PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,

We have had another busy week at Elanora Heights and I can hardly believe that we are already half way through Term 4! Our staff are presently preparing reports for the end of the year and organising our classes for 2017 – a very busy time for everyone! I would like to remind you that any requests related to your child’s class placement for 2017 need to be received prior to next Friday 18 November. This includes informing the office if your child will not require a class in 2017. I thank you for your assistance in our class formation process.

Year 6 Fun Day!It was big smiles all around on Wednesday with our annual Year 6 Fun Day! Our Year 6 students spent a great deal of time preparing an incredible assortment of treats, products and games for the rest of the school and the weather held out just long enough for everyone to participate in lots of fun. Congratulations to the Year 6 students, led by Mrs Cynthia Pitt, Mr Scott Reid and Miss Charlotte Reddan, who collectively raised $2616 which will be put towards a farewell gift to the school. An outstanding achievement!

Student Leadership ElectionsToday I had the great pleasure of listening to our Year 5 students present their leadership election speeches for 2017. They spoke about school pride, the qualities of good leadership and their commitment to our school in their efforts to secure a vote. I would like to congratulate each and every one of them for having the cour-age to stand up and present themselves in such an outstanding manner – in my opinion they are all extreme-ly worthy candidates and I look forward to working closely with the elected team in 2017. I would also like to acknowledge the fine efforts of Mrs Syliva Zaratsian, Ms Charlotte Reddan and Mrs Vicki Bosler, who conducted an excellent leadership training program for our students and coordinated the election process. We now eagerly await the announcement of the successful candidates!

Maths CampOn Monday and Tuesday of this week Mrs Laurinda Lomas, Mr Jono Rosconi and Mrs Laila Marsden accompanied approximately 75 students from across the Northern Beaches to the annual Maths Camp, held at Elanora Conference Centre. A wonderfully stimulating time was had by all students who worked collaboratively to solve problems and stretch their brains!

My thanks to Mrs Lomas for utilising her expertise in Mathematics to provide this wonderful opportunity for so many students – we are so lucky to have such a passionate mathematician at Elanora Heights PS. Be sure to read a wonderful recount of Vania’s experience later in this newsletter.

Kindergarten Orientation Information EveningA reminder that our final parent information evening is Tuesday evening, commencing at 7pm. All details regarding the first couple of weeks of 2017 will be presented at our info evening and I look forward to seeing all of our Kindergarten parents there.

Until next time,

S... MATHS CHALLENGE CAMP

Hypothesising, testing, experimenting and looking for patterns was all in a day’s work at Maths Challenge Camp last week!

Four of our year 5 students attended the 2 day camp at Elanora Conference Centre. Held annually, this camp is run by primary teachers with a passion for mathematics and the creativity it offers, so of course, Miss Marsden, Mr Rosconi and I were there!

Students are asked to think like mathematicians when solving problems made famous by Plato, Escher, Pascal and Fibonnacci. They all found it challenging, and were excited for more!

The culminating activity, creating a life-size geodesic dome, put their cooperation and visualisation skills to the test. Luckily they had all worked well on their problem solving skills, and made new friends to solve this big problem together.

We were so impressed with the mathematical thinking our students did and the impeccable manners shown to all. Well done, everyone!

By Vania 5B:

Last week Tyler T, Mitchell G, Jasper B and I were invited to join 70 other Year 5 students from Northern Beaches schools at a Maths Challenge Camp.

At the camp we had two goals for the two days: to meet new friends and learn how to work like a mathematician. To do this we had to:

• Define the problem

• Experiment

• Collect and organise data

• Look for patterns

• Hypothesise and test and

• Reflect on our ideas.

Everyone tried to accomplish these things throughout each activity. To my surprise, when the teachers got out sports equipment I truly thought we were doing sport. I was wrong. Everything was Maths. Everything. We learned about Plato, Pascal, Fibonacci and Escher, all famous mathematicians. These were also the names of the four groups that everyone was divided into.

The thing I enjoyed the most about this camp was learning this saying that one of the teachers told us: “Nullis inverbia - Take nobody’s word for it… prove it.” I will definitely make sure I remember this because it means a lot to me and encourages me to keep on going.

