2. Introduction
The overall aim of ELIPTIC was to develop new concepts and business cases to optimise existing electric infrastructure and rolling stock use, saving both money and energy. ELIPTIC advocates electrification of the public transport sector and helps to develop political support for the electrification of public transport across Europe.
ELIPTIC looks at three thematic pillars:
Pillar A: Safe integration of ebuses into existing electric PT infrastructure through (re)charging ebuses “en route”, upgrading trolleybus networks with battery buses or trolley-hybrids and automatic wiring/de-wiring technology;
Pillar B: Upgrading and/or regenerating electric public transport systems (flywheel, reversible substations);
Pillar C: Multi-purpose use of electric public transport infrastructure: safe (re)charging of non-public transport vehicles (pedelecs, electric cars/ taxis, utility trucks).
With a strong focus on end users, ELIPTIC analysed 20 use cases within the three thematic pillars. The project supported the Europe-wide uptake and exploitation of results by developing strategies and guidelines, decision making support tools (e.g. option generator) and policy recommendations for implementation schemes for upgrading and/or regenerating electric public transport systems. Partners and other cities have benefited from ELIPTIC's stakeholder involvement and user forum approach. ELIPTIC addresses the challenge of “transforming the use of conventionally fuelled vehicles in urban areas” by focusing on increasing the capacity of electric public transport, reducing the need for individual travel in urban areas and by expanding electric intermodal options (e.g. linking e-cars charging to tram infrastructure) for long-distance commuters. The project strengthens the role of electric public transport, leading to both a significant reduction in fossil fuel consumption and to an improvement in air quality through reduced local emissions.

3. Networking objectives
The overall aim of the ELIPTIC networking framework was to establish key relationships between ELIPTIC and similar projects and initiatives within the field of electric mobility at international, European, national and regional/local level. As electric mobility deployment is progressing all over Europe and many multi-lateral initiatives are already established, it was important to network with a European audience and each level of governance had different stakeholders which ELIPTIC needed to tie with. Therefore, the project adopted a cross-level networking approach to build relationships, exchange on expertise and monitor electric public transport deployment across Europe.
During ELIPTIC there have been numerous projects and initiatives established within the field of electric mobility that provided ELIPTIC with the opportunity to create key relationships and optimize the project’s activities and results. The liaison allowed ELIPTIC to build relationships with all of the different actors in the electric mobility sector and create new synergies amongst them. By working together, different projects and initiatives exploring electric mobility in different transport modes can enhance the promotion of the sector to a larger audience. Moreover, connecting with all of the key stakeholders in the sector can foster a broad exchange of expertise on the trends of electric public transport systems that can lead to a fuller understanding of the status quo and future trend of the sector. A key networking objective of ELIPTIC was to therefore identity relevant projects and initiatives within the sector and build durable relationships and identifying activities to work in parallel on.

4. Events
Both organization of and participating to external events helps to spread the word about ELIPTIC and establish it as a recognizable brand. The ELIPTIC Consortium has been very active in this area, which can be seen in the Events Tracker (Annex 1). This table helps to record the presence of the project at local, national and international events, together with the size and type of the audience.
4.1 Events organised by ELIPTIC
The ELIPTIC project has organized 15 events. The start of ELIPTIC was marked with the Launch Event, organized on 2-3 June 2015 in Brussels. The kick-off meeting was an international event and included a presentation by the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency Project Officer, Walter Mauritsch, and a setting of the policy context by José Fernandez Garcia from DG MOVE and Paul Beeckmans, from the Greens in the European Parliament as well as some greeting words from Michael Cramer, at that time chair of European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism. official welcome address by the Senator for Environment, Construction and Transport Dr. Joachim Lohse and Hajo Müller, CEO and COO of BSAG.
Figure 2: Launch of the first electric bus in Bremen
An example for an excellent international event is the UITP-Busworld International Bus Conference (23-25 October 2017 in Kortrijk, Belgium) which held the Research & Innovation Day, i.e. a workshop with ELIPTIC, ZeEUS and other relevant Bus Projects. The event gathered more than 200 stakeholders from EU institutions, industry, academia, and other professionals from the transport sector. The ELIPTIC project presented its achievements and plans related to advanced trolleybus systems and a status updated related to the performance evaluation results. Project Technical Coordinator, Wolfgang Backhaus from Rupprecht Consult presented the achievements and plans of the three ELIPTIC trolleybus cities, Gdynia, Eberswalde and Szeged. While Project Evaluation leader, Antonio Musso from La Sapienza presented a Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats analysis of how ELIPTIC measures interact with the existing electricity grid. All projects contribute to supporting decision-makers in choosing the right solution for their operational scenario and implementing a suitable strategy to reduce urban transport emissions.

