On Thursday 28th January 2016, Marsden Commu-

nity Primary School based in Nelson held their

Annual ‘Naats Function’ to celebrate ‘Eid Milaad

un Nabi’, the birth of the Holy Prophet Muham-

mad (Peace & Blessings Be Upon Him).

The Annual ‘Naats Function’ is a permanent fix-ture in the calendar for the students of Marsden

Community Primary School who after weeks &

weeks of practice with the help of their teachers

and support from their parents, delivered an

amazing performance to an audience of over 100

people which included family, friends & staff. It

was amazing to see them all perform brilliantly.

It was great to see the enthusiasm and passion

shown by all the students who performed so well

individually and as part of their groups.

On Sunday 6th March 2016, Pendle Community Ra-

dio celebrated Mother’s Day with a special 3 hours

radio show. Hosted by popular PCR presenter

Samina Hussain, the show featured discussion on the

role and importance of mother’s in our lives.

Many of the Awaz 103.1FM listeners also shared

their thoughts about the day via telephone and many

said that mother’s day was to be celebrated today, tomorrow and everyday throughout the year.

One caller said, “Mother’s day is not & should not only be celebrated on one day. We should cele-

brate mother’s day everyday, every hour, every minute and every second”.

Mother’s are a great blessing and we should make

it our obligation to look after them, keep them

happy and keep them smiling at all times.

Many listeners who no longer have their mother’s

also participated in the show & echoed their sad-

ness & emotions of no longer having their

mother’s with them. They told of the emptiness

they felt and the importance of not taking your

mother’s for granted. We should always remem-

ber the status of a mother and show them the respect and love they deserve, no matter how old they

get it’s our duty and responsibility to be there for them always.

We would like to thank talented nasheed artist Ismail Hussain from Bradford who despite his busy

schedule joined the show via telephone and read poetry

praising mother’s. Also a big thank you to all the young guests

who participated in the show. We pray that all of our mothers

are blessed with a long & healthy life and those mothers who

are no longer with us are granted a place in Paradise.

On Wednesday 20th  March 2016, a true gentle-

men of the community and much loved personal-

ity, Abdul Hamid Piracha sadly passed away at the

age of 93 in Blackburn after an illness.

Abdul Hamid Piracha was an active person and

always enjoyed participating in community events.

He was a regular caller on Pendle Community Ra-

dio and appeared on various Pakistan Day &

Quaid-e-Azam remembrance radio shows. It was

always a privilege to listen to what he had to say

and to meet him in person. Abdul Hamid Piracha

had a great personality and was very soft spoken.

PCR presenter & host of the ‘Aap Ki Sehat’ Health

show Shakil Salam said, “He was very active all his

life and always valued education and health. He

was a very passionate person and until his illness

he was still involved with several community

groups. I worked with him when he was chair of

the Ethnic Minority Health and Social Care Forum.

The group looked at the health and well-being of

the community. He was really committed and was

    always there despite his age.”

The same sentiments have been echoed by many

of his friends that despite his age he was active.

The management, presenters & volunteers of Pen-

dle Community Radio - Awaz 103.1FM would like

to offer our sincere condolences to the family ofAbdul Hamid Piracha and pray that Allah the Al-

As my grandfather is now alone I have to balance my social, work and family life accord-

ing to my grandfather's needs but as a community, we do care for our parents as it is a

tradition and our religious duty to look after our elders.

As I boarded the plane from Manchester I left the crisp, numbing weather behind me

and looked forward to the hot climate ahead. I remember sitting silently on the plane in

the evening and as soon as the doors opened the heat hit me like I was in an oven. Soon

after I was going through immigration (Qatar) where there was a very long queue of far

eastern workers surrounding me. Most of them were migrant workers who lived in

Qatar who had left their families back home. Whilst I was there I met a lovely Philippine

worker who I was talking to in the queue and I asked him what do you do and why have

you come to Qatar and he replied in a soft tone that he works as a nurse in Qatar but

back home he looks after family, he left his family in Philippines and he couldn't wait to

see his family for Christmas. He looks after ten members of his family and he was show-

ing me pictures of his family one by one with a tear trickling down his cheek. He then

asked me what I was doing in Qatar and I told him that I was on a break in Qatar before

flying to India to see my grandfather, I then showed him pictures of my family and came

to realise that he had another tear in his eyes. I realised then that we are so lucky to be in this country (UK) and looking

after our families because the man from Philippines had to travel half way around the world to make some money and not

able to be with his family but support them financially. This inspired me to look after my grandfather more and enjoy my

first four days in Qatar alone.

Next I was on my way to India. Once I landed in India I made my way North of India to a place called Bharuch which isGujarat where I was reunited with my grandfather and other relatives. It was exciting to spend time with my grandfather

and bring him back home to the UK. During my visit in India it was heart warming to see many families and young children

supporting their parents and elderly grandparents, which made me think that we are slowly losing this tradition and our

value in regards to our elders. As I was in India I met a 102 year old lady who was looked after by her 75 year old son,

who told me "Whatever you do in life, look after your elders as one day you will be old too, so take care of your elders

because whatever goes around comes around."

As we are reading this column, whether at home, or at university, or where ever, ask yourself are we playing our role in

supporting our parents or grandparents? Sometimes we say that we will look after them tomorrow or next week, but who

knows if our parents will be alive tomorrow or our grandparents. I think it's important for all of us as a community to

make sure we look after our elders, especially our family members and remember life is too short. Everyone has time to

look after our families and if you have any elderly grandparents or parents then take some time out to pay them a visit on

a daily basis. Since I lost my grandmother, my grandfather is now

alone and sometimes loneliness is not healthy for the elderly, they

    cannot look after themselves.

I have changed my lifestyle where I am now giving more hours to

support my grandfather. So those of you who are not looking after

your grandparents you need to understand that they should not be

alone, they need love and support or one day you will wake up to

find that one of your grandparent or the last grandparent you hadhas passed and you will regret not spending every minute of every

day with them so cherish them the way they do with you.
