“Being at college helped me get ready for my interview and I knew what kind of things they would ask me. I don’t think I would have got the job if I hadn’t been at college because it also meant I could take along my work and things I had already made to show off my skills and ability. I am proud to be working for BAE because they are a prestigious company and everyone knows who they are.”Kyle Sweeney, Student

“The Engineering Skills programme was designed to prepare young people for a career in the engineering industry. Rory was very keen to learn and develop new and relevant skills which would help him to progress into an apprenticeship. He excelled at the College and when an apprenticeship opportunity arose at Doosan Babcock, he was quick to apply and progressed through a rigorous application and interview process and was rewarded with an offer of employment.”Glasgow Clyde College

“Being at Glasgow Clyde College made me more independent and mature. When I was at school I used to just mess about, but now I want to work hard. All I wanted was to get an apprenticeship with Doosan Babcock and everything I learned at college has allowed me to do this.”Rory Robertson, Student

“Doosan Babcock were pleased to build on our relationship with Glasgow Clyde College in supporting the Cashback Engineering Skills programme. We felt that it was a good opportunity to share our knowledge and experience of the engineering construction industry and allow young people to make informed decisions on their futures. The fact that two of the participants gained an apprenticeship with Doosan Babcock is a measure of the success of the programme in introducing new people to the sector. There was a good mix of college input with Doosan Babcock supporting by providing employability training, Health & Safety sessions and industry knowledge sessions along with site visits to our own premises. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the College in 2016.”Phil Carruthers,Approved Centre Manager, Doosan Babcock

Local secondary school teachers and pupils attended a series of free and innovative textiles workshops which took take place at Dumfries House, one of Britain’s most beautiful and historic stately homes.

The Future Textiles Programme, which was developed in collaboration with Glasgow Clyde College, Ayrshire College and The Scottish Textiles Academic Group, aimed to raise awareness of employment opportunities within the textiles industry and teach textile-related skills to young people that are living in Scotland. HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, has shown support for the project, which is set to run until January 2016, received funding from Creative Scotland’s Cashback for Creativity.

Fashion and Textiles lecturers from Glasgow Clyde College delivered the workshops, which armed participating teachers with the knowledge needed to confidently relay what they had learned back to their classes and teach school pupils introductory manufacturing skills, which are not currently taught in schools and colleges. Participants took home a finished product they made out of fabric donated by sponsors such as Johnstons of Elgin, Alex Begg & Co and Robert Noble. The initiative is expected to run again in late 2016.

“The local industry currently has 20 textile-related companies and many of them are considering recruiting Modern Apprenticeships. Participation in these workshops will give pupils a greater understanding of industry requirements and the rich heritage of Scottish Textiles. Mastering these traditional skills could make them ideal candidates for employment and apprenticeship opportunities with local textile companies in the future.”Glasgow Clyde College

“The course helped me with all barriers I have always faced, they helped with everything from childcare to transport. Being on my own they won’t realise how much they helped me get back on the ladder. Thank you"Glasgow Clyde College

In response to the Scottish Government’s guarantee of increased levels of childcare, Glasgow City Council decided to approach Glasgow Clyde College to design the First Steps to Childcare course. Glasgow City Council’s bold vision was to fill this imminent staffing shortage whilst simultaneously solving social problems in the city.

The First steps to Childcare course is an innovative programme co-designed and co-delivered to better equip ‘just coping’ parents to understand and meet the learning and development needs of their children and to develop their employment-readiness. Jointly selected by the City Council and the College, each candidate is interviewed to ensure any potential barriers are removed.

• Childcare is secured for all days of the programme by Glasgow City Council. • Successful applicants are given a 4 week induction focusing on confidence building • The teaching day is also organised around family friendly times of 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 03:00 pm• Because the course is part-time it does not interfere with benefits • Lunches and travel are also paid for by Glasgow City Council to remove any possibly penalties for learning• A PVG is paid for by the college • Those who continue with the course will then get work experience in a Partner Nursery• Mentors provided by Glasgow City Council continue to support participants during this time in the workplace.

“I think this course has given me the chance to build a future for myself. It’s given me a chance to do what I have always wanted to do and work with children. I am more confident and I have been able to build new friendships.”

On completion of the units students will have achieved the NPA in Childcare and Playwork which allows the students to gain registration with the SSSC as a support worker or to undertake further study. The most popular progression route though is provided by Glasgow City Council who, for the first time, have created opportunities to in their nurseries to allow some of these students to gain their SVQ in Health and Social Services (Children and Young People) atlevels 2 and 3 – ready to take up Job Opportunities in Childcare for GlasgowCity Council on qualification.

From the initial cohort.• 15 completed the 4 week induction and achieved the Care of Children Unit and gained their PVG – a 100% attainment PI• 14 then signed up for the remaining 16 week NPA award where 13 completed and passed the programme with one dropping out because of personal circumstances – giving a 93% attainment PI• To put this in context, the sector average for attainment for part-time FE courses is 77% and in Glasgow the average is only 65%. In terms of progression these candidates will be well placed to take up permanent employment opportunities and so help meet the Government’s guarantee.

The Carrick Spa, at Cameron House Hotel on the banks of LochLomond, is one of the UK’s most prestigious spas, which offers a wide range of luxury relaxation and beauty therapies over seventeen treatment rooms. It has been awarded Scottish Hotel Spa of the year on no less than three occasions and in 2015 it was announced it was the winner of the World Luxury Spa Award. A reputation like this hangs or falls on the quality of the therapists they can employ and the Carrick Spa has approached Glasgow Clyde College as their preferred supplier of Graduate Beauty Therapy students to work in their spa.

We are delighted to have gained this partnership and it is a credit to the professionalism and high standards of the Beauty Therapy staff that the College has gained the reputation of producing students who can work in such a distinguished and renowned establishment. Initially this partnership focussed on headhunting the very best graduates that Glasgow Clyde College can produce. However, they have now been so impressed with the standards that they are happy to offer paid work to our students whilst in training during their HND Beauty Therapy.

We look forward to a rich and rewarding partnership in the coming years for both the Carrick Spa and our students.

Glasgow Clyde College Cardonald Campus hosted a Microsoft “Test Fest” in conjunction with Microsoft and Prodigy Learning.

Computing students were given an opportunity to sit a Microsoft qualification worth £90, free of charge. In addition to the potential Microsoft Certification they would achieve, the top three scores won prizes of a £50 Amazon voucher, a portable hard disk, and a Raspberry Pi project computer.

Microsoft certification is an optional, world-wide, industry-recognised certification for those pursuing a career path in IT infrastructure, database design or software development using Microsoft technologies. The competition was organised to help students gain this very valuable qualification.

In total 59 Microsoft Technology Associate exam passes were clocked up by the students. A fantastic addition to their SQA qualification.

She worked very hard, through extremely difficult times, always turning up at college with a smile on her face and having time to support others in the class. Determination and hard work enabled her to juggle her health issues with course work and pass all her subjects, and the result is a job she is delighted with. Laura has been with the firm for over two years and has always demonstrated willingness and capacity to acquire new skills and knowledge.