Y... P&C AGM

The P&C AGM is scheduled for next Wednesday, November 23 at 7.15pm in the Staffroom.

This meeting receives reports from the President and Treasurer. No other business is discussed at this meeting. Once the reports are presented the President hands the Chair to the school Principal who declares all positions vacant.

Any member of the community may nominate for any position. Each nomination must be seconded. In the event of more than person nominating for a position a vote is taken. Any member of the community may vote.

When all positions are filled (some may remain vacant) the Principal returns the Chair to the new President. The President usually makes an acceptance speech and then closes the meeting.

Immediately following the AGM is the first meeting of the P&C Association with the newly elected committees. The start time cannot be determined but is usually a little after 7.30pm.

The P&C Federation have some arcane rules on voting rights at normal P&C meetings. To vote you must be a financial member and if you pay the outrageous sum of $1.00 prior to the completion of the AGM you are entitled to vote at the first meeting and each subsequent meeting until the next AGM in 2017.

We are looking for the following committee positions:A Vice PresidentPossibly a TreasurerMaybe a General Committee Member (or two)A Languages ConvenorAn Art Class Convenor

The P&C do wonderful things for the benefit of the school’s students; we do it for them, what could be better than that? If you can assist and complement your day job the best possible way then turn up and nominate for a role. P&C MeetingImmediately after the AGM on Wednesday November 23, the P&C will meet to discuss items placed on the Agenda.

Please email Agenda items you wish to have discussed to [email protected] by 6pm this Friday, 18 November.

The Agenda and minutes of the last meeting along with the Agenda and minutes from the previous AGM will be made available next week.

YEAR 6 EMBRACE WHITE RIBBON DAYDear Parents and Caregivers,

As some people may already know, 25th November is White Ribbon Day!

Year 6 will be participating in the task of raising awareness of the importance for

boys and girls to be nice to each other and play together happily.

Individual events will be held throughout the school for grades K-5. Each grade will

take part in an activity that encourages cooperative play and teamwork, followed

by a talk about the values of being kind to each other.

Livelifewell@School Parent and Teacher Meeting – Wed 30th November, 3.00 pm, in vacant classroom at end of Year 2 block

Last term ended with the marvellous Eat a Rainbow activity – totally organised by parents for the benefit of K-2 children. This arose from a Livelifewell@school meeting and is a wonderful example of how parents’ ideas and effort make such a difference to a school.

The team of canteen workers have also brought some interesting initiatives and nutritious menu changes this year. Livelifewell@school is about teachers and parents working together to promote healthy lifestyle habits to set children up for the best possible lifetime health. Beyond nutrition, this also means daily physical activity and being careful not to overdo screen time.

We’ve been lucky to have some keen parents attend our earlier LLW@S meetings this year – maybe you would like to come along and be part of this group. We aim to meet once a term and the final meeting for the year will be Wednesday November 30 at 3:00 pm in the vacant classroom at the end of the Year 2 building. Enter by the steps/ramp used by 2S. I hope to see familiar and new faces. Please RSVP to: [email protected]

BOOK CLUBBook Club brochures are going home today and orders will need to be finalised by Tuesday November 22.

Orders can only be made on-line and the books will be sent to the school for distribution.

SUMMER FUN DAYIn Term 4 Heights Delights will be putting on a “Summer Fun Day”. The menu will feature pizza subs made in-house - rolls topped with pizza sauce, ham and gooey melted cheese. To continue the ‘under the sea’ summer theme, Finding Dory ice creams will be offered for dessert as well as Frog in Ponds (jelly) or Frogs in Mud (chocolate mousse). We will also be offering Ice Magic fruit salad cups. Drinks and sand-wiches will also be available.

The Summer Fun Day menu is classified as “amber-light” under the Government guidelines. This classification was allocated to the canteen team because our school has already met the maximum number of “red-light” days this term. The Summer Fun Day will take place on Tuesday November 29.

If you can help the canteen team on the day, please let Erku know on 9913 2721 or email Erku at: [email protected]
