Introduction

Elijah Friend was born, lived and died at Sang Run, MD. Elijah Friend was the

grandson of John Friend Sr. (1728 to aft 1808), founder of Friendsville, MD, and the

tenth child of John Friend Jr. (1764 to 1849) and Elizabeth Ward (1778 to 1845). Elijah

Friend’s life was tragically cut short at the age of fifty-five years in a barn raising

accident. At the time of his death, Elijah Friend was a businessman, a land-owner,

husband of Elizabeth Smith and father of nine children. Elizabeth Smith out lived her

husband by another twenty-eight years. Both Elijah and Elizabeth were buried beside

each other in the family cemetery at Sang Run, MD.

Elijah and Elizabeth’s children remained close, living in and around the Sang

Run, Hoyes Run and Friendsville Areas of Garrett County, Maryland for the remainder of

their lives. They appeared to function as a close-knit family. They bought and sold land

as a group from 1871 into the mid 1920’s. They purchased land next to one another and

shared their homes and property. The children of Elijah Friend were primarily farmers.

Joseph H. Friend, Elijah Friend’s first child, was born in 1839. Joseph H. Friend went to

war, serving in the Union Army (3rd Regiment, Co. D, MD Infantry) during the American

Civil War. The remainder of Elijah Friend’s children led relatively peaceful lives. Many

of their children left the Sang Run Area, yet returned years later to their childhood

homes. The births, lives and deaths of Elijah Friend’s family have influenced the Sang

Run, MD area for over a hundred years.

Unfortunately, we have found no personal descriptions of Elijah or his wife. We

have attempted to reveal Elijah Friend’s life and his descendents through public records

(family Bibles, marriage records, photographs, US Census, land deeds and family

histories), many which were obtained from the Friend Family Association of America

(FFAA) Library. This book is a continuation of Pat Thompson’s John Friend Sr. of

Friendsville, MD and Pat Smith’s John Friend Jr. of Sang Run, MD (2007). We have

attempted to chronicle the life of Elijah Friend and his descendents in order to preserve

this information.

Allegany County Land Records Book BB Pages 130-131 At the request of Elijah Friend this deed was recorded December 15th, 1840. This Indenture made this thirtieth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty between John Mattingly of Allegany County in the State of Maryland and Nancy, his wife, of the one part and Elijah Friend of said County and State of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Mattingly and Nancy, his wife have for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand dollars current money of the United States to them in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, given, granted, bargained and sold, aliened, and offered, released, conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do give, grant, bargain 7 Elijah Friend’s family acted as a close-knit group after his death. Many of the land deals involved every son and daughter. Thus, the Land Deeds which involve all entire family are initially recorded in this section. Those deeds will be cited in the appropriate places for each child.

and sell, alien and offer, release, convey and confirm unto the said Elijah Friend, his heirs and assign part of the two tracts of land, the one called "Limestone" resurveyed for John Swan and patented to him and the other called "The Gleanings" resurveyed for Paul Hoye and patented to him lying in said county and state being the same parcel of land heretofore to conveyed to the said John Mattingly by Dominick Mattingly of said county and state and Anne Mattingly his wife by their deed bearing the date on the twentieth day of December in the year eighteen hundred and thirty six and recorded among the land records of Allegany County in Liber A.B. No. F folio 19, 20 & 21. Beginning at a bounded hickory the beginning of a tract of land called "Friend's Delight" and running thence North thirty eight degrees East, one hundred and thirty perches, North seventy nine degrees East three perches to intersect a line drawn South forty degrees East from the end of the first line of "Friend's Delight" and with said line South forty degrees East fifty three perches to a lime sugar (tree) and beach standing in the "Sugar Camp" seen a corner to John Hoyes deed to Meshack Browning and with the lines of said deed North eighty eight degrees East nineteen perches to a large red oak the beginning of said deed and with the lines of said deed connected North seventy three degrees and three quarters of a degree East twenty six perches to a small black walnut at the end of the fourth line of Lot Number one thousand four hundred and seventy three (1473), then South thirty four degrees East fifty six perches and a half , then leaving the outlines and running across said land with the lines of Dominick Mattingly, part of said land reversed South forty six degrees West sixty three perches North fifty six degrees West thirty perches and a half, South thirty one degrees West thirty six perches to a corner of "The Gleanings" on the bank of the river and with said land North Seventy six degrees West forty four perches, North fifty five degrees West eighteen perches than by a straight line to the beginning containing eighty one acres and one fourth of an acre (81 1/4 acres) more or less together with all and singular the rights, privileges, members, advantages and appurtenances thereto belonging so or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land and premises both mentioned and described with every the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining unto him the said Elijah Friend, his heirs and assigns and to and for the only purpose, use, benefit and behoof of him the said Elijah Friend, his heirs and assigns and to and for no other use intent or purpose, whatsoever. And the said John Mattingly and for himself and his heirs doth hereby covenant promise and agree to and with the said Elijah Friend, his heirs and assigns that he the said John Mattingly and his heirs and assigns the tract or parcel of land and premises above described and herein mentioned to be granted, bargained and sold with the appurtenances unto the said Elijah Friend , his heirs and assigns shall and will warrant and forever defend by those present against the claim of all person or persons claiming in any manner by from under or in trust for the said John Mattingly or his heirs.

