PGI's client, Surabhi Bamboo Pvt Ltd, Madras, India is a company engaged in the manufacture and trade of environmentally friendly international standard engineered building materials made from bamboo as a raw material. One of its available product platforms is a bamboo composite prefabricated structure designed to replace the current line of temporary disaster relief shelters with climate & geographic appropriate, renewable healthy material, cost and labor efficient, re-allocatable permanent shelter assets. Product Validation: The product has the full support and backing and recommendation of the Government of India, National Mission for Bamboo Application and Department of Science and Technology that has underwritten the accreditation of the product viz., laboratory and field data testing (below), to achieve its international building standard and application. The product has been deployed by the Government of India during the 2004 tsunami in the Andamans and Sri Lanka, the landslides of Jammu & Kashmir and as permanent comfort homes to hundreds of families in 15 North, Central and North East States of India. Product Overview: • Scalable Modular Construction from IS- 5509/IS-476 certified plyboard; designed to BIS- 4990-1981, IS-13958 defined specifications. • Lab and field tested to withstand sustained <150kmph wind. • Earthquake resistant design and performance. • Roof load certified to 1 meter snow; cloudburst. • 30 year usable life. Waterproof, IS fire resistant, fungus proof, insulated sandwich panel construction. Suitable long-term permanent shelter solution. • Tensile and twist strength double that of wood. (Total tensile 588 kn/m2 (16mm ply) • Lightweight, more cost effective in comparison to conventional construction & materials. • No technical skill necessary; easy to stage and assemble in 4 hours with standard tools. Can be as easily disassembled, reassembled, rededicated. • Custom configuration and aesthetics for families, administrative offices, outposts, barracks, etc. • XF unit cost of $10USD psf (excl. packaging); lightweight modular design results in low carbon footprint, multi-modal logistic capability and efficient deployment in theatre.
