The airport is often the very first image that one has of a country or city uponleaving the plane. Previously isolated, located far from cities, airport operationstoday comprise hyper-connected mega-structures that are covered in everydirection by passengers who are more and more numerous and demanding.Traffic flow management, security requirements, a concentration of leading-edge technologies, the expanse of interior spaces all form part of the principalchallenges posed by airport projects. Egis proposes a global offer – from the feasibility studies, through all stages ofproject design and management, to devising new services and facilities.

Within the Egis group, consultants, engineers, project managers, projectdevelopers, airport infrastructure and services operators all bring their specificexpertise to the design, project management and operation of airports.

Global capabilities

Organizing the master planWhether to renovate, extend or create a new airport hub, Egispossesses the resources for designing complex ensembles, like the new towns and other urban development operationsin which the group participates. To account for the spatial andtemporal scale of an airport, which is sometimes that of a city,Egis performs specific studies regarding its atypical spatialvolumes and programs spanning several decades. As a resultof its skil l and experience, Egis can anticipate themodularity and development of a built ensemble over time.

Creating multimodalityBecause the traveler’s experience begins at the placewhere he/she starts out for the air terminal, andcontinues to the plane departure gate, the airportcan no longer be conceived in isolation from anentire grid of transport systems, which must ensurefluidity, safety and comfort. With expertise acquiredon numerous airport projects, and also on road, railand multimodal hub operations, Egis is recognizedthe world over in the field of transport and mobility.

Acting for the environment Limiting noise nuisances, CO2 emissions, global energy consumption – the specificationsfor airports have changed. The energy performance of large spaces and respecting the standards in force in eachcountry form an integral part of each project undertaken by Egis, which has madethese considerations one of the main directions for company development. Havingstrengthened synergies among its subsidiaries, set up a sustainable developmentcommittee, created tools and developed methods to lower the ecological footprint ofprojects, and participated in many research projects with the ANR (French national researchagency), Egis is determined to play an active role in protecting the environment.

Designing large spatial volumesLarge spatial volumes have considerable consequenceson all the engineering trades for an airport project:structures with large spans, air-handling, specific climate-related work on facades… The specialist engineers within Egis who design structures, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, climate facadesand complex structures ( l ightweight , with large spans, transparent, etc.) make these mega-projects possible, respectingthe architectural, technical and economic dimensions demanded.

Imagining servicesBeyond the specific vocation of air transportation, the economic system of airports relies on an arrayof activities. The shops and services proposedfully contribute to the profitability of an airportcomplex. As airport operator (12 airports aroundthe world totaling 21 million passengers and200 000 tons of freight annually), Egisaccounts for these key amenities beforecommencing the programming stage.

Incorporating innovative systemsThe growth in air transport puts more and more pressure on airport systems and demandsinnovation to strengthen fire safety, security and control measures. Airports are also looking for ways to offer more services to heighten the traveler’sexperience. This means installing high-performance systems for self-service check-inand the issuing of boarding passes, displaying information in real time, etc. Thesesolutions also contribute to improving passenger flows in the air terminals. Coveringthe design of all these systems, Egis devises customized solutions for fire safetyand security systems, integrated data processing systems and baggage handlingequipment, to name but a few.
