Foote remarked that the original lists were difficult to read. In fact Foote’s transcriptions are also difficult to interpret. An effort has been made to be as accurate as possible. Brackets [ ] indicate information supplied by the editor. Often this is a name difficult to decipher in Foote’s original handwriting. There may be additional records at the National Archives, such as pay master lists, correspondence, and pension records. More research is needed. In 1852, Elial Todd Foote, noted Jamestown and Chautauqua
County historian received permission from President Fillmore and the
Secretary of War to examine and make a copy of the officers and
soldiers of the eight companies representing the newly formed
Chautauqua County.
Foote remarked that the original lists were difficult to read. In
fact Foote’s transcriptions are also difficult to interpret. An effort has
been made to be as accurate as possible. Brackets [ ] indicate
information supplied by the editor. Often this is a name difficult to
decipher in Foote’s original handwriting.
There may be additional records at the National Archives, such as
pay master lists, correspondence, and pension records. More research

Lieut. Commandant Alexander makes the certificate of the correctness of the Returns “on honor” –Discharged at Hamburg “shore of Lake Erie, Niagara Frontier 3 Feb 1814.”
I believe I have not copied any as deserted but those that appear so on the roll, but some were probablymarked as deserted as ditto thus “ but written [blind] I did not copy 50 (or so).
The payroll was made at Portland by Samuel Perry, Paymaster, 4 January 1816. In most cases when mennot entered as deserters recpt & its amount signed on voucher.

It will be seen that nearly all the deserters were in the company of _____1813‐1814. When the soldiers had nothing to do, had no quarters or tents orcomfortable rations & at inclement season and then went home boldly with theknowledge of the officers, without oppositions, although with their consent.
