Key indicators in these five areas include: (1) prenatal care rates; (2) low birthweight; (3) child deaths; (4) sexually transmitted disease rateS; (5) psychiatric hospitalizations; (6) physical fitness; (7) child abuse and ncglact; (3) teen violent deaths; (9) delinquency; (10) substance abuse rates; (11) weapons possession; (12) violent crime arrests; (13) standardized test results; (14) literacy rates; (15) school dropout rates; (16) per-pupil expenditures; (17) special education enrollment; (18) school suspension rates; (19) day care capacity; (20) Head Start enrollments; (21) number of births to teens; (22) number of births to single mothers; (23) out-of-home placements; (24) reduced lunch enrollees; (25) unemployment rates; and (26) average income. Following a brief profile of the state, special issues for Virginia's youth are addressed including homelessness, inadequate health coverage, single-parent families, immunization, motor vehicle injuries, and child poverty. The remainder and bulk of the report provides data, by county, of the key indicators for the years 1993 through 1997.
