11.. Introduction

1.1.SITE PLAN

The under study building is the Building D of the Faculty of Engineering of Aristotle

University of Thessaloniki in Greece. It was built in 1984 and it’s located at the south

corner of the campus of AUTh near the junction of Egnatia St and Tritis Septemvriou

Blvd. The geographic coordinates (used for sun study simulation) along with google map

satelite photo are shown below

The building has 10 stories without including the ground floor and the basement. Every

floor is 3.15 m high except for the basement which is 6.15 m high. The basement has

two levels. The upper level consists of office spaces whereas the lower one has

laboratories, some office spaces and the boiler room. The ground floor consists of a

concierge, a conference room, a computer room and offices. The rest floors have mainly

office spaces and laboratories. Finally, there is a structure on the roof that protects the

staircase ending and also includes a small office and a lab. This space will be referred as

the tenth story.

The general dimension data of the building are shown below:

22.. Thermal zones

The under study building is separated to two different thermal zones.

The larger percentage of the building’s heated space is used as offices and

laboratories. Also, t he staircase space holds less than the 10% of this

area and it is suggested to be included in an adjacent thermal zone. So

the f irst thermal zone consists of the ground floor and stories 1-10, and

it wi l l be referred as ZO-1. The second one consists of the basement

space and it’ l l be referred as ZO -2. Final ly the boiler room is considered

as a non heated space. Below are shown at f loor plans the area of

Basement Floor is set at level of -6.5m to ground lvl and has total story

ceil ing height 5m(U2, UHA area) and 6.5m(U1 area). ZO -2 consist of U1

and U2 area. The main reasons we set basement as a different Zone are

the different heating system than other stories and also that is set

partially underground when basement walls have no insulation .
