NAIDOC Week

This week Bega Valley Public School is celebrating NAIDOC week. Our theme for 2018 is - Because of her, we can! We will especially be celebrating the invaluable contributions that our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made - and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. As pillars of our society, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels.

For at least 65,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have carried our Dreaming stories, songlines, languages and knowledge that have kept our culture strong and enriched us as the oldest continuing culture on the planet. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women were there at first contact.

They continue to influence as doctors, lawyers, teachers, electricians, architects, emergency and defence personnel, volunteers, accountants, academics - the list goes on. They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters. They have marched, protested and spoken out for justice, equal rights, our rights to country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate our culture, language, music and art. They did so and continue to do so, while caring for our families and maintaining our homes. Their achievements, their voice, their unwavering passion give us strength and have empowered past generations and paved the way for generations to come.

Walk the Bundian Way As part of our NAIDOC week celebrations, Stage 3 were lucky enough

to walk part of the Bundian Way Story Trail.

The Bundian Way is the best preserved of the ancient east-west Aboriginal routes of South

Eastern Australia. It has been used for millennia by Aboriginal people for practical resource

access, ceremonial and education purposes, maintenance of kinship ties and business and

trade. It was also used to share knowledge and resources, make alliances and settle

disputes.

The Bundian Way is a 256km-long route from the coast at Bilgalera (Fisheries Beach) near

Eden, to the summit of Targangal (Mount Kosciuszko).

NAIDOC Week Assembly

Today Bega Valley Public School held a special whole school NAIDOC week assembly. We were treated to a cultural dance display by Bega Valley Public School and Bega High dancers. They will also be performing at the Bega High School today. We were also lucky enough to enjoy a special song written and performed by 4S titled “Because Of Her We Can”. We will be wrapping up our celebrations on Friday with a Colour Day and Disco.

Athletics Carnival

Last Friday 29 June was the annual BVPS Athletics Carnival.

We were blessed with sunshine and dry conditions on the field.

We were so impressed with all the support and encouragement from

parents and carers who came along to cheer on their children. Thank you to all the helpers who contributed towards making it such a

successful day, the students thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jigamy Farm

As part of the NAIDOC week celebrations Stage 2 were fortunate enough to travel to Jigamy Farm to participate in various cultural activities such as bush walking,

boomerang and spear throwing, seed grinding and storytelling. Students enjoyed a wonderfully rich cultural experience.

Please contract ring Chris Young on 0427 998 944 if you can help out. School Stream Ap & Facebook page – tell a friend I am constantly amazed when parents tell me that they didn’t know an event was on, we need your help to spread the word on the School Stream Ap & the Facebook page – if you are doing pick up and are talking to other parents, please ask them if they have the school stream ap or have joined the school Facebook site. If they haven’t can you show them how to join. The P&C is very supportive of the school’s move to start using the School Stream Ap. You can download this Ap for free at the ITunes store or the equivalent Ap store for non-Apple phones. The School will use this Ap to get information like newsletters, bus breakdowns, absent notes, excursion details etc out to parents. Once you have downloaded the Ap you will be able to sign up to Bega Public School and get all the alerts in real time as they are posted. Facebook Please join the schools Facebook page, it is a great source of information about what is happening in the school. Information from the school will go out on School Stream and the info from the P&C will go out on Facebook, so make sure you join both.
