Haroidsen ) Tests on the VTS-3A facility definitely established that diffuser film cooling during ejector operation causes the capsule pressure to degrade from about 1 .6 psi (51,000 ft . altitude) to approximately 4 .0 psi (31,000 ft altitude) . Steam blow--back into the capsule, also caused by the film cooling, is the cause of the high capsule temperatures experienced . Test Systems has strongly suggested that a J-2 test be'forced to mainstage so the effect of film cooling during J-2 operation can be evaluated . The advisability of pursuing , film cooling would be known 'imiieiiiately . FRO LLAN? ALTITUDE SIMULATION

J-2 Altitude System -- VTS-3A ( 0 . Haroidsen )

Tests on the VTS-3A facility definitely established thatdiffuser film cooling during ejector operation causes thecapsule pressure to degrade from about 1 .6 psi (51,000 ft .

altitude) to approximately 4 .0 psi (31,000 ft altitude) .Steam blow--back into the capsule, also caused by the film

cooling, is the cause of the high capsule temperaturesexperienced. Test Systems has strongly suggested that aJ-2 test be'forced to mainstage so the effect of film

cooling during J-2 operation can be evaluated . The

The 2=" Coca to ~l_~a/Bravo Cascade line has been blown down . T -e

Over 55 hours of satisfactory operation has been obtained sinceinstallation of Ingersoll Rand valves in the fifth stage .

The problem of rod pac king seal failures was discussed with aChicago Pneumatic representative . He was shown the seals on other?oc'cet:iyne GH2 Compressors wl-iich give good service and requestedto Drovide better seals for the C-P machine .