Obituary of Alta Virginia (Friend) Hoffman, daughter of Richard E. Friend TERRA ALTA, W.Va. Alta Virginia Hoffman, 82, of Terra Alta, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at her residence. Born on April 14, 1918, in St. George, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Alice (Friend) Friend. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, James H. Solomon and Kelly Hoffman. Surviving are three sons, Wallace Solomon of North East, Pa., Mark Solomon of Swanton, Md., Sherwood Soloman and wife Joyce of Oakland, Md.; six daughters, Ada Bishop of Richmond, Va., Barbara Dawson and Joyce Simmons and husband Charles of Elk Garden, Judy Pace of Kentucky, Doraine Moreland of Romney, Sandra Moreland husband Phillip of Terra Alta; one brother, Darl Friend of Crellin; four sisters, Jane Frayley of Somerset, Pa., Olive Slagle of Terra Alta, Alice Wilkins of Mount Lake Park, Md., Lou Hinebaugh and husband Jack of Deer Park, Md.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The body is at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the Elk Garden Church of God on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Byron Mayberry officiating. Interment will be in the Kalbaugh Cemetery, Elk Garden.

The state police were brought in to direct traffic and the people at the Scarpelli funeral home said the had not seen the like.

About the Authors

Patricia Ann (Friend) Thompson was born and raised in Garrett County,

Maryland. Pat is a descendant of John Friend Sr., through his sons John Jr. and Charles.

Patricia is also a descendant of numerous established Garrett County families such as

Enlow, Harvey, Tasker, Murphy, Upole and Thrasher. Pat is a Life Member (#889) of

the FFAA, currently serving as 1st Vice President of the organization. Pat is a member (#

854484) of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution,

Youghiogheny Glades Chapter (through John Friend Sr.) and a member of The Swedish

Colonial Society. Pat’s first book on the Friends of Garrett County, Maryland was “John

Friend Sr. of Friendsville, MD” (2007) which chronicled the life of Elijah Friend’s

grandfather. Pat’s second book on the Garrett County Friends, written with Pat Smith,

focused on Cornelius Ward Friend, brother of Elijah. Pat currently lives in Frederick

County, Maryland with husband, John (Scoop) Thompson and their three dogs.

Patrick T. Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in Western

Maryland. Patrick is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.), West Virginia

University (M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Dr. Smith currently works at the

National Institutes of Health at Bethesda, Maryland as a research chemist. Dr. Smith’s

first book on the Garrett County Friends centered on the maps and paper of William H.H.

Friend (2006). His second book (2007) on the Garrett County Friends focused on John

Friend Jr., father of Elijah Friend. Dr. Smith has a vested interest in this project, for he is

the 3x great grandson of Elijah Friend. Dr. Smith is currently the 2nd Vice President of

the FFAA as well as a Life Member (#1102). Dr. Smith lives in Frederick, Maryland with

his wife, Roxanne and daughter Emma Gustav Smith.
