Had We sent down this Quran on a mountain, you would certainly
have seen it falling down, splitting asunder because of the fear of
Allah, and We set forth these parables to men that they may

HADITH
Ibn Umar reported that Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him)
forbade (people) taking vows, and said: It does not (necessarily)
bring good (in the form of substantial, and tangible results), but
it is the meant whereby something is extracted from the miserly
persons.

A diverse array of people in the United States are preparing for
the annual Thanksgiving holiday. Schoolchildren are being fed a
sunny portrait of the relations between the Pilgrims and the
Indians. Families are shopping for traditional staples such as
turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin. Young and old are
struggling to find something to be grateful for in a year full of
struggle. Muslims, homegrown and immigrants, are planning to enjoy
the day with family and friends. Shoppers are setting their sights
on Black Friday sales. What could be wrong with this picture?
The answer is plenty, and it is complicated by hundreds of years
of collective misinformation. While the notion of a day to
symbolize thanks may sound beneficial, it is important to educate
ourselves about the facts relating to the “first Thanksgiving
feast”, as well as the folklore that has been added along the way.
There is a chilling history that is often overlooked. We must
examine the details from an alternative perspective and acknowledge
that the making of our country came at great expense to the
Native
people who lived here. And there are continuing implications of
these atrocities to this day.
Some Basic Facts
The Mayflower did bring Pilgrims to North America from Plymouth,
England in 1620. They formed a colony in what is known as Plymouth,
Massachusetts. And in 1691, they likely did celebrate a three-day
harvest feast that was attended by members of the Wampanoag tribe.
This is where most of the Thanksgiving “his-story” is derived.
According to James Loewen, a sociologist and author of “Lies My
Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got
Wrong,” this event as the first Thanksgiving celebration is not
correct, as both the Native American tribes and European societies
had been holding festivals to celebrate successful harvest for
centuries.
Loewen devoted an entire chapter of his book to “The Truth about
the First Thanksgiving.” Here are some of the facts you might not
find in a typical history textbook.
The first non-Native settlers in what we know now as the United
States were African slaves left in South Carolina in 1526 by
Spaniards who abandoned a settlement attempt.
British and French fishermen frequented the Massachusetts coast
as early as 1617. In addition to gathering firewood and fresh
water, they also captured Natives to sell into slavery. Within
three years, disease (likely the bubonic
plague, viral hepatitis, or smallpox) wiped out between 90 to 96
percent of the inhabitants of coastal New England.
The “Pilgrims” never called themselves by that name. They were
separatists who were interested in establishing a religious
theocracy, rather than seeking “religious freedom.” And they were
coming to the New World to make money.
Plymouth was already a village when these settlers found it. It
was uninhabited at that moment, as all of the natives had been
wiped out by disease. According to historian Howard Simpson, they
likely found the area in ruins, “strewn with the skulls and the
bones of thousands of Indians who had died and none was left to
bury them.”
White settlers experienced many hardships but not to the
catastrophic extent of their Native counterparts. They reasoned
that God was on their side, and that buoyed their further
exploitation and oppression of the Native tribes without
remorse.
Natives found little relief in their own medicines and religious
beliefs. Many who survived the plagues succumbed to alcohol,
converted to Christianity, or committed suicide.
The Wampanoag tribe may have been cordial to the settlers in
1620. That was largely because the alliance strengthened their hand
(many of the tribe had been lost to disease) in dealing with a
neighboring tribe – the Narragansetts – to their west.
Squanto is frequently credited with sharing important

What You Might Not Know about Thanksgiving

farming and fishing with the settlers and there is likely some
truth to it. He had learned English as a young boy, not from
friendly fisherman, but in England, where he had been sold as a
slave. Upon making his way back to his village, his tribe had been
devastated.
It is more likely that the first Thanksgiving celebrated in the
New World stemmed from the massacre of Pequot people in 1637,
following the Pequot War.
