Why Tablet PCs are Cool!!!

• Writing is better than typing when explaining ideas.

• Tablets are like “Smart Paper”

• Sketch your idea. See it come to life

• Tablets allow us to save our handwritten work for future access– for us– for students

Page 9: Educational Technologies from CMU Ananda Gunawardena School of Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University.

Tablet PC for instructor• Windows Journal

– Convert “any” document to a journal document

– Annotate – lot better than powerpoint and smart board

– Save annotated notes as a pdf

• Classroom Presenter– Conduct an interactive classroom– Receive students handwritten responses– Critique in real time

Page 10: Educational Technologies from CMU Ananda Gunawardena School of Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University.

Tablet PC for Students• Make learning fun

• Tablet Math Whiz System– A web application where teachers can

manage classroom• Set up exercises, goal, math facts• Automated grading of students handwritten work• Look the scratch work of the students to see what

they are not getting• Reduces/eliminates grading time. Focus on

teaching

Measuring Reading Comprehension

• A “smart” program developed at CMU

• Works with any platform (tablets not necessary)

• All we need is digital content ported into Adaptive Book

• See Brochure

Page 13: Educational Technologies from CMU Ananda Gunawardena School of Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University.

Process• Teacher creates a reading exercise• Teacher creates

– an “expert” markup– Load into the Markup analysis tool

• Student are assigned the reading exercise– Students creates a “markup” of the content– Markups are saved and submitted to the

online markup analysis tool – Students gets a “grade” and feedback– Interactively “improve” the markup

Page 14: Educational Technologies from CMU Ananda Gunawardena School of Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University.

Benefits• Finally there is a reading program to measure

what students read• System is engaging and interactive• It is like a game – how close can I get to my

teachers thinking• Marking up content is not random – students

really have to think about it• No grading for the teacher – students keep

reading until they can get a “satisfactory” score

Grants• HP Technology for Teaching Grant

• Basic Grants– Provide upto 5 Tablet PC’s and other

equipment

• Leadership Grants– More equipment for students

Conclusion• CMU is interested in doing pilot projects with

– School Districts– After School Programs– Cyber Schools– Administrators/Teachers

• Goal is to reduce the workload for the teacher (grading etc) and increase the technology effectiveness
