英語留学準備(Ⅰ) 1 単位(春学期)English for Studying Abroad
ビーサム, ショーン
授業科目の内容:
Important: This is the first part of a two-part course (English for Studying Abroad I & II). Students can take one course or both courses, but they should keep in mind that though some of the general skills and themes are similar, the topics will be different. These are two distinct courses meant to develop a variety of academic skills that can only be improved through repeated practice and experience.
This course is intended to improve student confidence and ability in combining their reading, speaking, writing and listening skills for use in foreign - particularly U.S.- academic environments. (This is what the TOEFL test refers to as the "integrated task".)
Also, students will be required to engage and interact with the instructor and fellow classmates on a regular basis. They will need to question, comment, suggest, support and play an active role in the class activities. This is not a lecture course where students can be passive attendees. All students should expect to be active learners and participants.
Class topics will involve global issues, current events and a variety of academic topics.授業の計画:1 Class overview, guidelines, policies; introductory exercises..2 English phonology diagnostic. "Katakana vs. English". (Exercises of
this type will be repeated throughout the course as time allows.)3 Introduction to integrated tasks. Theory, structure and presentation.4 Integrated task: lecture/speaking.5 Integrated task:conversation/speaking.6 Integrated task:reading/listening/speaking.7 Integrated task:reading/writing.8 Integrated task:reading/listening/writing.9 Student selection of materials/topic: speaking.10 Student selection of materials/topic: writing.11 Group or pair work: organization and presentation of main points.12 English phonology review and diagnostic13 Integrated task: reading/listening/writing.14 Integrated task: reading/listening/speakingその他 Self-evaluation, review, assessment and progress check.成績評価方法:
Students will be evaluated based on regular attendance, class participation and their progress in skill development based on their own self-evaluation in consultation with the instructor. Since there may be a variety of skill levels in the class, assessment will be based on progress, not on a total or absolute score. テキスト(教科書):
There is no textbook for this course. All necessary handouts and other materials will be provided by the instructor or researched by the students on the Internet.参考書:
English-Japanese/Japanese English dictionary.担当教員から履修者へのコメント:
Students are expected to have an appropriate level of English in order to actively participate in university-level classes taught in English.
The class will make regular use of texts taken from English news media (newspapers and other web-based sources) so students should be able to read at this level with the occasional help of a dictionary.

英語アカデミック・ライティング(Ⅰ) 1 単位(春学期)Writing an Academic Paper in English
和田 朋子
授業科目の内容:
The targeted level of English: Advanced (competent in writing simple English paragraphs) The aim of this course is to help advanced learners of English to develop their skills to write academic papers in English. Language, as it is often said, is no more than a tool that conveys what one wishes to express. This course will focus both on the content and technique aspects of students' academic writing. By the end of this course, students will hopefully be able to write well-organized papers at the level that would be accepted at universities in English-speaking countries.授業の計画:1 Introduction to academic writing2 Looking at and understanding what an academic paper is3 Deciding on a topic / Thesis statement4 Organization of an academic paper / Writing an outline5 Organization of a paragraph in an academic paper6 Introduction7 Making references / Citations 18 Making references / Citations 29 Brushing-up your English 110 Brushing-up your English 211 Private consulting session 112 Private consulting session 213 Private consulting session 3 / Deadline date of the final draft14 Final feedbackその他 Consolidation成績評価方法:
Students will be assessed by the quality of work they do in class and by how much they have improved during the course. The quality of the paper handed in at the end of the term will be considered as the final assessment.テキスト(教科書):
Other handouts and files will be distributed by the instructor when necessary.担当教員から履修者へのコメント:
Only those students who are academically motivated are welcomed in this course. It is also advised that participants have some kind of academic field that they are interested in since they will be asked to write one well-developed, in-depth paper on a certain academic topic during the course. They are to attend every class with their homework done. Although this course can be a half-year course, it is strongly advised that the students take it for the whole year since what is done in one semester is supplemented by the other. Note: Please make sure to attend the course introduction session (the first day of class) in April.質問・相談:

ビーサム, ショーン
授業科目の内容:
Important: This is the first part of a two-part course. Some of the general themes (personal preferences, experiences, listening-reading integration, etc.) will be the same but the actual topics of the presentations will differ. Students can take one course or both, but they should keep in mind that Oral Presentation II is intended to build on what is started in Oral Presentation I.
Students will learn and practice specific methods and techniques for giving presentations on various topics in English. The focus in Oral Presentation (I) will be on mastering the basic components of a speech: writing outlines, introducing topics, developing and supporting topics, and concluding a speech. Students will also be given ample time to practice appropriate posture, eye-contact, and voice intonation and pace.
Students should keep in mind that most oral presentations are brief and that the speaker is given very little time to prepare. For this reason, this class will focus on short presentations with minimum preparation time. This will maximize the speaking time for each individual student and require students to become more efficient, skilled and effective in their preparation.授業の計画:1 Class overview, guidelines and policies. The appropriate level of English for this class aims for an approximate TOEIC level of 400-600. However, because of the individual nature of students’ speeches, content and level can vary without slowing down the pace of the class. It is the students’ responsibility, however, to comprehend the instruction and all handouts, which will be in English.
The class level can be considered high-intermediate to low-advanced.質問・相談:
Students can contact the teacher before or after the classes. The teacher is also available in the classroom during the lunch period.