Today, many Native tribes gather on Thanksgiving to commemorate
it as a National Day of Mourning.
There are additional details related to the making of
Thanksgiving as a national holiday that are noteworthy. New
Englanders began referring to a nostalgic story of the harvest
celebration between the “Pilgrims and the Indians” as Thanksgiving
in the 1830s. The occasion was made a national holiday in 1863,
when President Abraham Lincoln sought to show appreciation for the
Civil War victories in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania. He thought a national day of thanks might unify the
nation. And there are plenty more details to learn.
Why Are the Facts Important?
As a Muslim, it is important to know the facts about everything
we support or engage in. When it comes to Western holiday
celebrations, we must understand that non-Muslim occasions
often have a sordid backstory. In most instances, origins can be
based in pagan rituals and real facts are often misconstrued,
ignored, and revised over time. This is purposeful and serves to
sanitize one particular account of history. These troubling
beginnings have led to continued devastation for Native Americans,
whose lands were stolen, treaties ignored, whose culture was
decimated, whose people were murdered, and whose health and welfare
are still in peril.
This is another way that white supremacy creeps into and is
perpetuated in our national fabric. We need to keep our eyes and
ears open when learning about history and when attempting to digest
the news of today. We must insist on hearing many perspectives of
the same incidents to ensure a balanced account. This is especially
true for parents who are responsible for enjoining good and
forbidding evil, for separating truth from falsehood, for teaching
their children. That means reading beyond the state-supported
textbook accounts of our history, delving into the details, rather
than just going along to get along. Looking at that past is a means
of working on the present and planning for the future. Let’s be
sure that the stories we perpetuate are true, that our actions and
reactions are based on knowledge, and that the accounts we
perpetuate are inclusive of us all.

12 reasons for Shukr (thankfulness) to Allah
Courtesy: soundvision.org
1. We can never count Allah’s Blessings: Be ever grateful to
Allah for everything that you possess including your wealth,
health, status, intellectual abilities and life. Allah says: “Is,
then, He Who creates comparable to any that cannot create? Will you
not, then, take heed? For should you try to count Allah’s
blessings, you could never compute them” (An-Nahl 16:17-19).
2. Shaytan’s primary mission is to make human beings ungrateful:
From the very beginning of the human being’s creation, the issue of
gratefulness and thankfulness to Allah has been debated. After
refusing to bow to Adam, Satan said: “Then I will certainly come to
them from before them and from behind them, and from the right-hand
side and from the left-hand side, and You (Allah) shall not find
most of them thankful.” (Al-Araf 7:17)
3- The opposite of Shukr (gratitude) is Kufr (disbelief): In
many places in the Quran, Allah compares the terms shukr and kufr.
“Then remember Me; I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do
not reject Me” (Al-Baqarah 2:152). Iman (belief) implies shukr or
gratefulness as opposed to kufr or ungratefulness. A kafiror
disbeliever is ungrateful to the Being Who has given him
everything, whereas a Believer is one who is ever thankful for all
that Allah has given him.
4- We thank Allah for our own benefit: If you are ungrateful,
Allah is unaffected. If you become grateful, then you have taken
the first step towards becoming a true Believer. It is for this
reason that the Prophet exhorted us to “Love Allah as we benefit
from His grace” (Tirmidhi). Allah reminds us: “ And whoever is
grateful, he is only grateful for the benefit of his own self”
(Luqman 31:12). “For surely if it was not for the grace of God on
you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers”
(Al-Baqarah 2:64).
5- True worship means sincere thankfulness to Allah: Allah
explained in the Quran that the only people who truly worship Him
are those who give gratitude to Him, so those who are not among the
people of gratitude are not among the people of Ibadah (worship and
obedience). “... and be grateful to All?h, if it is Him you
worship” (Al-Baqarah 2:172).
6- Shukr leads to Allah’s pleasure:
Allah has told us that His pleasure may be attained through
gratitude. “ If you are grateful, He is pleased with you...”
