•Electrical professionals can make their workplace safer by following safety regulations, establishing a safety program, and understanding electrical hazards.

•As being Electrical Engineers, we should all know the basics of Electricity & the basic rules for our safety, in Electrical field such as experimental labs.

•It is actually current that kills, not the voltage.

One Of The Basic Example To Understand Electricity

Why Do Birds Sitting On An Electrical Wire Do Not get Shock????

Page 4: Electrical safety principles

THE REASON BEHIND THIS

The Birds on a single phase wire stand on their both feet.

They actually get shock in nano range so they do not feel it.

They are on the same potential, not completing the path of return to the ground.

HAZARDS OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK

•Accidental grounding path from trees which complete the current flow path.

•Two persons contacting different points in a circuit path will result in electric shock to both of them.

•Path for the current to the ground through the dirt.

•High power transmission lines have high currents and hence higher magnetic field .

•High voltage current has the ability to attract upto 18 meters or above.

EFFECTS OF OTHER QUANTITIES Body resistance is not a fixed quantity, it depends on

many conditions and hence varies.

By research , a current of only 17 milliamps is enough for fibrillation (Muscular twitching).

Electrical resistance between any contacting objects becomes smaller with increased contact area.

Only a 12v battery is enough dangerous if it accidentally come in contact across some other hazard.

SAFETY RULES Avoid as much as possible to contact between two different

points in a circuit.

Special insulated shoes are made to protect persons but they must be clean and dry.

While using high voltage machines in laboratory ensure proper and tight connections.

Must power off first and remove all the connected wires from an electrical equipment.

Avoid running extension wires across your doorways.

Do not overload a single phase outlet, otherwise excess power will be drawn

PRECAUTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.

STAY SAFE & HELP OTHERS LEARN SAFETY.
