brought Lindsey
Rynk and Andrew Clark to Santa
Barbara, California? You’ll have
to ask Lindsey, a newly minted,
29-year-old veterinarian who
moved to town with her 29-year-
old business-analyst sweetheart
July 3, 2013. Within hours, Andy
got down on one knee in the rose
garden of the Santa Barbara
Mission—and Lindsey said yes.
The lovebirds spent a year
planning their three-day wedding
extravaganza, with the goal of shar-
ing what they love about the city
with friends and family from across
the state, Boston and other East
Coast locations. Their 80 guests
stayed at hotels and rental homes
around town and met for events
that included lunch at a traditional
Mexican restaurant in the Historic
District, wine tasting in the newly
hip Funk Zone, dinner and drinks
at Joe’s Café—a local institution
downtown—and brunch by the
sea at Shoreline Park.
The morning of the wedding,
September 13, 2014, found Lindsey and her bridesmaids sipping
mimosas and having their hair and makeup done at her parents’
rental while Andy and his groomsmen delivered decorations to
the celebration sites. At 3:30 p.m., everyone met at Alice Keck
Park Memorial Gardens, a jewel-like public park, where Andy’s
grandmother, Peggy Clark, led the vows under an arbor while the
guests watched from chairs on the lawn.
Next came margarita toasts at the Sea Center on Stearns
Wharf. A wing of the city’s natural history museum, the center’s
soaring walls of glass take in stunning views of the ocean, harbor,
beach, town and mountains.
After oohing and aahing over
the views—and touchable tanks
of live sharks, crabs and other
local sea creatures—everyone
regrouped outside to enjoy the quintessential Santa Barbara
feast, everything from Santa Maria–style tri-tip to jalapeño mac
and cheese, garlic bread with salsa and locally produced wines,
beer and ice cream.
Then, “Our dance music included a little bit of everything,”
Lindsey says. “We wanted everyone to get up and dance.” And
they did, on the wharf, almost till midnight.
Was the weekend up to Lindsey’s expectations? “It exceeded
them!” she says. Everyone fell head over heels for Santa Barbara
and told her and Andrew it was one of the best weddings ever.

T aira Hall, 35, and Omer
Atesmen, 37, traveled
parallel paths for many
years without meeting. They
graduated from Stanford Univer-
sity, lived for a time in London
and New York, had mutual friends
and even consulted for the same
businesses—at separate times.
Their paths did cross briefly while
attending the same graduate
school, but they were dating
other people.
Four years later, at the sugges-
tion of a friend, Omer contacted
Taira through Facebook. That led
to talks on the phone—she was a
financial services executive living
in New York and he a CEO/
entrepreneur in LA—and a date
at his ten-year Stanford reunion.
“We were inseparable from that
first date,” Taira says, “and knew
we were meant to be.”
They went from Facebook to
engagement in only four months.
But where to wed? They spent
several weeks searching the
Caribbean, but couldn’t find
anything to match their vision.
They were about to give up when Omer’s mom mentioned a
spot she’d seen during a cruise in Mexico. It was the St. Regis
Punta Mita Resort, just up the coast from Puerto Vallarta. One
look, and that was it.
The resort and Puerto Vallarta wedding planner Leslie Frausto
set to work bringing Taira and Omer’s vision to life: three days of
parties and activities meant to solidify the bonds between the
couple and 79 friends and family. The festivities began with a
champagne welcome and went on to include a Mexican buffet
on the beach (complete with
mariachis and photo booth),
sea kayaking, playtime at the
pool and viewing the Marieta
Islands offshore.
The wedding itself began at
6 p.m. on May 14, 2011, when
everyone gathered on the beach to the strains of a harpist playing
Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Rev. Lynn Rogers led the vows under a
simple white canopy, followed by high-fives and a shower of pink
petals as the newlyweds left the aisle. Next came cocktails, dinner
and dancing near the pool and an after-party near the beach.
“It was the best day of our lives,” Taira says unequivocally.
What’s more, she and Omer cherish the bonds made with their
St. Regis hosts, who welcomed them back for their anniversary
last year.
“WE WERE INSEPARABLE from our first date and knew we were
meant to be.”

C hristine Dunn and Keith
Jacobs planned their
wedding to cap off a
26-day holiday in the Bahamas.
Already longtime sweethearts at
the age of 22 and 24 respectively,
the couple from Cochrane,
Alberta, Canada, knew and loved
the islands from stays at his
parents’ vacation home. Memories
of the most beautiful beach they’d
ever seen drew them to the
Bahama Beach Club on Treasure
Cay, part of the Abaco chain of Out
Islands, where they tied the knot
July 19, 2012.
Fifty guests joined them at the
behest of formal invitations—
paired with personalized destina-
tion brochures and a wedding
website. Like the couple, most of
the guests stayed in condos at the
resort. A welcome dinner kicked
things off, followed by an all-day
party aboard a double-decker dive
boat crewed by Froggies Out
Island Adventures.
Massage for the ladies and golf
for the gentlemen preceded the
main event. At 5 p.m., everyone
regrouped on the beach and
Christine’s dad, John, sang “Over
the Rainbow” to an acoustic guitar. Then Christine, in an off-white
gown by Pronovias, and Keith, in a tan suit by Armani, exchanged
vows under an arch formed by palm fronds and bougainvillea.
The attendants’ lime-green boutonnieres, sizzling-hot pink
dresses and lime and magenta bouquets painted a veritable
carnival of color against the backdrop of bright-white sand and
turquoise sea.
Earlier, everyone in the bridal party helped Christine decorate
the club’s Pavilion with flowers
from a local garden. The resort
took care of the feast—an
awesome spread of Bahamian
dishes served buffet style.
Christine admits to one glitch in
her DIY plan. She forgot about
a cake till the last minute, and
ended up buying one from a
grocery store. “It was sad,” she
recalls. “It looked like a birthday
cake—but it tasted amazing!”
When the sun left the scene somewhere between dinner and
dancing, everyone went back to the beach to launch the 100
paper sky lanterns Christine had brought along. Just as the last
few lanterns began to float from sight, a full-blown fireworks
display exploded in the sky. Christine’s mom, Donna, had
arranged for the show—“which was amazing,” Christine says,
“her gift to us.”