(Az-Zumar 39:7).
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah is
pleased with His servant if, when he eats something, he thanks
Allah for it, and when he drinks something, he thanks Allah for it”
(Muslim).
7- Gratitude is a purpose of our creation: “It is He Who brought
you forth from the wombs of your mothers when you knew nothing; and
He gave you hearing and sight and intelligence and affection: that
you may give thanks (to Allah)”(An-Nahl, 16:78).
8- Shukr is a quality of success in this life and in the
Hereafter: Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet said: “There are
four qualities, whoever is given them has truly been given the best
in this world and the next. They are: a grateful heart (that is
thankful to Allah), a remembering tongue (that mentions Allah
often), an enduring body (to persevere through the trials), and a
faithful wife.”
9- Being grateful and patient in times of difficulty: Everything
that happens to us - even events that we may consider to be
personal afflictions or natural disasters-are from Allah.
Therefore, in times of calamity and distress, there will be some
good for us, provided we respond appropriately. The Prophet said:
“How wonderful is the case of a Believer! There is good for him in
whatever happens to him -and none, apart from him, enjoys this
blessing. If he receives some bounty, he is grateful to Allah and
this bounty brings good to him. And if some adversity befalls him,
he is patient, and this affliction, too, brings good to him”
(Muslim).
10- Allah’s Mercy is for all, but most people will remain
ungrateful: He shows and gives mercy to all, even those who
continue to be ungrateful and rebellious towards Him: “Indeed God
is the possessor of bounty for all people but most people do not
give thanks.” (Al-Baqarah 2: 243).
11- Most people subconsciously thank God: Reflect upon your own
life and you will find innumerable occasions when Allah’s `hand’
has been holding you and helping you. So often, believers and even
atheists subconsciously use the expression ‘Thank God’, without
realising the full implications of our words.
12- Shukr leads to abundance in Allah’s favors: If you
appreciate Allah’s favors, He has promised increased Rahma or mercy
for you. Allah’s reward for your gratitude is unlimited and
unconditional. “If you are grateful, I will surely give you more
and more” (Ibrahim 14:7).
Three ways to express Shukr:
The classical Muslim scholars have indicated Shukr can be shown
in three ways: - Shukr of the heart (Qalb), which is achieved by
harboring and intending good for all of Allah’s creation.
- Shukr of the tongue (Lisan), which involves celebrating the
praises of Allah, such as utterance of Alhamdulillah, and
expressing gratefulness to Allah with our tongue.
- Shukr of the limbs (Jawarih), which is fulfilled by using our
external senses to do good. Every time Allah gives us a blessing,
we must use it in a way that benefits humanity and that pleases
Allah.

Abu Sufyan ibn Harb could not conceive of anyone among the
Quraysh who would dare challenge his authority or go against his
orders. He was after all, the sayyid or chieftain of Makkah who had
to be obeyed and followed.
His daughter, Ramlah, known as Umm Habibah, however dared to
challenge his authority when she rejected the deities of the
Quraysh and their idolatrous ways. Together with her husband,
Ubaydullah ibn Jahsh, she put her faith in Allah alone and accepted
the message of His prophet, Muhammad ibn Abdullah.
Abu Sufyan tried with all the power and force at his disposal to
bring back his daughter and her husband to his religion and the
religion of their forefathers. But he did not succeed. The faith
which was embedded in the heart of Ramlah was too strong to be
uprooted by the hurricanes of Abu Sufyans fury.
Abu Sufyan remained deeply worried and concerned by his
daughter’s acceptance of Islam. He did not know how to face the
Quraysh after she had gone against his will and he was clearly
powerless to prevent her from following Muhammad. When the Quraysh
realized though that Abu Sufyan himself was enraged by Ramlah and
her husband, they were emboldened to treat them harshly. They
unleashed the full fury of their persecution against them to such a
degree that life in Makkah became unbearable.
