TRANSLATION AS A CAREER

T ranslation is a way to travel beyondcultural boundaries and to share

experiences. Had translation not beenthere, human civilization could not havetravelled so far from the age of wheel andfire to the age of 'mars mission'. In anessentially diverse world, translation hasprovided the way to transmit great ideasto the human kind and providing themmany solutions for betterment. It can besaid that the first translator of the worldwould have been someone who perhapshad helped someone lost from his tribe orperhaps a person who had helped miti-gate a conflict between two warringgroups.

But in modern context translation isnot something to just transform a contentword by word but it is something whichbeautifully converts the feelings of a con-tent or statement to a quite different cul-tural landscape. So, a translator must besomeone who has ample knowledge oftwo languages and more so he must alsoswim across the cultural landscapes ofthe time. To quote Gracia Marquez ontranslation 'it is a most difficult work and agood translation is always a recreation inanother language'.

In a country like India and also for thefast changing globalised world, the impor-tance of translation is growing day by day.For the knowledge to disseminate furtherto the masses it is essential that goodtranslation should be provided to thepeople who do not know essentially morelanguages than their native one. For thegrowth of tourism and for diplomatic

purposes translators are much indemand. Even for the sake of securityreasons, governments agencies arealways on look for good translators. Manycountries in this world do not use Englishor other major languages and their diplo-matic visits are essentially accompa-nied by good translators and interpreters.

In an age where geography is fastbecoming history and internet is cuttingacross all sections of society, the Englishlanguage is gradually losing its hold, thanks to the emergence of China, Japan

and India as powers to reckon with. Insuch a scenario, the job of a translator orinterpreter is increasingly being seen as acareer option by many.

In India where more than 200-majorlanguages are in use and which is muchdiversified, translation provides tool toknow the diversity of the nation.

Had there not been good translations,Sharatchandra or Tagore could not havebeen popular among Indian or globalmasses.

Multinational companies are open-ing in India and are looking forwell trained employable individuals.

What to do?The increased number of options has

added to the confusion. Hence, oneneeds to plan a career effectively and beupdated with the changes so that one cangrow with newer careers. One needs tobe well informed about various choicesand plan the next step accordingly.

This can be done by understandingthe major trends that affect jobs, whichwill enable a person in making bettercareer decisions. The trends one is inter-ested in may be as short as a few yearsor as long as 20+ years. Just like waves, trends move and change everything theycome in contact with. If one is not pre-pared for the big wave he or she will bewashed away like a toy in the ocean.

Initially, trends start off so small thatmost people don't notice them. Eventuallytrends build up to a crescendo.Somewhere in between they make theevening news. The trick is to spot trendsjust as they begin, so that one has time totake action and change his or her lifeaccordingly. An even better trick would beto predict the trends before they start.

A career plan is a blueprint for suc-cess. The foundation on which one canbuild one’s vision- a picture of the suc-cess one aspires for. To construct acareer action plan for oneself , oneneeds to have a clear understandingof one’s real self .To discover oneself, acquire knowledge of what one is goodat, one likes to do or is not happy doing it.This will help a person to develop hisor her personal career plan and mapout the route for career.

Choosing the right path is vital to find-ing balance, happiness and success.Hence, it is very important to select thecareer in the field of interest. Facets of Career Decision- Making

EFFECTIVE CAREER...Continued from page 1

The writings of Munshi Premchand oreven Shakespeare could not have beenknown to the people of the world. Also, forthe welfare programmes of government orinternational agencies , good translationis essential for the success of these pro-grammes and for the spread of messagesthey possess.

Translation has a deep relationshipwith the language. Though, translationkills some essence of the content butgood translation sometimes enhances theessence of the content as well. It is truethat one's mother tongue cannot beequated with even best of the best trans-lation as Michel Foucault correctly saidthat language is not just a means of com-munication; rather it is a thought process.Obviously, translation does not fit wellwith this definition as it comes from a dif-ferent thought process but it helps differ-ent civilization come together and buildsbridge between them. For the same rea-sons many great scholars of the day havepreferred to read even poorly translatedcontent in their own language; rather thanreading it in an alien language difficult tounderstand or move them heartily.

So what quality should a translatorpossess ? Obviously he must be masterof both languages and their traditions andalso master of the subject which he trans-lating. He should translate the feelings;not the words without tampering the facts. Moreover, he should be having morecommand over the language in which heis going to translate or re-produce thecontent.

In India with growing literacy rate andexplosion of internet communication, translation is going to be much indemand. Government and non-govern-ment agencies, courts, security and diplo-matic institutions as well as corporatesare always in need of translators. Though, translation could be learnt through selfstudy but there are several instituteswhich are providing translation degreesand diplomas which could be useful forthe youth to seek employment in thissector:M.Phil. in Translation StudiesUniversity of Hyderabad - Centre for AppliedLinguistics and Translation studiesM.A. in 'Translation: Theory andApplication'-University of PuneMax Mueller Bhavan New Delhi for German,Alliance Francaise New Delhi for French,Cervantes for Spanish and so on.

In West Bengal, Calcutta University(CU), Jadavpur University (JU) andRamkrishna Mission offer languagecourses. The Central Institute of Englishand Foreign Languages (CIEFL) inHyderabad also offers language courses. Many other institutions and universities inthe country have been offering translationcourses.

Again, a growing literacy rate in Indiais pushing publication houses to enter intothe zone of local language translationsand many global publication houses havestarted translation in Hindi and othernational languages. Penguin and HarperCollins have entered into Hindi in a bigway and they are also getting some suc-cess.

So, there are opportunities spurringup. However it is not essential that a new-comer coming into this field would getinstant success. Since, there is lot of com-petition in a large country like ours, oneshould create his name first and do thework at low rate for some month. Heshould also be a good networking personto get constant work. Generally, foreignagencies pay well in translation and thereare many websites like proz.com whichprovide translation work. Even many gov-ernment and non-government agenciesand publication houses offer translationwork on regular basis. But there shouldbe quality and timely delivery assurance.

Obviously, English to Hindi/other lan-guage or vice-versa is the main transla-tion work happening in India but in termsof payment, Chinese, Japanese orSpanish are more paying. For example, the rate of English to Hindi translationvaries from Rs 0.75 to Rs 3 per worddepending upon the client, quality, dead-line and reference. The same for theChinese to English or Chinese to Hindimay vary from Rs 2 to Rs 6 per word.

Generally book publication houses payless for a new comer, it is good to gainexperience there and create his name. For students of universities it may alsoadd to their bio data if they translate abook or article of a great author.

With the explosion of internet andsocial media, good translation will be inhuge demand in future as the characterand trend of the social media is mothertongue friendly. It has suddenly happenedthat people are communicating more andmore in their own language rather thanthe languages of the professional world. The post in someone's mother languagegets more hits and shares than a post in amajor power language. So, internet isopening up plethora of opportunities andbringing new dimensions which have yetto be understood. Again with the worldbeing more connected and being moredecentralised, translation is the key wordin this world and it will be there for sure.
