Corus Colors
Pre-finished steel
Electrolux Case Study
Further advantage
With the supply of pre-finished steel now in place
Electroluxcontinued to gain further advantage from its relationship
withCorus through the co-development of a product
traceabilitysystem. Unique barcodes, containing coil identities and
otherinformation are given to each pallet of material.
The system's real value comes when products are delivered
toElectrolux, who scan the barcodes into their systems as andwhen
they use each pallet of pre-finished steel. Consequently, this
consignment stocking approach keeps an accurate recordof usage
& product history and even facilitates automaticinvoicing as
and when the stock goes through the process.
First class rating
Following the first 6 months of supply, Electrolux haveawarded
Corus Colors with a Q rated supplier classification. This rating can
only be achieved for suppliers who haveconsistently achieved 100%
service levels with no rejectionsor delivery failures.

Motiva™ Hot
Electrolux switches smoothly to pre-finished steel
Electrolux is the world's leading manufacturer of kitchen
andcleaning appliances and equipment, with yearly sales of over55
million products. Its production facility in SpennymoorCounty
Durham, which recently received a £7m investmentpackage is where
the company produces a significantproportion of its free-standing
cooker range.
As part of on-going process improvement at the plant,Electrolux
began considering pre-finished steel as analternative to the
post-painted material it had historically used for cooker
sides.
This innovation came as part of the company's commitment to
constantly improving and streamlining its manufacturingprocesses
and saw Electrolux switch its annual 1,000 tonnespre-finished steel
requirement to Corus.
Aware of the efficiency benefits of using pre-finished
steel,Electrolux began working with Corus to develop a
materialwhich would meet their requirements. They initially
requested aproduct for their white cookers which would be suitable
forpiercing, bending and provide high scratch resistance.
Corusrecommended Motiva™ SE White which met this criteria.
Sector: Domestic Appliances
Distributor: Colorsteels
Corus Products used:
Motiva™ SE from Corus
White and Black
Motiva™ SE from Corus
Motiva SE is a high quality pre-finished steel productconsisting
of a metal substrate with a textured basecoat andenhanced
anti-corrosive properties and a smooth pigmentedtopcoat. The
product combines a structured aesthetic finishwith a smooth touch,
popular in the domestic appliancemarket as well as having very high
scratch resistance.Furthermore, the product is capable of 500 hrs
salt spray oncold reduced steel, which is the result of a recent
innovationproject from Corus.
A further opportunity came soon afterwards when Electrolux, now
benefiting from the additional savings in labour and timefrom using
pre-finished steel, decided to take full advantage ofthe product by
also using it for the black cooker sides of itsincreasingly popular
range of stainless steel fronted cookers.
Recent market trends towards stainless steel and
colourcombinations have required Corus to develop a new finish for
Electrolux. Conscious of the simultaneous need for a highscratch
resistant product, Corus recommended Motiva SEBlack, a textured
high gloss black product.
The Motiva Hot range of pre-finished steel from Corus
isspecially formulated for domestic appliances that havesuperior
heat resistant requirements. These include oveninteriors, external
casings, oven splash backs and microwaveovens. The range of
pre-finished steel from Corus alsoincludes Motiva Cold and Motiva
Wet products.
Electrolux’s Spennymoor plant's conversion from using post-paint
to pre-finished steel progressed smoothly and involvedElectrolux
making only minor tooling modifications to itsequipment.
In terms of supply, Motiva SE white and black is produced
atCorus Colors’ Tafarnaubach site in South Wales. From here, the
material is supplied to distributor Colorsteels, where it isslit
and blanked. The pre-finished steel is then pressed intothe shapes
required for individual cooker models byElectrolux.
Electrolux’s Purchasing Manager Steve Evans stated;
“Electrolux Spennymoor discussed theaesthetic suitability of the
colour andfinish with our sales and marketingteam and in parallel
conducted the fullrange of in house tests on the productfrom Corus
which in both casesresulted in full project sign off.”