C hristine Dunn and Keith
Jacobs planned their
wedding to cap off a
26-day holiday in the Bahamas.
Already longtime sweethearts at
the age of 22 and 24 respectively,
the couple from Cochrane,
Alberta, Canada, knew and loved
the islands from stays at his
parents’ vacation home. Memories
of the most beautiful beach they’d
ever seen drew them to the
Bahama Beach Club on Treasure
Cay, part of the Abaco chain of Out
Islands, where they tied the knot
July 19, 2012.
Fifty guests joined them at the
behest of formal invitations—
paired with personalized destina-
tion brochures and a wedding
website. Like the couple, most of
the guests stayed in condos at the
resort. A welcome dinner kicked
things off, followed by an all-day
party aboard a double-decker dive
boat crewed by Froggies Out
Island Adventures.

M adeline Boles would
have to invite at least
600 guests if she
married in her hometown of
Odessa, Texas. The same goes for
her fiancé David Scofield, who
grew up in Wilmington, Delaware.
The solution? Keep the guest list
short by holding the wedding in
Hawaii. “We invited family and
best friends only,” Madeline says.
“We didn’t want to feel guilty if we
couldn’t talk to everyone—we
wanted to relax and have fun.” So
the couple, both 33 and both
veterinarians, left their busy lives
on the eastern shore of Maryland
to tie the knot on Kauai.
For ten days of the two-week
getaway, they chilled out in a
condo at Hanalei Colony Resort,
where Madeline vacationed with
her family as a teenager. “I wanted
to get married in Hanalei since my
first visit,” she says. “It’s my
favorite place on earth.” Their 50
guests—who flew in from London,
the East Coast and several
Western states—stayed at the St.
Regis Princeville Resort and
condos on the north shore.
Pre-wedding, the couple shuttled
everyone to the south shore and hosted cocktails at the legend-
ary Beach House.
Then, on Friday, September 19, 2014, they awoke to a sunny
morning at the St. Regis. While Dave hung out with his pals,
Madeline had brunch with her best friend and met her mom at
the spa for hair and makeup. A sudden downpour almost washed
away plans for a 5 p.m. beachside wedding. But the rain stopped
in time and, Madeline says, she “loved the calming, cleansing feel
it gave everything.”
The entourage gathered in
Kamani Cove, where St. Regis
wedding specialist Ashlee
Libbrecht and floral designer
Martin Roberts had worked their
magic. The couple wanted simple
to the max—no attendants and
only white orchids as a border and
hanging from the kamani trees. A local guitarist played classical
and island tunes, and Rev. Larry LaSota incorporated several
Hawaiian prayers.
For the celebration, the couple pulled out all the stops and
ordered the St. Regis Luau—a truly fabulous feast of authentic
Hawaiian dishes. Everyone dined and then danced on the Bay
Terrace long into the night—with Bali Hai across the water for
a backdrop.

dream destinations just a short distance
away. Among these stateside havens,
California has it all, from bustling cities
and world-class wine country to striking
coastlines, mountains and deserts.
Florida means heaven on earth for lovers
of sun-kissed days and moonlit nights, palm-
lined seascapes and pulsing city streets. Romance

For those dreaming of an island

spa facility, mark a new chapter in this
National Historic Landmark’s proud legacy.

When it comes to weddings, the resort
is reserved exclusively for bridal parties
that book the entire property for their

hillside, in the shade of a sycamore grove
or on a wood deck overlooking the lake.
Lakeside receptions are as popular as
celebrations in one of the Western-
inspired indoor venues.
In the heart of Central California’s Santa
Ynez Valley, just north of Santa Barbara,
The Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort is the
perfect place for bridal couples who
appreciate just the right mix of outdoor
adventure and rustic elegance.
A full-service resort and working cattle
ranch, the 10,000-acre retreat—voted one

West” by Sunset magazine—offers
horseback riding, mountain biking and
hiking adventures through vast plains and
canyons. The Alisal is also home to a
pristine lake, inviting days of fi shing,
canoeing and bird watching.
After a day in the great outdoors,
couples in love can retreat to the spa, the
newest addition to the 72-year-old resort,
to relax with a pampering therapy,
ensuring they’ll feel rested and ready for
the next day’s adventures.
