An oppo- nent both of the Assad regime and the Islamist insurgency, he recently ed Syria with his family. He describes this poem, a dialogue with Dante’s Divine Comedy written after his arrival as a refugee in America, as simultaneously concerned with ‘the hell of the Syrian war and the hell of living in Chicago’.