In the fifth year of his mission, the Prophet, peace be on him,
gave permission to the Muslims to migrate to Abyssinia. Ramlah, her
little daughter Habibah, and her husband were among those who
left.
Abu Sufyan and the Quraysh leaders found it difficult to accept
that a group of Muslims had slipped out of their net of persecution
and was enjoying the freedom to hold their beliefs and practice
their religion in the land of the Negus. They therefore send
messengers to the Negus to seek their extradition. The messengers
tried to poison the mind of the Negus against the Muslims
but after examining the Muslims beliefs and listening to the
Quran being recited, the Negus concluded: “What has been revealed
to your Prophet Muhammad and what Jesus the son of Mary preached
came from the same source.”
The Negus himself announced his faith in the one true God and
his acceptance of the prophethood of Muhammad, peace be on him. He
also announced his determination to protect the Muslim
muhajirin.
The long journey on the road of hardship and tribulation had
finally led to the oasis of serenity. So Umm Habibah felt. But she
did not know that the new-found freedom and sense of peace were
later to be shattered. She was to be put through a test of the most
severe and harrowing kind.
One night, it is related, as Umm Habibah was asleep she had a
vision in which she saw her husband in the midst of a fathomless
ocean covered by wave upon wave of darkness. He was in a most
perilous situation. She woke up, frightened. But she did not wish
to tell her husband or anyone else what she had seen.
The day after that ominous night was not yet through when
Ubaydallah ibn Jahsh announced his rejection of Islam and his
acceptance of Christianity. What a terrible blow! Ramlah’s sense of
peace was shattered. She did not expect this of her husband who
presented her forthwith with the choice of a divorce or of
accepting Christianity. Umm Habibah had three options before her.
She could either remain with her husband and accept his call to
become a Christian in which case she also would commit apostasy and
- God forbid - deserve ignominy in this world and punishment in the
hereafter. This was something she resolved she would never do even
if she were subjected to the most horrible torture. Or, she could
return to her father’s house in Makkah - but she knew he remained a
citadel of shirk and she would be forced to live under him, subdued
and suppressing her faith. Or, she could stay alone in the land of
the Negus as a displaced fugitive - without country, without family
and without a supporter.
She made the choice that she considered was the most pleasing to
God. She made up her mind to stay in Abyssinia until such time as
God granted her relief. She divorced her husband who lived only a
short while after becoming a Christian. He had given himself over
to frequenting wine merchants and consuming alcohol, the “mother of
evils”. This undoubtedly helped to destroy him.
Umm Habibah stayed in Abyssinia for about ten years. Towards the
end of this time, relief and happiness came. It came from an
unexpected quarter.
One morning bright and early, there was a loud knocking on her
door. It was Abrahah, the special maid-servant of the Negus.
Abrahah was beaming with joy as she greeted Umm Habibah and said:
“The Negus sends his greetings and says to you that Muhammad, the
Messenger of God, wants you to marry him and that he has sent a
letter in which he has appointed him as his wakil to contract the
marriage between you and him. If you agree, you are to appoint a
wakil to act on your behalf.”
Umm Habibah was in the clouds with happiness. She shouted to
herself: “God has given you glad tidings. God has given you glad
tidings.” She took off her jewelry- her necklace and bracelets -
and gave them to Abrahah. She took off her rings too and gave them
to her. And indeed if she had possessed all the treasures of the
world, she would have given them to Abrahah at that moment of sheer
joy. Finally she said to Abrahah: “I appoint Khalid ibn Said ibn
al-Aas to act as wakil on my behalf for he is the closest person to
me.”
