Moons
You know that Earth is in the Sun’s solar system, or family. You also know that Earth orbits the Sun. Did you know that there is something in orbit around Earth? It is our moon.
A moon is not a planet. It is made of rock or ice. Some planets, like Saturn, have more than one moon. Others, like Mercury, have no moons. Still others, like Earth, have one moon. In all, there are more than 173 moons in our solar system. Each moon circles its own planet.
The moons and the planets all circle the Sun. Our moon is very different from the planet Earth. There is no water, air, blue sky, or weather on Earth’s moon. There is no life on our moon. The moon has many light and dark rocks. Some say that from Earth, they look like a face. The next time there is a full moon, see if you can see the “man in the moon.”
Kids have been rappers ever since hip-hop music became popular. Some became stars. Will Smith and LL Cool J had hits in their teens. Other kids had success even before their teens.
The rappers Lil’ Romeo and Lil’ Bow Wow both gained fame before age thirteen. Both of them kept rapping. Each of them dropped the “Lil’” from his name when he got too big.
P-Star was only nine when she rapped at clubs in New York. A movie about her showed on TV. P-Star also became an actor.
Some kids get their start on talent shows. CJ Dippa is just one of the kid rappers who have done well on TV.
Hip-hop is here to stay. As long as there is hip-hop, there will be kid rappers, too.
Choose a different activity every day to practice this week’s spelling words at home with your child.Trace Your WordsUse your finger to write each spelling word in sand, flour, or a similar material.

Spelling HomeworkRead each spelling word aloud with your child. Spell it aloud together. Then ask your child to write each spelling word and say it in a sentence.
Dinosaurs died out about 65 million years ago. But some animals that were cousins to the dinosaurs are still around today. These dinosaur cousins are the crocodiles.
In 2009, scientists found the fossils of some very old crocodiles. These ancient crocodiles lived 100 million years ago. They were not exactly the same as crocodiles today. But they were close.
The fossils showed scientists that there were different kinds of ancient crocodiles. Crocodiles the size of dogs ate plants and grubs. Others were twenty feet long and had three rows of teeth. These toothy crocodiles even ate dinosaurs!
Today’s crocodiles live in many different parts of the world. It does not take much effort to picture them among those long-gone dinosaurs. Unlike dinosaurs, though, these creatures are still around.
Angela stopped looking at the ocean to admire her bracelet. Her grandmother had given it to her, and it was very special. Then Angela slipped off her shoes to enjoy a barefoot walk along the beach.
A woman in a boat passed by. She waved, and Angela waved back. Then she stared down at her arm in shock. Granny’s bracelet was gone!
Angela returned to her family and told them about her bracelet disaster. They burst into action.
Grandpa used his metal detector. He couldn’t find the bracelet.
Angela’s brother Johnny followed his sister’s footprints along the beach. He too hoped to discover her bracelet, but he never saw it.
Mom carefully sifted the sand where Angela had been sitting. She searched and searched. She couldn’t find the bracelet, either.
It was time to go home. Angela blinked back tears. She picked up her shoe. Out fell the bracelet!