D6.8 ELIPTIC Networking Report
The Transport Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting is the world’s largest conference on transportation. It gathers more than 13.000 participants from all over the world in Washington, D.C.. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the European Commission, Directorate General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) organised a joint session “Sharing innovative, tested practices in sustainable urban mobility in EU and US cities”. Participants from EU and US cities, regions, public transport providers, public sector organisations, research organisations and companies exchanged insights of their projects and policies. Robert Missen, Head of Unit in DG MOVE and Martin Knopp, Associate Administrator for FHWA Office of Operations opened the exchange session.
The EU Horizon2020 projects EMPOWER, FLOW, TRACE, CoEXIST and ELIPTIC were invited to share their experiences. Michael Glotz-Richter, working at the City of Bremen and representing the ELIPTIC project coordination, emphasised the approach of sustainable urban transport – going beyond electric cars. As a political output of ELIPTIC, Michael presented the ‘factor 100’ initiative, showing that the electrification of one urban bus has impacts that can be achieved with as many as 100 electric cars, but not receiving similar attention and funding. He presented the use of the ELIPTIC insights for the German political ‘factor 100’ initiative. This initiative put pressure on the national government to start a €100 million annual funding programme for electric buses which will allow the procurement of about 400 – 500 e-buses per year in German cities from 2018 onwards.
From the US, the cities of San Francisco, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C. presented their approaches. It became very obvious that despite some different starting points, the objectives and strategies of American and European cities have many similarities – making a transatlantic exchange very fruitful and inspiring.

7.3 Webinar 3: Experiences from European cities in using electric public transport infrastructure for the charging of other e-vehicles
In the third and final ELIPTIC webinar, which took place on 9 April 2018 from 11:00 to 12:30 CET, some of the lessons learnt within the project were presented.
After a short introduction into the work of the ELIPTIC project and the use cases related to the webinar’s topic (Henning Günter, Rupprecht Consult), the presenters showed different aspects related to the multi-purpose use of electric public transport infrastructure. This included direct insights from two ELIPTIC cities covering both technical aspects in the provision of metro infrastructure for the charging of TfL’s service vehicles (David Talbot, TfL) and planning aspects that need to be taken into consideration when using Barcelona’s metro and tram network for the charging of e-cars (Oscar Puigdollers, B:SM). A final presentation gave insight into the findings looking at e-mobility from an energy law perspective highlighting legal and regulatory challenges that were encountered within the project (Hartwig von Bredow, von Bredow Valentin Herz).
The recording of the webinar can be accessed here and all presentation are available on the ELIPTIC website. For more information, see Deliverable 5.5.
Throughout all ELIPTIC activities, it can be observed that networking activities are intertwined with dissemination activities. The ELIPTIC dissemination activities played a key role in enhancing the ELIPTIC network as they raised higher interest among the ELIPTIC target groups. All the activities such as events, workshops, user forum and webinars extensively included networking partners. Hence, interconnectedness between ELIPTIC dissemination activities and the ELIPTIC network provided a successful framework with a large impact. The success of ELIPTIC networking is also reflected in the success of the ELIPTIC dissemination activities (please see D6.6 Dissemination Report) and further initiatives that ELIPTIC initiated.
With over 127 networking events such as conferences, workshops and exhibitions attended. Five User Forum meetings organised. Three Thematic Workshops and three Webinars organised. Networking for the ELIPTIC project can be considered successful in achieving the set project objectives to foster knowledge transfer and networking for exchange of experience and to actively support the take-up of business cases and exploitation of project results across Europe.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 636012.