In the palace of the Negus, set in the midst of beautiful
gardens and luxuriant vegetation and in one of the lavishly
decorated, sumptuously furnished and brightly lit halls, the group
of Muslims living in Abyssinia gathered. They included Jafar ibn
Abi Talib, Khalid ibn Said, Abdullah ibn Hudhafah as-Sahmi and
others. They had gathered to witness the conclusion of the marriage
contract between Umm Habibah, the daughter of Abu Sufyan, and
Muhammad, the Messenger of God. When the marriage
7

(PBUH)
-
was finalized, the Negus addressed the gathering: “I praise God,
the Holy, and I declare that there is no god but Allah and that
Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger and that He gave the good
tidings to Jesus the son of Mary.
“The Messenger of God, peace be on him, has requested me to
conclude the marriage contract between him and Umm Habibah the
daughter of Abu Sufyan. I agreed to do what he requested and on his
behalf I give her a mahr or dowry of four hundred gold dinars.” He
handed over the amount to Khalid ibn Said who stood up and said:
“All praise is due to God. I praise Him and seek His help and
forgiveness and I turn to Him in repentance. I declare that
Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger whom He has sent with the
religion of guidance and truth so that it might prevail over all
other forms of religion even if the disbelievers were to dislike
this.
“I have agreed to do what the Prophet, peace be upon him, has
requested and acted as the wakil on behalf of Umm Habibah, the
daughter of Abu Sufyan. May God bless His Messenger and his
wife.
“Congratulations to Umm Habibah on account of the
goodness which God has ordained for her.”
Khalid took the mahr and handed it over to Umm Habibah. The
Sahabah thereupon got up and prepared to leave but the Negus said
to
them: “Sit down for it is the practice of the Prophets to
serve
food at marriages.”
There was general rejoicing at the court of the
Negus as the guests sat down again to eat and celebrate the
joyous occasion. Umm Habibah especially could hardly believe her
good fortune and she later described how she was eager to share her
happiness. She said: “When I received the money as mahr, I sent
fifty mithqals of gold to Abrahah who had brought me the good
news and I said to her: ‘I gave you what I did when you gave me
the good news because at that time I did not have any money.’
“Shortly afterwards, Abrahah came to me and returned the gold.
She also produced a case which contained the necklace I had given
to her. She returned that to me and said: ‘The King has instructed
me not to take anything from you and he his commanded the women in
his household to present you with gifts of perfume.’
“On the following day, she brought me ambergris, safron and
aloes and said: ‘I have a favor to ask of you.’ ‘What is it?’ I
asked. ‘I have accepted Islam ,’ she said, ‘and now follow the
religion of Muhammad. Convey to him my salutation of peace and let
him know that I believe in Allah and His Prophet. Please don’t
forget.’ She then helped me to get ready for my journey to the
Prophet.
“When I met the Prophet, peace be on him, I told him all about
the arrangements that were made for the marriage and about my
relationship with Abrahah. I told him she had become a Muslim and
conveyed to him her greetings of peace. He was filled with joy at
the news and said: ‘Wa alayha as-salam wa rahmatullahi was
barakatuhu and on her be peace and the mercy and blessings of God.

Help Hidaya’s In-Kind Collection Center Stay Open
Alhamdulillah, for the past 20+ years, Hidaya Foundation has
been operating a warehouse in-kind collection center every weekend
for donors in the Bay Area, who are blessed with so much, to drop
their excess and outgrown items for benefit of the poor overseas,
who have next to nothing. To date we have shipped nearly 400 40ft.
containers, and in normal times, we average shipping more than a
container per month from our San Jose Warehouse.Since we do not
sell any of the in-kind donations, we depend on donors to make
additional monetary donations (tax-deductible) to chip in towards
the shipments and operation costs of this project, so it can
sustain itself. In a growing trend, we are seeing an increase in
the amount of in-kind donations (meaning more shipments and labor),
and decrease in the amount of monetary donations towards the
project. If this trend continues, we will have to think hard about
if we will be able to continue operating our warehouse year
round. If you like and appreciate this effort, please donate
monetarily towards it, so we can continue providing this service in
shaa Allah!
