What Did Earth Day Accomplish?
April 22nd is Earth Day
Earth Day is a day to reflect on our planet, our environment and what we can do to help keep them healthy.
Children have the most important role in keeping our planet healthy. After all, they will be the caretakers after their parents and grandparents have passed away.
In 1969, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace. He recommended that this day of honoring should be held on the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. Thanks to the help of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day was founded a month later and the first official Earth Day occurred on April 22, 1970.
While Earth Day was originally observed in the United States, it started to spread internationally to other countries in 1990 and is now celebrated in over 141 nations.

Find a Way to Compost Kitchen Scraps and Leaves
Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled as fertilizer and soil addition. Compost is a key ingredient in organic farming. At the basic level, the process of composting simply requires the creation of wetted organic matter (a.k.a. green waste) and waiting for the materials to break down after a few weeks or months. The decomposition process is aided by adding water and ensuring proper aeration while frequently turning the mixture. Eventually, ammonium from the green waste is converted by bacteria into nitrates. At this stage, the green waste has become fertilizer. Look into ways you can contribute to composting and organic farming in your area.

Benefits of Walking and Running Walking and running offer numerous benefits, ranging from increased physical fitness to an increased sense of well-‐being. Since both walking and running are great for your overall health, choosing between these two exercises often comes down to individual preference and fitness level. If you can run for only very short distances, walking might be a better choice for you, as you will be able to exercise more frequently and for longer durations. Examining the pros and cons for both walking and running can help you determine which exercise fits your lifestyle. The American Heart Association states that walking may reduce the risks of breast cancer, colon cancer, heart disease, type-‐2 diabetes and osteoporosis. It can also alleviate high blood pressure and improve blood sugar levels. Taking a brisk walk every day can contribute to your overall fitness by burning calories, improving muscle strength and help your cardiovascular system. Even your overall mood can be positively affected, since walking releases endorphins that improve your mood and helps increase concentration levels. Running helps burn calories, which can contribute to weight loss and reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Running can also strengthen and stabilize ligaments in the body, making you less susceptible to sprains. Because running is a high-‐impact workout, you'll burn more calories and engage your entire cardiovascular system. Towson University states that running can decrease the risk of heart disease, hypertension and stress. Since running also releases endorphins, additional benefits can also help improve self-‐esteem and mental health. Studies have shown that running can also help reduce and relieve symptoms of depression.
Healthy Choices
Vehicle Accidents Increased in 2015
The National Safety Council estimates that in 2015, 38,300 people were killed on U.S. roads, and 4.4 million people were seriously injured. There are many factors that may have contributed to these statistics, such as falling gas prices, lower unemployment and a stronger economy. Still, there are many human factors that could have been prevented which would have drastically reduced the amount of fatalities and injuries.
Driving a car is one of the riskiest activities we engage in everyday, despite decades of vehicle design improvements and traffic safety advancements. Engaging in defensive driving skills and staying alert can save your life and the lives of others. To help ensure safety, the Council recommends drivers:
Make sure every passenger buckles up on every trip Designate an alcohol-‐and drug-‐free driver or arrange alternate transportation Get plenty of sleep and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue Never use a cell phone behind the wheel, even hands-‐free Stay engaged in teens' driving habits, as teens are three times more likely to crash as more experienced drivers. Learn about your vehicle's safety systems and how to use them. Mycardoeswhat.org can help drivers understand features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning systems and backup cameras.
