Dear Friends of Egypt, dear children of Liberia, dear Participants of the Art Competition “Egypt in the Eyes of the Children of Liberia I & II”,

Saturday 4 February 2012 was a special day for all the Children of Liberia as H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf , President of Liberia, launched the Children’s Law of Liberia 2012. This law represents a promise to all children of Liberia that the government is committed to their protection and promotion; in accordance to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which 193 States have ratified including Liberia.

EGYPT wants to join the Children of Liberia to celebrate this day. It was only fitting that we announce the Winners of the Art Competition “Egypt in the Eyes of the Children of Liberia II” in the same venue as well as exhibit the fine art work of almost 200 Liberian children from all over the country between the age of 6 and 19 year old, in the desig-nated area of the Egyptian Embassy at the Samuel K. Doe Stadium grounds. The Prize Ceremony was held during the Second Egyptian Cultural Week in Monrovia in March 2012, at a special ceremony for the children at the Residence of the Egyptian Ambassador.

One of my proudest moments since my arrival in this country was to see more than 200 Liberian children from dif-ferent schools in Liberia take part in the Drawing and Painting Competition titled, “Egypt in the Eyes of the Children of Liberia,” in 2011 and the second in 2012 .

Liberia and Egypt share a strong bond. Egypt has supported Liberia since the establishment of relations in the mid-fifties. Egypt, together with the United States and Nigeria, never severed relations with Liberia in good and bad times. This relationship will continue. Egypt will keep building on this friendship based on mutual interest and mutual aspirations.

It is my sincere believe that the children and the youth of a nation are its future. This is why the Egyptian Embassy feels that investing in projects involving the young people of Liberia is a strong contribution to the development of the future of Liberia.

Teach, encourage and motivate kids in different aspects and the sky is the limit.

Kids are the future of Liberia and together all children are the ones who will bring not only Liberia but our whole continent to a new threshold of development. This small pamphlet serves as a commemoration to the young artists of Liberia who will paint the new era of Liberia for the future. Egypt in the Eyes of Liberian Children is Egypt’s small contribution to bringing out potential talents of the youth in this beautiful nation of Liberia.

Finally, I would like to extend a special thanks to Anneke Quoi for her enthusiastic support in organizing both Art Competitions: “Egypt in the Eyes of the Children of Liberia I & II” (2011& 2012). As well as the members of the Board of the Liberian Egyptian Friendship Society.

Dear Liberians, dear friends of Egypt and Liberia, dear Children of Liberia,

Liberia is rising, Liberia is booming, Liberia is transitioning and everyone should join efforts to support Liberia in its reconstruction. This reconstruction should start with the children, with the young Liberians and with the youth as they are the backbone of today’s and tomorrow’s Liberia. The Arab Republic of Egypt, through its Ambassador H.E. Maher El Adawy has been doing an extraordinary job not only in terms of bringing in corporate investors but also in forging public partnerships, in promoting cultural development and then recently in sensitizing the Children of Liberia to Art and Painting. TOTAL is proud to partner with the Embassy of Egypt to support this essential initiative.

The Children of Liberia deserve quality education, the young people of Liberia deserve job opportunities in the public and private sectors and the youth deserve a bright future. They are the ones who are building tomorrow’s Liberia; they are the ones who will make Liberia a reference in terms of economic growth, development, peace and stability in Africa and in the World. In support of this, one of the key objectives of the Total Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility program worldwide is to promote the education of people of all ages, races and economic standing. In keeping with this mandate, Total Liberia has implemented in Liberia various educational initiatives ranging from road safety, to environmental protection, to better health standards, to languages, and most recently art. Art is not only of creating beauty, but also of encouraging self-expression and communication that is usually lost if not cultivated, especially in children. Pablo Picasso is quoted as saying that “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”. The implementation of “Egypt in the Eyes of the Children of Liberia I & II” sponsored by the Egyptian Embassy, is a great doorway to ensure that the children of Liberia are encouraged to continue to create and learn. As of today, TOTAL is the leading petroleum company in Liberia and has created more than 1000 jobs for Liberians all over the country from Monrovia to Ganta, from Greenville to Voinjama, from Buchanan to Zorzor. Most of those jobs are currently held by young and dynamic Liberians who are eager to be part of the Liberian success story. With the goal of reaching 2500 jobs for Liberians by the end of 2015, TOTAL’s priority is to focus on the Children & Youth of Liberia and their education in order to empower them and make them successful in their working and personal life. TOTAL cares for Liberia and the people of Liberia and will continue to implement corporate responsibility initiatives such as our current art collaboration with the H.E. Maher El Adawy to support, empower and promote Liberians. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to H.E. Maher El Adawy, who has been extremely active in developing actions, partnerships, awareness campaigns and events during which public, private and diplomatic sectors can interact, exchange and work together in Liberia. This energetic, tireless and extraordinary person is a role model that Total Liberia is proud to be associated with.
