The Energy Sector Transition From Fossil to Renewable
Source: 2017 DNV GL energy transition outlook – renewables, power, and energy use
The fossil share of the world’s primary energy mix will decline from 81% currently to approx. 50% in 2050
Significant increase ofnenewable
energy sources
Need to deal with the volatile energy sources
Electricity generation will increase rapidly globally
By 2050, well over 80% of the electricity will be
generated by renewable sources.
Solutions needed like
• demand shifting• storage
• sector coupling

Intelligent Hybrid Energy Distribution Systems – and Sector Coupling

▪ Virtual storage (Demand response) is the most cost effective solution. Requires digitalization (Smart grids) and interconnection of the systems (smart energy).
▪ The lowest cost energy storage system is pumped hydro power. Needs a robust grid for long distance transport of electricity.
▪ An effective method to reduce fossil fuels is to use renewable electric power for electromobility and heating & cooling systems with thermal storage.
▪ Battery storage systems are great for peak shaving and short term balancing.
▪ Power-to-gas systems can convert electric power to gas – and back again when needed.
